class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first Halkian immigrants to America were sponge divers who settled in Tarpon Springs, Florida. First to arrive, in 1896, was Nicholas Giannoukas, who crossed the Atlantic with a three-masted sailboat, and in the following years, other Halkians followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Tarpon Springs<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1924, the Halkian society \u201cSaint Nicholas\u201d was founded in Tarpon Springs, which took its name from the patron saint of the island and patron of sailors. The first Board of Directors was as follows: president Konstantine Tsibikas, secretary Matthews Antoniou, treasurer Nicholas Stavrakis, members Elias Athanasiou, Lambros Skyriotis, Symeon Agelis and Fotis Eliou. In parallel with the preservation of the Halkian cultural heritage in America, \u201cSaint Nicholas\u201d helped Halki with public utility projects, especially during the Italian occupation and the first years after WWII when Halki had great needs. In 1927, the Association sent $4,500 (equivalent to 900 gold British pounds) to the island to carry out community projects. The Boys\u2019 School of Halki, donation of the Halkians of America.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Weirton WV<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few years before 1924, the Halkians in Weirton WV formed a society named \u201cChalki\u201d with the purpose of helping their island. Indeed, in 1924, the society appointed a committee in Halki consisting of Pavlidis, Stavroulakis and Melachrinos, to which it sent $2,000 (equivalent to 400 gold British pounds) for the repair of the school. In addition, and until 1928, the Association sent to Halki more than $9,000 (equivalent to 1800 gold British pounds) with which a new school was built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Baltimore<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1956, the Halkian society \u201cSaint John\u201d was founded in Baltimore, which in 1985 was reorganized as a women\u2019s society and in 1990 became men\u2019s and women\u2019s again. Throughout these years, among others, the following served as presidents: Gavriel Pantelidis, Frank Vassiliou, Lilika Vassiliadou-Hebeca and Antigone Zervou-Hatzigianni and as officials and members of the Board of Directors: John Boyas, Stasa Chrysovergi-Primikiriou, Anastasia Hatziefthymiou, Chrysanthi Mostri, John Stamatiadis, Neratzoulis Koutsonouris, Athena Neophytou, Chrysostomos Rigas, George Livaniou, Diogenes Papadopoulos, Theoni Lemonaki-Poulou, Nicholas Manolitsis, Toula Karyzou-Psychi, Anargyros Eliadis, Anthony Boyas and Ismene Karyzou-Manolitsis .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSaint John\u201d was involved in the preservation of the Halkian cultural heritage in America and the construction of public works in Halki. Every year, on the weekend that was closest to August 29, the Association had its prom with the participation of Halkians and other Greek American from all over America. As soon as the dance party was over, they would gather in a Halkian house and continue the feast. Also, the association organized excursions and cultural events to bring the Halkians of Baltimore closer together. In 1975, \u201cSaint John\u201d with the collaboration of the Dodecanese societies of Baltimore \u201cDiagoras\u201d of Rhodes and \u201cOlympos\u201d of Karpathos celebrated the 27<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;anniversary of the union of the Dodecanese to Greece with a cultural program. \u201cSaint John\u201d also participates in the Greek National parade in Baltimore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Halki, \u201cSaint John\u201d participated in the opening of the road to Saint John of Alarga in the location of Plagia, repaired the \u201cDome\u201d of Saint John of Alarga and the \u201cDome\u201d of Saint George Riakiou. In 1981, allocated $10,000 and, in collaboration with the Halkian society of Rhodes, helped with water supply and drainage projects and the construction of an electrically powered mechanical clock. To serve the pilgrims, provided beds for Saint John of Alarga, Saint George Riakiou, Saint George in Alimia and the monastery of Panormitis, and with chairs and cutlery for Saint John of Alarga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1994, after the decline of \u201cSaint John\u201d, \u201cSaint Nicholas\u201d was founded, in which they served as: president Diogenes Papadopoulos, vice-president John Alexandrou, secretaries Despina Alexandrou and Anastasia Hatzieuthimiou, treasurer Irini Kakkari-Papadopoulos. In Halki, \u201cSaint John\u201d participated in the paving of the road to Saint Lefteris, to build latrines in the monastery of Panormitis and help the needy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>New York<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the change of the American immigration law in 1965, several Halkians who immigrated to America settled in New York, where in 1970 the Halkian society \u201cSaint George\u201d was founded, which, like the other Halkian societoes, was interested in the preservation of Halkian cultural heritage in America and to aid their native island. \u201cSaint George\u201d with the other Dodecanese associations helped to reorganize the Dodecanese Federation and actively participated in the activities and events of the Federation and the Greek American community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1978, Archimandrite Nikitas Mandas visited America, who asked for the help to open a road from the town of Halki to the monastery of Saint John. The Archimandrite\u2019s call was answered by \u201cSaint John\u201d of Baltimore with $14,695, \u201cSaint Nicholas\u201d of Tarpon Springs with $8,215 and \u201cSaint George\u201d with a respectable amount.
