year\u2019s Symposium of the Dodecanesian Institute of Letters and Arts<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1963, a group of elite intellectual people of the Dodecanese founded the \u201cDodecanesian Institute of Letters and Arts\u201d with the aim of studying and promoting the cultural (historical, archaeological, linguistic, folklore, artistic, etc.) subjects of the Dodecanese. Apart from the Dodecanese, several members of D.I.L.A. come from other regions of Greece, they are people of letters who deal with issues related to the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six decades later we find D.I.L.A. to have been established among the notable Greek intellectual organizations, having published 30 volumes of the periodical scientific publication \u201cDodecanese Chronicles\u201d, 42 independent scientific and literary publications as well as 6 issues of the magazine of Speech and Art \u201cRodiaka Grammata\u201d, a total of 78 books. The publication of so many books is made possible by the generous contribution of Manolis Makris, president of D.I.L.A., to the typesetting of the books as well as the donations of organizations and individuals, who pay the printing costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also in 1978, starting from Rhodes, D.I.L.A. established the biennial organization of Cultural Symposiums on one of the islands of the Dodecanese with the theme of the host island and of the Dodecanese in general. These Symposia, in addition to strengthening the local literature and bibliography, contribute to the spiritual and national stimulation of the inhabitants, especially of the small and isolated islands. After covering all the islands, the next Symposium in 2009 was held in Piraeus in honor of Dodecanese living outside the Dodecanese and abroad. Then the turn of each island started again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s Symposium takes place in Kasos between June 28-30 and coincides with the bicentenary of the Kasos Holocaust in June 1824. The scientific prestige of 90 selected researchers participating, as well as the interdisciplinary variety and originality of the 65 presentations embrace the entire Dodecanese, with special emphasis on the issues concerning the island hosting the Symposium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a special connection between the Dodecanese of America with D.I.L.A. The late Manolis Athanasiadis was one of its first members and associates. The ties continued and strengthened with the reorganization of the National Dodecanese Council of America and with its participation in the Symposia and the publication of books, which among others refer to the Dodecanese of America. In this year\u2019s Symposium, two Dodecanesians from America are participating, one study concerns the American community and the other Kasos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, the Dodecanese of America support and stand by with the decision of the D.I.L.A. in writing the History of each island of the Dodecanese in Greek and English, undertaking the translation and helping financially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The English edition is of particular importance for the Dodecanese in America because it will give the opportunity to the new generation, who do not know Greek, to get to know the history of all the islands of the Dodecanese. In addition, the sending of each book to the 50 largest libraries in America and to the Universities that have Greek programs will give the wider scientific public the opportunity to get to know the history of even the smallest islands of the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until now, the \u201cHistory of Rhodes\u201d and the \u201cHistory of Karpathos\u201d by Manolis Makris, who also did the typesetting, have been published, and the translation was done by Manolis Cassotis and Demosthenes Triantafillou. The cost of the \u201cHistory of Rhodes\u201d was paid by Demosthenes Triantafillou and Manolis Cassotis, and the \u201cHistory of Karpathos\u201d by the brothers Manolis and John Cassotis. The two books have been distributed in America and sent to more than 50 libraries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, Kostas Kontos, Demosthenes Triantafillou and Nick Konstantinidis have undertaken, respectively, the writing of the history of Symi, Nisyros and Kasos, while the Association of Symians of New York \u201cAegle\u201d has undertaken the financing of the History of Symi.
