Dodecanese societies in America \u2013 12th<\/sup><\/strong> Nisyros<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of all the Dodecanese, the Nisyrians settled in New York en masse, and this is one of the reasons why the Nisyrians were the first to establish Dodecanese societies in Ameeica, influenced by the Greek American press circulating in New York and the activities of other Greek Americans societies. This is also due to the presence of several Nisyrians who came from Asia Minor and had experiences from the Nisyrian societies in Constantinople and Smyrna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHomer\u201d \u2013 \u201cPorphyris\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1903 the Nisyrian Association \u201cHomer\u201d was founded in New York with the aim of creating a community school in Nisyros and in 1907 it was activated and managed to collect a significant amount of money with which the \u201cHomeric Community School\u201d was built in Mandraki. At the same time, in 1906, \u201cPorphyris\u201d was founded in New York by Nisyrians from the same village, which collected a respectable amount of money with which the Municipal Baths of Nisyros were built. During the Balkan wars both societies organized fundraisers for national causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGnomagoras\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 5, 1915, \u201cGnomagoras\u201d came from the merger of the two societies. The new association continued the assistance to Nisyros with the completion of the port in Mandraki and later, in 1956, with the renovation of the Baths. During the Italian occupation, the Association helped the Greek schools of Nisyros by paying teachers\u2019 salaries and providing free books and stationery. It also helped the monastery of Panagia Speliani and other churches and chapels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the economic crisis, \u201cGnomagoras\u201d took social care of its members. When a member of the Association fell ill, it was given 40 dollars, and if he needed to go to the hospital, the amount increased to 90 dollars. And if the patient was indigent and needed to go to countryside to recover, the society offer him up to $250. When someone died and was destitute, the Association covered his funeral expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1931 \u201cGnomagoras\u201d started the publication of its monthly bulletin which lasted until 1940, and restarted from 1951-56, and individually in 1957, 1959 and 1966. In 1995 the Association reissued the \u201cBulletin\u201d in seven volumes and given an award by the Academy of Athens. In 1997, the Association published \u201cNisyros Historical\u201d by Elias Kontoveros, the \u201cNisyros Folklore\u201d by George Kazavis, the historical novel \u201cCalletes\u201d by Jacob Kazavis and several albums with rich historical and folkloric content about Nisyros and the Nisyrian community in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSaint John the Theologian\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1909, the Nisyrians of New York from Nikia, founded the Association \u201cSaint John the Theologian\u201d, honoring the homonymous Monastery of their village with the purpose of its maintenance and then took care of the medical treatment of the residents of Nikia and the hiring of teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1922 the Association decided to establish a girls\u2019 school in Nikia and took care of the of the refugees of the Asia Minor catastrophe who came to Nisyros. Also, during the Italian occupation, the Association financially helped the Greek schools of Nikia. In 1930, with the cooperation of the Nisyrian \u201cGnomagoras\u201d and \u201cThermiani\u201d, they created the Nisyrian society to serve the social needs of their members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After WWII, the Association continued to provide medical care for the residents of Nikia and to send food and clothing. One of the important projects of the Association was the construction of the \u201cTheological Primary School\u201d. Also, on the initiative of the Association and with a significant financial contribution, a road was opened to the Monastery. In 1971 the Association established a scholarship fund and together with the other Nisyrian societies founded a Greek school. Also, \u201cSaint John the Theologian\u201d published several albums with rich historical and folkloric content and acquired its own privately owned building in Astoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPanagia Thermiani\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1906, the \u201cTerpandros\u201d Association was founded in New York, but the collective activity of Nisyrians from Emporio began in 1909 with the founding of the association \u201cPanagia Thermiani\u201d in honor of the patron saint of the village. The purpose of the Association was the maintenance of schools on the island and the preservation of religion and the Greek language in America. During the Italian occupation, the Association paid the salaries of the teachers at the elementary schools of Emporio and Palos and the priests\u2019 salaries and paid gratuities to preachers. At the same time, \u201cPanagia Thermiani\u201d saw for the presence of a doctor and the existence of a pharmacy in Emporio, and participated in fundraisers for earthquake victims and refugees who came from Asia Minor to Nisyros, helped poor families and gave dowries to needy young women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From time to time \u201cPanagia Thermiani\u201d sent many thousands of dollars for public benefit projects carried out in Palos. It contributed to the rebuilding of the Holy Apostles Church and to purchase a plot on which the Primary school was built. It helped in the beautification of the Holy Monastery \u201cKyra\u201d, in the acquisition of an auxiliary plot, in the electric lighting and in the paving of the road going to the Holy Monastery and proceeded to utilize the plot purchased by the Association to build a hotel. In 1994, the Association established a scholarship fund for the children of its members attending colleges and universities, and at the same time financially helps churches and Greek schools in America. \u201cPanagia Thermiani\u201d published several albums with rich content and acquired its privately owned building in Astoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the three men\u2019s societies, in 1934 the women\u2019s society \u201cHaravgi\u201d was founded in New York with the aim of mutual assistance among the Nisyrians and the preservation of their cultural heritage. Also, in 1941, the \u201cNisyrian Youth\u201d was founded to assist the Dodecanese Youth in its work. Later, in addition to national issues, the \u201cNisyrian Youth\u201d turned its interest to cultural events. In 1974, the Nisyrians from Mandraki founded \u201cPanagia Spiliani\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Florida<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 2, 1998, at the house of Manos and Athanasias Koulianidis, following their invitation, the Nisyrians Fr. Tasos Diakovasilis, Manolis and Maria Papaemmanouel, Takis and Loretta Frantzis, Heraklis and Voula Frantzis, Nikolaos Kostidis, Anna Frantzis, Nikolaos and Zoe Indze, Dimitrios and Popi Dimitriou and the couple Peter Koroneos were present. At this meeting it was decided to establish a Nisyrian society in the Clearwater-Tampa area of \u200b\u200bFlorida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, on April 25, at the restaurant of Nikos Inzes in Clearwater, the Nisyrians of the area met and founded the association \u201cNisyros Society of Florida\u201d, and the election of the Board of Directors followed: president Nikos Inzes, vice president Em. Koulianidis, secretary Anna Frantzis, treasurer Em. Papaemmanuel, assistant treasurer Yiannis Koulianos, members Nikos Kostidis, Dim. Dimitriou, Takis Frantzis. Since then, the Association continues its cultural activity with a dance party, Christmas party and excursions. Also, every year the Association celebrates Panagia Spiliani, Panagia Kyra and Saint Nikitas the Nisyrian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1990, another attempt began to unify the Nisyrian of New York, which ten years later brought the desired results: In February 2003, the Nisyrian associations \u201cGnomagoras\u201d, \u201cPanagia Thermiani\u201d and \u201cSaint John the Theologian\u201d, after a century of fruitful activity, united their forces under the name \u201cNisyrian Association of New York\u201d. With the new society the \u201cNisyrian Youth\u201d, \u201cHaravgi\u201d and \u201cPanagia Spiliani\u201d are also cooperating.
