The association \u201cSaint John the Theologian\u201d contributed to the construction of the school of Lipsi.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Dodecanese societies in America \u2013 11<sup>th&nbsp;<\/sup>Lipsi<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first known Lipsian to come to America was Konstantine Giakoumi Makris, who arrived around 1900 and settled in Martins Ferry OH. Around the same time, Manolis Koumoundouros arrived in America and settled in the same city, and a little later Anastasios Koumoundouros. About 1915 the John\u2019 Papadelia brothers arrived in America, of whom George went to Gary IN, Markos to Wheeling WV and Manolis to East Cleveland OH. And Sokratis Glavaris went to Baltimore MD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pioneers were followed by other Lipsians, who arrived in America immediately after World War I and settled in Martins Ferry and took jobs in the aluminum and iron factories. Around 1950, many Lipsians for work reasons began to move to Cleveland and other cities in Ohio and America. In the same cities settled the Lipsians who immigrated to America in the decade 1965-1975.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 1920, when several Lipsians gathered in Martins Ferry, they founded the Lipsian brotherhood \u201cSaint John the Theologian\u201d. The Association had a mutual aid character and aimed to become a means of communication between the Lipsians of America, aspiring to cultivate and stimulate their interest in their native island. In fact, within a short period of time the Association collected 35,000 dollars (7,000 gold British pounds), which was allocated for the construction of the central church of Lipsi, \u201cSaint John the Theologian\u201d. The soul of this effort was the treasurer of the Association, Konstantine Panidis. Also, the Association contributed significantly to the construction of the primary school, which still serves the school needs of the island today. Later, the headquarters of the Association moved to Cleveland, where, in the meantime, several Lipsians had moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the decade 1955-1965, the Association, in collaboration with the then mayor of Lipsi, Dimitris Koumoundouros, undertook the medical care of the island\u2019s residents. Anyone who needed treatment, the Mayor sent him to Kos to doctor Theofilos Peros for treatment. For surgical operations, there was a special contract for each surgical operation. Every three months the doctor submitted a list of medical expenses, which the Mayor forwarded to the Association, which paid the full amount for the drugs and the doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, in 1991, when several Lipsians gathered in New Jersey, a second society was founded in Fairview under the name \u201cOur Lady of Grace\u201d. Vassilis Eleftheriou, who served the Association for many years, took the lead in founding the Association.
