Dodecanese societies in America \u2013 6th <\/sup><\/strong>Kalymnos<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 20, 1924 in Youngtown OH, \u201cProdromos\u201d, the first Kalymnian Association in America, was founded with Michael Zervos as president and George Aleurofas as secretary. The following year, the Association sent to Municipality of Kalymnos 1,000 dollars (equivalent to 200 gold British pounds) for the medical care of the island\u2019s inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, in 1933, the headquarters of \u201cProdromos\u201d was transferred to Campbell OH, which gathered the populous Kalymnian community of Ohio and Pennsylvania. At that time the Board of Directors consisted of president doctor Michael Zervos, vice-president Nicholas Kalavros, gen. secretary George Aleurofas, special secretary John Lampadarios, treasurer Nicholas Vallas, collector John Michas and members Skevos Mouhourtis, Drosos Kambouris, Anthony Biliris, John Galanos, Emmanuel Kouros and Jacob Vallas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cProdromos\u201d dealt with the mutual assistance of its members, the preservation of their cultural heritage and its assistance to public institutions in Kalymnos, such as the orphanage and the old age home. On March 25, 1939, the Association appointed a committee which purchased a plot and in a short time the Hellenic Hall was built for meetings and other Association\u2019s events. In addition to the men\u2019s division, the association established a ladies\u2019 lodges and a chapter in Indiana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few years before 1935, the Kalymnians of New York founded the Kalymnian Brotherhood \u201cKalymnos\u201d as reported by the \u201cDodecanese Dawn\u201d on 3\/15\/1936: \u201cOn February 16th<\/sup>, the first annual ball of the recently reorganized Kalymnian Brotherhood \u201cKalymnos\u201d also took place, with very good success\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The purpose of the Brotherhood was the mutual assistance between its members, the preservation of the cultural heritage of the island and its assistance to Kalymnos for the creation of public utility projects. Most of the money that the Association collected from the various events was allocated to the orphanage and the old age home of Kalymnos and to help the Kalymnians in America who found themselves in a difficult position. Since then, the Association continues its activities and is among the Greek American communities that acquired their own home in Astoria, New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mobilization of the Dodecanese of America for the liberation and integration of the Dodecanese with Mother Greece found the association on the ramparts of the struggle, participating in the efforts and actions of the Dodecanese Youth and the National Dodecanese Council. After the war, the association contributed to the establishment of the Dodecanese Federation, participating in its events and in the national struggles of the Greek American community. Among other things, the association offered Greece the sum of 5,000 dollars for the purchase of a torpedo boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New York Kalymnian Society\u2019s dancing group is ready to dance \u201cMechanico\u201d and other traditional dances.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In 1937, the Kalymnian association \u201cSaint Panteleimon\u201d was founded in Tarpon Springs, on the initiative of the brothers Samarkos and Pikramenos. However, it seems that the \u201cKalymnian Union\u201d was founded in the same city before. \u201cSaint Panteleimon\u201d consists of two separate chapters, men\u2019s and women\u2019s, and deals with helping the native island and preserving the island\u2019s cultural heritage in America. Important was the help of \u201cSaint Panteleimon\u201d to the Kalymnians, who during the war fled as refugees to Palestine and other countries of the Middle East, to whom it sent 8,000 dollars, a respectable amount for the time, equivalent to 800 gold British pounds. It also sent 1,300 dollars (130 gold British pounds) to the suffering Kalymnians of Attica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1949, the Kalymnian Association of Gary was founded by the Kalymnians of Northwest Indiana, with Theophilos Tsagaris as the leader. The purposes of the Association, like the other Kalymnian associations, were mainly cultural and philanthropic. It helped its compatriots from Kalymnos with heart disease to come to America for surgery and others who needed specialized medical treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also in 2011, two new Kalymnian associations were founded, based in Washington DC and in Boston. During the same year, the Kalymnian Association \u201cSaint Savvas\u201d was founded in New York, which deals with cultural and sports issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the years that have passed the Kalymnian societies of America have strengthened their relations with each other. Starting from 1996, the \u201cPan-Kalymnian Conference\u201d was established in which participate the Kalymnian societies, Kalymnians from all the Kalymnian communities in America and dignitaries invited from Kalymnos. The first conference, held on January 7, 1996 in Tarpon Springs, was attended by the mayor of Kalymnos, Dimitris Diakomichalis, and the last, held in 2010, was attended by the mayor, George Roussos. The culmination of these efforts and contacts was the establishment of the Kalymmian Federation of America, on January 6, 2009, in Tarpon Springs. Besides New York, the Kalymnian societies in Tarpon Springs FL and Campbell OH also have their own buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
