On April 30, 1902, the siblings Dimitris and Ekaterini Maravelia passed through Ellis Island, New York, bound for Seattle WA, where their brother lived. In addition to Seattle, several of the newly arrived Lerians settled in New York and Baltimore MD, and almost all who came in the decade 1965-75 with the immigration act of 1965 stayed in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first the Lerians of America organized fundraising committees to help their island with community projects. Later, in 1920, the first Lerian association was founded in Baltimore, which, in the 1930s, was recognized under the name \u201cAmerican Lerian Association of Baltimore Maryland\u201d. On March 24, 1946, the Lerians of New York founded the \u201cAmerican Lerians Association \u2018Leros\u2019\u201d and the first Board of Directors was elected. Among its pioneers are: Petros Proios, Pavlos Proios, Alekos and Eudoxia Konstandara, Nikitas Angelou and Konstantine Tomazos. From 1946-1987 the Association allocated 53,000 dollars for works done in Leros. Every year, apart from the prom and the excursion, the Association organizes and takes part in various cultural events. The Association maintains close ties with the local leaders of the island and continues to help the nursing home for the elders in Leros. Twice, the then mayors of Leros George Zorzou (1981) and John Mavroudis (1985) attended the Association\u2019s prom. Also in 2004, the Prefect of Kalymnos, Leros, Patmos, Astypalea, Lipsi and Agathonisi, Chrysoula Sifouniou, who comes from Leros, came to America for the prom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1979 the Association founded the Youth Longe, which has a dance group and takes part in many Dodecanese and Greek American community events. In 1950 the Association took the lead in establishing the Dodecanese Federation and in 1970 in its re-establishment, it participates in its and many other Greek American events. From September 1979 to January 1982 the New York Association published a newsletter with the news of the Lerian communities and societies. Every summer the Association organizes excursion for its members and friends to Long Island NY.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Not long after the founding of the New York Association, the Lerians of Seattle founded the Lerian brotherhood \u201cAmerican Lerian Association of Seattle Washington\u201d. Also, around the 1970s, the Texas Lerian Association was founded in Huston, with rich cultural and philanthropic activity. Between the societies was noble competition, but also close cooperation, with always the same goal: helping the native island.
