Dodecanese societies in America \u2013 9th  <\/sup><\/em><\/strong>Kos<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1908, just two years after the first group\u2019s arrival of Koans in America, Koan societies began to be formed. In the beginning they had a local character and were pro-educational with the primary purpose of building schools in the villages of the island. Later the Koans of America dealt with the problems affecting the whole island and their community in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hippocrates<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December 1, 1908, Anthony Theofilidis, Konstantine N. Konstantinidis, Evangelos Hartofilis, K. Ieromninon, F. Theofilidis and G. Avgoulas from Antimachia founded \u201cHippocrates\u201d in New York. Within a short period of time, \u201cHippocrates\u201d collected 8,000 dollars which was equivalent to 1600 British golden pounds, with which the Primary School of Antimachia was built and donated to the Community. In 1926, immediately after the earthquake that hit Kos, the Association sent 1474 dollars (295 gold British pounds) to relieve the residents of Antimachia. In 1933 the Association was reorganized and continued to help the village school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Birthday of the Virgin Mary<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the same year, 1908, that \u201cHippocrates\u201d was founded, K. A. Papakonstantinou, G. M. Karathanasis, Spyros Boyatzis, N. P. Hieromnimon and other Koans from Kardamena founded in New York the society \u201cBirthday of the Virgin\u201d with the aim of building a Secondary School in Kardamena. According to the society\u2019s financial report of January 15, 1918, there were 3,602 dollars (720 gold British pounds) in the Association\u2019s treasury for the construction of the School. But by the time the work was finished, 1923, the Association had appropriated more than $6,000 (gold British pounds). In 1916, the composition of the Board of Directors was as follows: President John S. Kourzis, vice-president Nicholas I. Ieromnimon, secretary George M. Karanastasis, treasurers John Minas and Konstantine A. Mavros, assistant treasurer Elias P. Skoufezis, members Nicholas P. Ieromnimon, Konstantine J. Balis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abHope<\/em><\/strong>\u00bb<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1910 the Koans of New York who came from the island\u2019s capital founded the Association \u201cHope\u201d with the aim of supporting education on the island. \u201cHope\u201d contributed to the promotion of education in Kos by adding two classes to the Municipal School, which became the forerunner of the Hippocratic High School of Kos. Outside New York the Association organized chapters in Reading PA and Clarksburg WV where several Koans resided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHope\u201d was reorganized in 1932 with the aim of mutual assistance between its members and the support of charitable projects concerning Kos and the people of Kos everywhere. As soon as the Koans of America learned about the earthquake that destroyed Kos in 1933, \u201cHope\u201d conducted a Pan-American fundraiser. The fundraising committee was chaired by Archbishop Athenagoras with Nicholas Manousis as secretary. Despite the economic hardship prevailing in America, due to the economic crisis, the Committee collected and sent thousands of dollars to Kos for the relief of the victims and for the other needs of the island\u2019s inhabitants. In 1934, Nicholas Manousis published a monumental album dedicated to the victims of the earthquake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1933, through \u201cHope\u201d the Women\u2019s Association \u201cMeropis\u201d sprang up with the aim of bringing into wider communication the Koan families who lived in New York, to cultivate the feeling of solidarity and to help in every project undertaken by the Association. \u201cMeropis\u2019\u201d first Board of Directors was as follows: president Toula Stroumbou, vice-president Maria Kalandraki, secretary Euf. Pambri, treasurer Vasiliki Tulanta, members A. Kefalianou, Catherine Tulantas, Tsoukala and Maria Mylona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saint Paraskevi (Friday)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time as \u201cHope\u201d, the \u201cSaint Paraskevi\u201d association was founded in New York with the aim of rebuilding the old church of Saint Paraskevi. On March 4, 1916, the Association was reorganized by Ev. Tsapouniaris, Em. Zaraftis, Ev. Souridis, Em. Luke, Nick. Mylonas and Ath. Tsampuniaris and within six years managed to collect from subscriptions, dinners and donations more than 8,000 dollars (1600 gold British pounds), with which the rebuilding of the church took place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Entrance of the Virgin\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1914, Ch. Ioannidis, Spyros Boyatzis, J. Sevastopoulos and other Koans from Kefalos founded the \u201cEntrance of the Virgin\u201d association. In 1917 the Association was reorganized in Pittsburgh for the purpose of erecting a new school building in Kefalos and after collecting the sum of 7,000 dollars (1400 gold British pounds) it accomplished its purpose. Later, the Koans of New York from Kefalos, after the realization of the purpose and the dissolution of the Association, founded another association with the name \u201cThe Birth of the Virgin\u201d, which continues its activity to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOmonoia\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the above-mentioned Koan Societies, the Koan philanthropic association \u201cOmonoia\u201d was founded and operated in Reading PA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pan-Koan \u2013 \u201cHippocrates\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning of 1945, some Koans took the initiative and convened a meeting to establish a Pan-Koan Association that would represent the entire island. At the meeting of March 25, representatives from the city of Kos and the villages of Antimachia, Kefalos and Kardamena were present, and it was decided to establish the \u201cHippocrates\u201d Association. Later, other Koans from other villages of the island joined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the efforts of the respective Boards of Directors and the support of the members, the Association managed to demonstrate remarkable social, patriotic and philanthropic action. \u201cHippocrates\u201d sent tens of thousands of dollars to the villages and the capital of Kos for charitable and philanthropic purposes: churches, schools, nursing homes, medical treatments for needy patients and other public works. In addition, the Association donated thousands of dollars for the Cypriot brothers and for national defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presence of \u201cHippocrates\u201d is felt in the Dodecanese and the whole Greece community in general. The Association\u2019s contribution to the re-establishment of the Dodecanese Federation in 1970, led by Dimitris Papakonstantinou, was decisive, in whose events and activities it continuously participates. \u201cHippocrates\u201d is one of the Greek societies that has a clubhouse in a privately owned building in Astoria, New York. The Dodecanese Federation and the Dodecanese Youth are housed in the same building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
