They also worked six days a week and 12 hours a day, enduring unbearable heat from the red-hot irons. Nick Konstantinidis describes this experience, which can be loosely translated as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cOthers in the factories, with the high chimney,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>where their bodies are cooked, like cod.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Restaurants<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others subsequently secured jobs in restaurants as dishwashers, where there was more security but lower wages. However, they had the opportunity to become cooks and eventually own their own restaurants. Nikos Konstantinidis refers to the dishwashers in the following couplet, which can be freely translated as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn Karpathos I was having a good time and rejoicing in youth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and now in America, I am an engineer washing dishes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;The Pursuit of Education<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the difficulties and sufferings experienced by the first immigrants, some of them maintained their interest in education. Among them was John Kokkinidis, who studied engineering at Columbia University and later designed the Bronx Expressway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interest in and dreams of education also grew among the children and grandchildren of former miners. One such example is Nick Dalianis, who studied chemistry first at the University of Chicago and later at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, contributing to the conversion of Uranium into Plutonium and the construction of the atomic bomb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Changing Landscape<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The situation changed dramatically with the last great migration from Greece to America. In the decade between 1965 and 1975, the immigration law of 1965 provided the opportunity for 200,000 Greeks to immigrate to America. Now, immigrants came with their wives and children, who attended public schools and pursued higher education at universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1974, Manolis and Sofia Manoliou came to America with their children: 6-year-old Panagiotis, 5-year-old Vassilis, and 3-year-old Fotini. Initially, all three attended public schools and then went on to universities. Panagiotis specialized in Computer Science and is currently a professor at Northeastern University in Boston. He has led dozens of research government and industrial projects. Vassilis majored in education and became an educator and later an administrator within the New York City Department of Education. Fotini majored in administration and became Managing Vice President of Human&nbsp;Resources with Capital One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Emmanuel Panagiotis Manolios received his Bachelor of Science from Northeastern University, and this year, he earned his Master of Science from the same institution. Also, this year, Emanuel Vasili Manolios received his Bachelor of Arts from Tampa University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The example of the children and grandchildren of Manolios\u2019 family is characteristic of the immigrants who migrated between 1965 and 1975. While most may have worked in restaurants and other businesses, most of their children attended universities, and now their grandchildren continue this trend. Additionally, several expatriate associations and organizations, such as the Pan-Karpathian Foundation and the Karpathian Educational and Progressive Association, have established scholarship programs.
