class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Dodecanese societies in America \u2013 Tilos<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The massive migration of the Tilians to America began at the beginning of the 20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;century and intensified with the predominance of the Young Turks in Turkey and the occupation of the Dodecanese by Italy. Most of the Tilians came from Tilos and several from Turkey and Egypt where were significant Tilian settlements. Most Tilians settled in New York and others went to Utica, NY and Milwaukee, WI. The Tilians were among the first Dodecanese and Greek Americans to establish societies in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The early Tilian society activity was contributed to the presence of several Tilians in New York, where existed other Greek American societies. Among them were several Tilians with society experience from Asia Minor and Egypt. From the last quarter of the 19<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century was in Nalzi in Asia Minor the Tilian \u201cPhilanthropic Brotherhood Nalziou\u201d with rich contributions to Tilos, and from the beginning of the 20th century the Tilian Brotherhood of Egypt \u201cProgress\u201d existed in Alexandria with remarkable benevolent activity in Egypt and Tilos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/a244-Tilos3-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/a244-Tilos3-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-68862\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a4\u03bf \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03c3\u03c5\u03bb\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c5 \u03c4\u03c9\u03bd \u03a4\u03b7\u03bb\u03af\u03c9\u03bd \u00ab\u03a0\u03c1\u03cc\u03bf\u03b4\u03bf\u03c2\u00bb \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u039a\u03c9\u03bd\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u03cd\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03b7. The bylaws of Tilian Society \u201cProgress\u201d in Constantinople (1907).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cProgress\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On January 2, 1910, 33 Tilians at a General Assembly in New York elected the first Board of Directors of the Tilian Philanthropic Fraternity \u201cProgress\u201d. The society must have been organized earlier, because the minutes state that the election was held after the reading of the constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The founding members of \u201cProgress\u201d are: Theodoros D. Antonis, Nicholas Vassilakis, John G. Vassiliadis, Michael Vergis, Stamatis Vergis, Nicholas Giannopoulos, Michael Emmanuel, Panagiotis Theodorou Karantonis, Andreas Kartapanis, Nicholas A. Kartapanis, Nicholas Konstandakis, Pantelis Konstandakis, John Logothetis, Leonidas Maggafas, Anthony Manikatos, Nicholas Notarios, Pantelis Pantelidis, Apostolos Papakentris, Zacharias Pentoubis, John Petroutsos, Nicholas Pourakis, Elias Scanavis, George Skandalios, Epaminondas Skularikis, Anthony Frantzis, George Frantzis, Achilleas Hatzimichalis, Nicholas M. Chrysotimos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officially, \u201cProgress\u201d was recognized by the state of New York on May 12, 1910, and in the same year its members reached 124. In the next four years, 68 new members were added from new immigrants who arrived in America before WWII. Within four years its members exceeded 200, a significant number for an island whose population of about 1500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around the same time, a second Tilian association was founded under the name \u201cPatris\u201d and with its expense the church of Metamorphose in Livadia was built in 1931. Later \u201cPatris\u201d merged into \u201cProgress\u201d and the Tilians united continued their collective activities. In 1910 \u201cProgress\u201d joint the \u201cPanhellenic Union\u201d founded in New York to coordinate the activities of Greek Americans. In 1915 \u201cProgress\u201d headquarters moved to Utica, but the following year returned to New York, for another two years a branch of \u201cProgress\u201d operated in Utica. \u201cProgress\u201d continued its course, with relative recovery after the great financial crisis (1928-1940), which paralyzed all society activity. Chatzikostas (1963-71) ), John Vagianos (1971-73), Pantelis Panagiotakis (1973-75), Elias Romaios (1975-81, 1990-92), Elias Lardopoulos (1981-84), Pantelis Karantonis (1984-88, 1994-96, 1998 -2004), Dimitris Mavromichalis (1988-90), Panagiotis Chatzigeorgiou (1992-94), John Giannourakis (1996-98), Katina Mavromichalis (2004-2008), Alekos Romaios (2008-10).