Poole D.S.O., R.N.R. \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03bf \u03c4\u03b1\u03b3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c1\u03c7\u03b7\u03c2 Baker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>WWII \u2013 British spies in the Dodecanese \u2013 9o<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the WWII, several British officers and caique captains served with the Allied intelligence services in and around the Dodecanese rendering valuable service to the common cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leon Stephen<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among them Leon Stephen of Armenian origin whose parents, Stephen M. Iplicjian and Marie Arapian, were born in Smyrna, his father on December 5, 1882, and his mother on October 26, 1882. They had Armenian (Ottoman) citizenship and as refugees moved to England with passport \u201cwithout a country\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On September 25, 1907, in Manchester England, their son Leon was born. In the municipal records he was registered as Orthodox Christian of British Nationality with the name Leon Stephen, from his father\u2019s anglicized name Stefanos. Later his family returned to Turkey for eight years where Stephen spent his childhood and besides his mother language, Armenian, he learned Greek and Turkish. Later when he returned to England, he attended Wrekin College in Wellington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In France<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1925-1934 Stephen lives in France where he learned French and works as: Bank Clerk at Banque Francaise De L\u2019Afrique-Paris. Partner &amp; accountant in clothing manufacturer Jolyance, S.A.R.L.-Paris. Partner &amp; accountant in his father\u2019s Import &amp; Export company Stephen M. Iplicjian \u2013 Paris. Private company Imports &amp; Exports. He was knowledgeable of French Corporate and Commercial Law and was given the opportunity to travel to Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Albania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Returns to England and war ensues<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1934 he returned to England and utilized his qualifications. He was bilingual in English and French and worked as an Auditing Accountant for United States Lines-London and as a Dock Manager for the Joseph C. Mount Company-London. He was into sports: Horse Riding, Sailing, Rugger, Swimming, and History.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Military career<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He attended officer\u2019s school and in 1939, as soon as WWII began, he was drafted with the rank of second lieutenant. On February 24, 1941, he volunteered for overseas service and on March 16, 1941, he left Britain. On May 12, 1941, he arrived in Egypt and on June 27, 1941, in Cyprus, where he assumed staff duties and on December 29, 1941, he was promoted to lieutenant. On July 14, 1942, he was promoted to captain and on July 16, 1942, he volunteered for the S.O.E.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Service with S.O.E<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the beginning of 1941 until the end of the war he took part in many dangerous missions in enemy occupied territories as staff officer with very good results. His duties included infiltrating and assisting in the establishment of new missions and maintaining with supplies all missions that had already been established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His knowledge of the Greek language and of Greece and its islands helped him to understand the Greeks, their strengths and weaknesses, and thus to get the best out of the staff of the Aegean Mission which consisted mainly of Greeks who he handled in a pleasant way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the knowledge of the Turkish language was a great advantage in establishing friendly relations with the Turks which were of great value to him and the \u201cParanautical\u201d Fleet and in the creation of secret bases along the Turkish coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among other missions Stephen was the leader of the first spying mission to Karpathos and was involved in the supply and dispatch of the second spying mission from the same island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his expeditions to the Dodecanese and the Cyclades he traveled over 10,000 miles in small boats. Later he was assigned to Crete and on February 24, 1945, he was transferred to Athens. He returned to Britain on July 21, 1945, after long service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenneth John Mackenzie<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenneth John Mackenzie was born in Scotland on September 4, 1904, he was the son of William and Jean Mackenzie of Scottish ethnicity with Presbyterian religion. He studied at the University of Edinburgh and from 1924 to 1940 taught as a teacher. Besides English and French, he spoke, read and wrote Gaelic as his mother tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from Britain and the surrounding islands, Mackenzie had visited and got to know other countries: Norway, France, Egypt, Palestine and Syria. He was athletic and enjoyed Horseback Riding, swimming, shooting, sailing, mountain climbing, running, reading and Morse broadcasting. He also drove a bicycle, motorcycle, car and truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Military career<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He attended officer school and in 1939, as soon as WWII began, he was drafted with the rank of second lieutenant. On March 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 1941, he joined the S.O.E and served with Force 133 as Lieutenant R.N.V.R. On March 4, 1942 he joined M.O.4. and took part in five operations in Crete resulting in the withdrawal of 150 British soldiers and many Greeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During most of the war he served in the Middle East as a spy caique captain. He took part in many missions in the Dodecanese, mainly in Karpathos, the Cyclades and Crete. He had good relations with the Turks and with the Greeks who apart from those who cooperated with the spies made up the crews of the spy boats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On August 7, 1943, as captain of \u201cArmadillo\u201d he captured the Italian boat Montefalcone between Rhodes and Symi. He later carried out Operation \u2018Grotesque\u2019, landing a mission on Naxos and nearby islands making valuable contacts for further operations. During this trip he rescued two Air Force Officers who were hiding on the islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 27<sup>th<\/sup>, 1944, he arrived in London for consultation and on June 25 he left for Cairo. On February 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 1945, he was appointed master of H.M.S. \u201cMosquito\u201d and on March 23, 1945, assumed duties as Senior Officer in the \u201cLevant Fishing Patrol\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philip Lyn Price Thomas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philip Lyn Price Thomas was born on May 5, 1906, in the village of Llwynypia, England, and attended Kilburn Primary School, located northwest of London. When the war began, he was married with permanent residence in St Helens, Merseyside, England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Military career<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas was serving in the British Navy and on December 16<sup>th<\/sup>, 1942, he was transferred to the S.O.E. Force 133. In May 1943 he was transferred to the Para Naval Section as captain of a caique, mainly \u201cSaint Stefanos\u201d, and took part in many espionage operations. On April 12<sup>th<\/sup>, 1944, he was assigned to ME 67 and on February 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 1945, to \u201cLevant Fishing Patrol\u201d. He was awarded a special honor on January 4, 1945.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among dozens of operations and missions that Thomas undertook with the \u201cSaint Stefanos\u201d is the detachment of the first spying mission from Karpathos (August\/September 1943). Attempt to establish the second spying mission in Karpathos (October 3, 1943). Establishment of the second spying mission in Karpathos (October 15-20, 1943).
