Many times, it happened that even eight people stayed in the same room. Half worked during the day and the other half at night and slept in the same beds. When, in 1930 during the great financial crisis, a Kasian fell ill, his compatriots organized fundraising to send him to Kasos because if he stayed in America, without treatment, he would die. Zulis (president of the Kassian Youth).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When a Kasian was unemployed, the Brotherhood covered him financially until he found a job, and when a needy member died, it covered the costs of his burial. The Brotherhood also showed its philanthropic face in its birthplace, helping its suffering compatriots who lived in Kasos and other parts of Greece. Every year during the Christmas and Easter holidays and in exceptional cases, the Brotherhood sends money to help its compatriots needing help, even gave pension to a Kasian who had no other means to live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the Brotherhood turned its attention to Kasos with public utility projects: renovation and equipment of the Health Station in Fry, creation of a playground in Arvanitochori, construction of new cemeteries in Agia Marina and Fry, creation of a gymnasium in Agia Marina, creation of a hostel in Fry, equipment and heating of the kindergarten of Agia Marina and construction of the bust of General George Mavrikakis in Fry. From left: Elias Diakolios (president Karpathian Federation), Manolis Kouloukountis, Metropolitan Nektarios, George Vretos, Nikos Papageorgiou (Kasian\u2019s Brotherhood president).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The participation of the Brotherhood in the struggles for the liberation of the Dodecanese and its integration with Greece was important and in the creation of the Dodecanese Youth and the National Council of America led by Nicholas Mavris and the generous offers of the Kasian shipowners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, after WWII, the Brotherhood contributed to the establishment and realization of the goals of the Dodecanese Federation and takes part in all Dodecanese events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kasian Brotherhood is included among the Dodecanese organizations that acquired a privately owned building in the Bronx, New York where, on Heath Avenue, the Kasian community is concentrated. Inside the club, the cultural tradition of Kasos is cultivated and promoted, especially among young people, and Brotherhood events take place. In addition, the building generates significant income that is used to carry out the purposes of the Brotherhood in America and Kasos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the Brotherhood promotes the history and cultural heritage of Kasos to the wider Greek American community. At first, presented Kasos\u2019 Holocaust at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Manhattan and later at the Archdiocese Cultural Center in Astoria and then at the \u201cKasian House\u201d in the Bronx.