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2010, when the Association turned 100 years old, the composition of the Board was: President Alekos Romeios, Vice President Pantelis Kammas, General Secretary Anna Karantoni, Special Secretary Matias Kaparou, Treasurer Stella Vogiatzi, Assistant Treasurer Thomas Kotsidis, members Popi Spantopanagou, Stella Perdikogiani, Maria Karantoni, Irini Karantoni, John Giannourakis, Panagiotis Hatzigeorgiou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first Tilian immigrants coming to America left their families behind, they intended to work for a few years, save two-three thousand dollars and return to Tilos to continue their lives. But they knew that, by leaving their island, they were leaving behind many problems with their families. Schools and churches had to be built, teachers paid, alleys maintained, springs tended, and country roads opened and cleared. They felt an obligation to help solve these problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>The \u201cTenth\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to its constitution, one of the main purposes of \u201cProgress\u201d was moral and material help in Tilos, and for the realization of this purpose they fixed the monthly dues of each member at two dollars. In 1910, when an ounce of gold was worth $20.67, $24 a year is equivalent to $2,745 today, or about 10% of an unskilled worker\u2019s wages. It was like the \u201cTenth\u201d they paid during the Turkish occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/a244-Tilos1-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/a244-Tilos1-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-68860\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a4\u03bf \u03ad\u03bc\u03b2\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u00ab\u03a0\u03c1\u03bf\u03cc\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u00bb. \u201cProgress\u201d emblem (1912).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the minutes of \u201cProgress\u201d, during the first 100 years (1910-2010), \u201cProgress\u201d allocated 230 golden pounds and 57,184 dollars which, depending on the time they were allocated, are equivalent to 1749 golden pounds or $1,364,220 in today\u2019s dollars. More than 80% was earmarked for infrastructure projects in Tilos and the rest for charitable and national causes in America and elsewhere. During WWII, \u201cProgress\u201d financially supported Tilian refugees who fled to Cyprus and the Middle East, the Patriarchate of Alexandria and the orphans of Cyprus after the Turkish invasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main purpose of \u201cProgress\u201d was to preserve the cultural heritage of Tilos in America and the nostalgia for the island, by organizing dances, festive events at Christmas, Easter and anniversaries of local holidays. The Association created the Youth dance group with local musical instruments and traditional costumes. In 1999, the late mayor of Tilos, Anastasios Aliferis, attended \u201cProgress\u201d annual dance and General Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, \u201cProgress\u201d helped those who found themselves unemployed or sick without any social security and took care of their medical and hospital care and the burial of the deceased and paid the costs of returning to the homeland of needy members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProgress\u201d also dealt with the Dodecanese issues. In 1943 joined the National Dodecanese Council of America and took part in the Pan-Dodecanese Conference in New York. In 1950, \u201cProgress\u201d spearheaded the establishment of the Dodecanese Federation and later, in 1970, its reorganization. Every year participates in the celebration of the Dodecanese union to Greece and in all the Dodecanese and Greek National events like the Greek National parade in New York. \u201cProgress\u2019\u201d great contribution to Greece, the Dodecanese and Tilos was recognized by the Academy of Athens, which awarded it in 1986.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>100<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;anniversary<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The solemn celebration for the centenary of \u201cProgress\u201d began on Sunday, February 7, 2010, in Astoria, New York with a memorial service at St. Catherine\u2019s Church, in memory of its founders and the hundreds of the other deceased members, who offered their services to the Association and Tilos for a whole century. Also, on Saturday February 27, the Fraternity\u2019s dance took place at Leonard\u2019s of Great Neck, New York, where the Consuls General of Greece and Cyprus and other officials attended. On the centenary celebration, \u201cProgress\u201d published a commemorative album with rich historical material about Tilos, the Fraternity and the Tilian community in America and the other society activities of Tilians everywhere. The Brotherhood also participated with a float in the New York National Parade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The festive events continued in Tilos, by the Tilian Association of Rhodes \u201cSaint Panteleimon\u201d with the cooperation of the Prefecture of Dodecanese, the Municipality of Tilos and Tilian businesses of Rhodes and Tilos. On Saturday August 21, with the Mayor Anastasius Aliferis as chairman, a day convention was organized in Livadia, on the theme of 100 years of \u201cProgress\u201d. Manolis Makris (SGTD president), Haris Koutelakis, Manolis Cassotis and Nikos Papaemmanuel spoke, and greetings were given by vice-prefect Adriana Bafiti, the president of \u201cProgress\u201d Alekos Romeios and the president of the Tilian Association of Attica John Kartapanis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday, after the regular service at the church of Taxiarches in Megalo Chorio, a memorial service was held in memory of the founders and deceased members of \u201cProgress\u201d and was followed by a reception at the monastery of \u201cSaint Panteleimon\u201d.
