The monastery of \u201cOur Lady of \u2018Death\u2019\u201d.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u00abThe Holy Mother of \u2018Death\u2019\u00bb in Lipsi<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the dozens of monasteries and chapels that exist in Lips\u03b9, the \u201cOur Lady of \u2018Death\u2019\u201d holds a special place. In the icon of the Virgin Mary, instead of depicting the Mother of God baby-loving or sweet-loving the Divine infant in her arms, it shows the Mother of God holding her dead \u201cSon\u201d in her left arm, fixed on the Cross. We must go back a thousand years to find the history of the monastery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1088 AD when the island was called \u201cLepsiai\u201d and later \u201cLeipso\u201d, it was granted to Saint Christodoulos together with the holy island of Patmos with a Certificate of the emperor Alexius 1<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;Komnenos. The island was used as the \u201cMetohi\u201d of the Holy Monastery of Patmos where, in 1600, the Abbot allowed five monks from Mount Athos to practice asceticism there. The ascetics built the chapel with the architecture of a castle-monastery, due to the piracy that plagued the Aegean at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The years pass and reach WWII. A \u201cneighbor\u201d of the monastery supplied a little oil to the lamp of Panagia, despite the hunger and shortages that existed on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 25, 1943, the youngest of the family\u2019s daughters went to pray and placed six lilies on the icon of the Virgin Mary. The lilies withered and over time dried up. But, as August came, the dried lilies began to acquire green streaks and traces of juice. On August 23, when the monastery celebrated the Nine Days of the Dormition of the Virgin, the lilies had bloomed again with twelve white buds in full bloom. While, usually, each miracle happens once, the miracle of \u201cOur Lady of \u2018Grace\u2019\u201d continues to be repeated from 1943 until today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year hundreds of pilgrims come to Lipsi to worship and celebrate the Nine Days of the Virgin Mary, several Lipsians come from America and Australia.
