In this and the following articles, using these documents, we will try to give from another view a picture of the espionage that prevailed in the region during WWII.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Cairo was the Allied spy center under British command. But the spies\u2019 training started in Lebanon and continued in Cyprus. From Cyprus, with the tolerance of Turkey and with the cooperation of local officials, the spies traveled along the southern Turkish coasts until they reached the opposite side of the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, during the night, they would go to one of the deserted islets in the Karpathian Sea, such as Syrna and Astakida. All day they were hiding camouflaged, and at night went to their destination to carry out their mission. Porcupine, small British submarine used in espionage missions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bases<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the announcement of Italy\u2019s Treaty with the Allies on September 8<sup>th<\/sup>, 1943, the Allies occupied Kastelorizo which they used as an advanced base. Also, when the tide of war began to tilt towards the Allies, Turkey allowed the Allies to establish three bases within its territorial waters: 1) At Pentzik in the Dorian Gulf (Hisaronu Korfesi), 2) Dereme Base (from Greek pronunciation of the initials DRM) in the Kerameic Gulf (Gokova Korfesi), which today the Turks call in their language as the English port, 3) In Turk-Buku in Geronta\u2019s Gulf (Gulluk Korfesi).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These three bases were in narrow bays with steep pine-covered slopes whose mouths are closed by small islands. Near each base there was a spring with running water. A 100\u2013150-ton boat was moored inside each bay which served as command and communication center, feeding and resupplying the caiques with food, weapons and munitions before they set off on their mission. They bought fresh meat and vegetables from the Turks of the surrounding area and from Bodrum (Halicarnassus). According to the agreement they had with the Turks, they were forbidden to bring arms ashore. With many local Turks the spies developed friendly relations, especially with the Turkish-Cretans who spoke Greek. Except for the Turkish officers who in the First World War fought with the Germans and treated them with hostility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aplotheka<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to these bases, there was also a fourth one on the south side of Cape Alepo, opposite Rhodes, in Aplotheka (Bozukkale) which is identified with the ancient Lorima. Aplotheka has a spacious port from where several allied espionage missions were launched. Aplotheka was dominated by Panaos George Paralis from Symi married in Kasos. During the war, together with his brother Elias escaped to the Middle East and enlisted in the service of the Allies. In the Karpathian sea are Syrna, Astakida and other islets used by the spies as hideouts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Caiques<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The movement of the spies began with six 15-ton caiques, which later reached 43. As can be seen from their names: \u201cTaxiarchis\u201d, \u201cEugenia\u201d, \u201cTriumph\u201d, \u201cSaint John\u201d, \u201cKonstantine\u201d, \u201cSaint Stefanus\u201d, \u201cMaritsa\u201d and \u201cEvangelistra\u201d, this fleet consisted of Greek boats. With these, many Greek patriots and especially Dodecanese escaped to Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the caiques were originally equipped with 15-20 hp Diesel Bolinder engines and were slow and noisy, the Allies changed their engines to 90 hp gasoline engines. After this conversion, the caiques developed a speed of 6-7 miles per hour and were equipped with machine guns. The spy agency also had two Fairmiles which were about 20 meters long and went 9 miles per hour. They were equipped with one 40mm Bofor, one 20mm Oerlikon and two twin Vickers machine guns. They also used small submarines of the \u201cPorcupine\u201d type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Camouflage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The caiques were in danger of being identified and sunk by the German planes patrolling by day. The idea of using the camouflage method of boats was conceived by Maurice Green who studied visual arts and during the war was commander of the camouflage group of the British 8<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;Army. For two to three weeks, he tried nets of various shades and stakes ending in discs of various sizes and shapes. The stakes were placed in various parts of the boat and its mast was locked and laid down on top of the boat, which was covered with nets.
