the first spy mission from Karpathos, Commander Poole D.S.O. assigned to Captain P.L.P. The Saint Irene\u2019s bay where the second spying mission landed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At 11:30 on October 3, 1943, \u201cSaint Stefanos\u201d departed with operational personnel and supplies and arrived at Cape Lona (Cyprus) at 09:00 the following day. They remained anchored and at 16:00 they started directly for Karpathos with a course of 278\u00b0 maintained its course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 20:50, while in latitude 35\u00b0 and longitude 31\u00b0-47\u2032, two unidentified vessels were sighted to starboard. A few minutes later one left for the south and the other turned back firing several flares with no identification signal. \u201cSaint Stefanos\u201d maintained its course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 18:00 on October 5<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;Kali Limni mountain appeared on the starboard bow. At 9:30 p.m., while within five miles of the coast, a red light flashed on the shore. Thomas asked the Litos where to go and followed his instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I don\u2019t recognize<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After they reached latitude 35\u00b0-35\u2032 and longitude 27\u00b0-15\u2032, less than a mile from the beach, he asked Litos if he recognized the coast. The answer was: \u201cI do not recognize.\u201d They travelled for an hour and still he failed to recognize the shore. By this time the moon had set, and it was difficult to see the coastline clearly. It was 00:30 on October 6<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;and Thomas saw fit to attempt an approach if Litos recognized Ahata Cove. Lastos, the highest mountain of Karpathos with Kalilimni\u2019s peak.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas suggested that they go to Saria and return on the night of the 6<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;for a second attempt. The proposal was not favorably received by Litos who further said that if they went to Saria they would be caught. Thomas\u2019 view was that Litos was nervous and anxious and that his morale was affected by the red light on the coast and the bombardment of Rhodes which was clearly visible (the Battle of the Dodecanese was being fought between the Allies and the Germans).<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Failure and return<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since he was not ready to make a second attempt, Thomas decided to return to Cyprus as Stephen had informed him not to make more than two attempts. From latitude 35\u00b0-30\u2032 and longitude 28\u00b0-10\u2032, \u201cSaint Stefanos\u201d set course 112\u00b0 for Cyprus. The route of the second mission from Cyprus directly to Karpathos and back, without being executed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSaint Stefanos\u201d left Famagusta at 14:00 on October 5th and at 01:00 on the 18<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;a submarine was spotted off Kastellorizo which immediately dived when it saw the boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSaint Stefanos\u201d arrived in Aplotheka at 16:00 on the 18<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;from where it departed for Astakida at 19:00. Approaching Halki a red light appeared which stayed on for three minutes and then went out. This was repeated every fifteen minutes on their passage from Halki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They arrived at Astakida at 07:30 on the 19<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;and at 19:30 of the same day they left for Karpathos where they arrived at 23:00 and approached the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The weather had worsened with a strong swell from the west causing violent ripple, and Thomas decided against landing the agents and supplies by dinghy as there was no leeward shelter. The bay of Agata where the landing of the second spying mission was intended.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At 00:30 on October 20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;they reached St. Irene\u2019s Cove where they found shelter without waves and anchored. They lowered the dinghy and in 45 minutes landed the agents and supplies. Each agent was given 10 gold British pounds and 20,000 Italian lire for personal expenses and 100 gold British pounds and 100,000 Italian lire for the mission\u2019s expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 01:25 the boat left for Astakida where it arrived at 06:15 and from there, at 15:00 on the 20<sup>th<\/sup>, left for Cape Krio where it arrived at 06:00 on the 21<sup>st<\/sup>, the rough seas having calmed. Between 16:00 and 17:00 25 enemy aircraft were observed flying north in three groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next day Litos left for Mesochori to meet Em. Harokopos, Vasilis Perros and Nicholas Lykos recommended by the service. On the way Litos met a woman who upon seeing his pistol fainted and Litos had to identify himself to her to appease her. Outside Mesochori he met Andreadis\u2019 brothers (John, Andreas and Nicholas) and asked them to contact the aforementioned, with whom Litos spoke (including Doctor Frank Economides). Litos returned and they placed their supplies in a temporary shelter. But the shepherd Grinas and a fisherman saw them and from that day the mission was not secret anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the 23<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;the spies moved to Vroisi and from the new hiding place began their mission. They sent Harokopos to Giannagas (Doctor John Economides) to notify him of their arrival and to secure his cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/a213-Karpathos-Second4.