Dodecanese societies in America \u2013 5th <\/sup>Astypalea<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before 1924 in Youngstown OH the first Astypalean society in America was founded under the name \u201cPortaitissa\u201d, in honor of the Virgin Mary of the Castle of Astypalea. That year the Association organized an event that yielded $182, the same year there was $2,340 in the Association\u2019s coffers (equivalent to 468 gold British pounds). The Association, through the Ecclesiastical Charity Fund, helped churches, schools and the health care of the residents of Astypalea. But a decade later, due to the ensuing economic crisis, the Association ceased its activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, after WWII and especially after the passage of the new immigration law in 1965, most Astypaleans gathered in New York. Thus, in 1965, in this city, the \u201cAssociation of Astypaleans of America\u201d \u200b\u200bwas founded on the initiative of: Roussos Kanaris, George Mariakis, Nicholas Kanaris, Nicholas Perdikis (a great benefactor of Astypalea), Stratos Skartadou and Maria Kanaris (the first Association\u2019s president) and with the aim of helping to improve living conditions on their island. For several years John Palatianos served as president and represented the Association in the Dodecanese Federation which he served in various positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By sending a respectable amount of money, the Association added two classrooms to the Primary school of Astypalea, installed an indoor heating system for the entire school building and helped to enrich the municipal library. With a respectable amount of money, helped to build a soccer field and financially supported the sports club \u201cKleomidis\u201d for the acquisition of sports equipment. The Association also showed care for the poor and the sick and those in need of help: Every year at Christmas, Easter and in exceptional cases, help came to its compatriots on the island who were facing financial problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many times, the Astypaleans responded to the Association\u2019s call to help churches and chapels. The Association helped financially to build a hostel for Panagia \u00abFlevariotissa\u00bb, whose feast day is on February 2nd<\/sup>, for the pilgrims to spend the night on the feast day. Also helped to open a road to the monastery of Saint Panteleimon for the pilgrims to go by car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In America the Association turned its attention to Youth, organizing a dance group and excursions for the entertainment of its members. The Association contributed to the reorganization of the Dodecanese Federation, participating in its events and in the national struggles of the Greek community in America.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
