Dodecanese societies in America \u2013 4th <\/sup>Rhodes<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In three previous articles we referred to the National Dodecanese Council and the Dodecanese Youth, who took up the struggle in America for the national restoration of the Dodecanese, and the Dodecanese Federation which for 75 years represents the Dodecanese community in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside the Pan-Dodecanese associations, societies were created for each island, even for villages. The purpose of these societies was to keep in touch with each other and to keep alive in their memory the island and their village with their traditions by organizing dances, holidays, excursions and other events. Also, through them they could help schools, churches and infrastructure projects on their island or village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the articles that will follow, reference will be made to the societies of each island, starting with Rhodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First attempts<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first attempt to create a Rhodian organization was made in 1912 when the Malonites of Pueblo CO, the Gennadians of Hartford and Marassians, Siderites, Prophylenes and other Rhodians of New York received a letter from the Gennadian teacher Stavros Milios of Lowell MA urging them to join the \u201cRhodian Phalanx\u201d, to take part in the Balkan War. Two other attempts were made by Rhodian miners at Aliquippa without success. Finally, the fourth attempt, made on the initiative of the teacher John Tsopanakis, resulted in the establishment of the \u201cRhodian Legion\u201d in 1918.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1919 Nicholas Chrysochos visited various Rhodian communities where he preached the gospel of incorporation of the Dodecanese to Greece. A large gathering was held in Pittsburgh where 1,200 dollars (equivalent to 240 gold British pounds) were collected, and 10 telegrams were sent to heads of state asking for the Union of the Dodecanese with Greece. In 1920, the Rhodians of Hartford founded a Rhodian society where the teachers Konstantine Boniatis and Athanasios A. Athanasiadis taught Greek, history and religion. In 1921 priest Papageorgiou founded in Weirton OH the society \u201cKleoboulos\u201d and in the same year the Gennadians founded \u201cOmonoia\u201d. Among other things, in 1924, \u201cOmonoia\u201d gave a theatrical performance, the proceeds of which were sent to Katavia for the care of the refugees of the Asia Minor disaster who took refuge there. Over time, however, all these efforts waned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seed sown by the \u201cRhodian Legion\u201d found quite fertile ground in Hartford CN, where a respectable number of Rhodians had, in the meantime, moved and serious efforts were begun for a general mobilization of the Rhodians. In 1916, the Rhodian Association \u201cOmonoia\u201d was founded, which was recognized by the state of Connecticut. The fame of \u201cOmonoia\u201d began to \u201cspread\u201d and in 1925 three chapters were established in Norwich, New York and Baltimore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, another Rhodesian organization, \u201cProgress\u201d, was founded in New York, with executives and members mostly from Malona. After negotiations, the union of \u201cOmonoia\u201d and \u201cProgress\u201d is achieved in a new organization, the Pan-Rodian Association of America \u201cApollon\u201d. Little by little, \u201cApollon\u201d increased its membership and spread across America with 20 chapters it created in Hartford, Norwich, New York, Baltimore, Aliquippa, Weirton, Farrell, Canonsburg, Warren, Gary, Detroit, McKeesport, St. Louis, Tacoma, Peoria, Chicago, Washington, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Union. \u201cApollon\u201d also established nine ladies\u2019 lodges in Hartford, New York, Baltimore, Aliquippa, Weirton, Canonsburg, Warren, McKeesport, Farrell and Gary, and youth chapters in Hartford, Union and Warren. Apart from the chapters and lodges, the independent Rhodian societies became members of \u201cApollon\u201d, as well as the associations of Rhodian students and scientists and a chapter established in Rhodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the slogan \u201cNation \u2013 Fatherland \u2013 Religion \u2013 Language\u201d, \u201cApollon\u201d offered valuable services to Rhodes and the Rhodian community of America. \u201cApollon\u201d organized fundraisers for the earthquake victims of Rhodes, granted scholarships to Rodian students in Rhodes and America and contributed to the enrichment of four libraries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Italian occupation, \u201cApollon\u201d helped schools and villages, contributed to the organization of catechetical schools when Mussolini closed the Greek schools, organized student feeding programs, paid preachers and financially supported exiled patriots and scientists. In this area, \u201cApollon\u2019s\u201d action in Rhodes was carried out in a very secret way, through Athens, Cairo, Alexandria and trusted individuals. In 1930, \u201cApollon\u201d took part in the centenary of the Greek Independence in Athens, represented by George Th. Georgiadis, Michael Georgandas and Panagiotis Kyriakidis.       <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, \u201cApollon\u201d founded an Agricultural School in Rhodos, helped the villages financially, sent stationery to the students of Rhodes, x-ray machines for the hospital and medicines of great value. In addition, \u201cApollon\u201d helped the Greek Red Cross, the Greek War Relief, the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the institutions of the Archdiocese of America, endowed girls in Rhodes and contributed to the cause of Cyprus, after the Turkish invasion, by sending a large sum of money and adopting refugee children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, especially during the economic crisis in the 1930s, \u201cApollon\u201d took care of its members. When a member died, the Association offered his family $100, enough to cover his funeral expenses. When, again, someone got sick the Association gave him 5 dollars a week and if he went to hospital the amount increased to 10 dollars. When a needy person wanted to return to Rhodes and could not pay his fares, the Association would give him $100 to cover the return expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The multifaceted national action of \u201cApollon\u201d was pioneering. For 44 consecutive years (1934-77) published the monthly bulletin \u201cApollon\u201d and for 16 years (1978-1993) the magazine \u201cRhodes\u201d, under the care of Manolis Athanasiadis. It was the first organization that suggested and contributed to the founding of the Dodecanese Youth of America. It was one of the first to suggest and contribute to the establishment of Greek War Relief in America. It was the first organization that contributed to the establishment of the National Dodecanese Council of America and took the lead in its reorganization in 1975. Of all the Greek American organizations, \u201cApollon\u201d was the first to organize its conference in Greece (1960).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All these years \u201cApollon\u201d continued its activities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the last ten years \u201cApollon\u201d has been managing the Historical Archives located at the Paideia Center library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At present \u201cApollon\u201d is working on the creation of an Educational center in Rhodes and the construction and installation of a bronze statue of Dorieas who in 408 founded the city of Rhodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the last five years \u201cApollon\u201d has helped to reforest forests destroyed by fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every summer for the last four years provides medical assistance to the City of Rhodes Animal Shelter with the help of American Vet students and faculty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the last 40 years, \u201cApollon\u201d in cooperation with the other Rhodian associations has been helping to build and operate a Greek Studies Center on the Connecticut University Campus with the Greek Orthodox Chapel, Educational Building, outdoor Marble Theater and Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In general, \u201cApollon\u201d played and continues to play a decisive role for the educational and cultural achievement of the Homogeny for Hellenism and Orthodoxy in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the period of the Italian occupation, \u201cApollon\u201d together with all the Rhodian associations sent to Rhodes, for projects of public benefit and purposes, more than 63,000 Italian gold pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Municipality of Rhodes, honoring the work and contribution of \u201cApollon\u201d, gave its name to one of the main streets of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local societies<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to \u201cApollo\u201d, other Rhodian associations from the villages of Rhodes, operated in America to help their villages and fellow villagers in America. In 1921, the Soronians of Hartford founded their first society and later, in 1972, \u201cHermes\u201d. In 1923, the Koskinians of Canonsburg founded \u201cKleoboulos\u201d who built the bell tower of their village church, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1926, and collected 8000 dollars, i.e. 1600 gold Brittish pounds or 100,000 Italian lire, for the construction of a new olive press in Koskinou. Also, the Association financially helped Koskinian honor students to continue their studies in Greece and America. In 1926 the people of Trianta founded \u201cIalyssos\u201d which started the construction of a new school building in Trianta. Later, in 1931, the Association reorganized and continued to raise money to complete the project. In 1938 the Kremastian Association completed the library in Kremasti, which cost 16,000 dollars (equivalent to 1600 gold pounds) and supplied 5,000 books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1972, the Rhodian Association \u201cDiagoras\u201d was founded in Baltimore, which offers valuable services to the Rhodian community there and to their birthplace. Every year \u201cDiagoras\u201d celebrates the holiday of Santa Claus, organizes a prom and trips to American attractions and awards scholarships. Also, together with the associations of the Karpathians and Halkians, \u201cDiagoras\u201d participates in the National parade and celebrates the Incorporation of the Dodecanese with Greece. \u201cDiagoras\u201d donated $20,000 to Saint Nicholas church in Baltimore and a \u201cbaptistery\u201d to Saint Markela church. In 2004 \u201cDiagoras\u201d brought the icon of the Virgin of Skiadeni from Rhodes and from the fundraising held by the Association, $40,000 were collected for the opening of a road to the monastery.