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/a213-Karpathos-Second4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66072\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u039f \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2 \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2 \u039b\u03c5\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2. The spy Christoforos Litos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon his return Harokopos informed the spies about the information he received from Giannagas and the teacher Christoforos Sakellaridis and that they could approach Colonel Francesco Imbriani. After a few days they received from Imbriani maps and military information which they sent to Cairo with \u201cSaint John\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Vroisi the shepherd Dellis brought to their hideout the Italian police master at Mesochori (Brigadiere Michele) who was unofficially aware of their mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the night of November 1<sup>st<\/sup>, the expedition moved 7-8 kilometers southwest of Vroisis, where they were unknown and gained greater security. However, on November 4<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;Harokopos sent a note with Lykos and an Italian lieutenant (Alberto Patruno) who was being pursued by the Germans, asking to be held until they could find a way to send him to Cairo. They were forced to hold him, or they would have been obliged to leave at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On November 25<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;the Germans captured 40 hostages (were 10, Konstantine G. Pahos, Theoharis G. Dimarchos, Emanuel K. Talarandas, Konstantine V. Tsabounieris and George H. Vassilaras from Spoa, and Emanuel N. Protopsaltis, Doctor Minas Nik. Sakellis, Michael G. Nuarakis, Emanuel Polychroni Stamatiadis, from Mesochori), who were to be executed if they did not confess where the Italian officer was hiding. Consequently, the spies were forced to conspire with their associates, even with Imbriani, to execute the Italian lieutenant and place his body where the Germans would pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision was carried out, but to remain in the same place exposed them to many dangers, and the next day they moved to Apella from where they continued their mission in collaboration with Giannagas, Christoforos Sakellaridis and Ibriani, with John Litos as carrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In each village was a partner of the spies who watched the movements and notified them in the evening of the same day. In addition, a beautiful girl (the Italian teacher Maria Teresa) who had an affair with the German military Commander was getting the best information for the spies (Her relation was not with Captain Bethege, but with a lieutenant who served in Menetes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The organization was perfect with the following results:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>11\/29\/1943, two boats sank in Pigadia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>12\/11\/1943, a boat sank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1\/12\/1944, two boats sank in Kastello.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1\/19\/1944, two boats sank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On February 5, 1944, one 60-ton boat was sunk, and a second 200-ton boat was damaged. The Germans got a Greek engineer to repair it, but he dislodged a plank, and the boat sank. Another boat 100-ton boat sank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On February 8<sup>th<\/sup>, 1944, 3,000 anti-fascist Italians left Karpathos in four boats accompanied by a torpedo boat bound for Crete (by then almost all Italians had left Karpathos), all but one sank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On February 14, 1944, a group of Greek traitors (only one Karpathian and one Rhodian cooperated with the Germans) searched within 3 meters of the spies, but it was impossible to discover them, due to the excellent shelter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2\/21\/1944, a boat sank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2\/28\/1944, a 90-ton boat was sunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2\/29\/1944, the spies relocate again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 6, 1944, four seaplanes were destroyed (on the beach Ammos in Pigadia) and 5 boats were sunk in various parts of the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>German Gestapo landed by parachute with an RDF (radio tracking device). On March 20, 1944, the Germans launched a major search for the spies. They were surrounded by 48 Germans for a long time, and they lacked everything, even water. Once the Germans passed within 6-7 meters from the spies, but fortunately were not discovered. The spies sent a signal to Cairo and were ordered to go to Vanada to be detached. After much trouble and danger, they reached the appointed point, but the charging generator was destroyed, and the batteries were empty.
