The presence of Jews in Rhodes is known since the Hellenistic era. Later, their numbers increased significantly, with the arrival of many Jews from Spain who were expelled by the Inquisition and moved to the Ottoman Empire. In 1900, when the immigration of Dodecanese Jews to America began, the Jews of Rhodes numbered around 4500-5000, concentrated in the \u201cOld Town of Rhodes\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seizure of power of the Ottoman Empire by the Young Turks in 1908 and the occupation of the Dodecanese by the Italians forced many Jews, among others Dodecanese, to emigrate. Among the 13,485 Dodecanese who immigrated to America in the first quarter of the 20th century, there were 1534 Jews, coming from Rhodes (1521), Kos (6), Symi (5), Karpathos (1) and Patmos (1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike the other Dodecanese who went to the coal mines, steel mills, and for sponge diving in Tarpon Springs, most Jews (who were urban) settled in big cities where there were large Jewish communities and they could find support and work: New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, Atlanta, New Orleans, Montgomery, Miami, Portland, York PA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jews of Rhodes, who went to New York, settled in Jewish communities, such as the one around Rivington Street. The others went by train to the Pacific coast and settled in Seattle, and from there, several continued south, to Portland and Los Angeles. Many others took the train to the Southern states and settled in Montgomery and from there moved, first to Atlanta and later to Birmingham, Miami and New Orleans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today there are more than 10,000 Jews of Dodecanese origin, known as Rodelis, living in the United States, 4000-5000 residing in New York, 3000 in Los Angeles, 1500 in Atlanta, 1000 in Seattle and the rest in Montgomery, Miami, New Orleans and other cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dodecanese Jews, like their Greek compatriots, founded associations to build synagogues, cultural centers and cemeteries, to help the sick and poor in America and Rhodes, to organize social events and in every way to be able to cope with the problems they faced in their new homeland. In 1909 in Seattle, they founded the association \u201cKoupa Ozer Dalim Ansce\u201d, with the aim of helping the poor Jews of Rhodes, and in 1910 the \u201cBrotherhood League of Rhodes\u201d was founded in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1912, Sephardic Jews of Los Angeles, mainly Rhodians, founded the \u201cSociety of Peace and Love\u201d (\u201cSociedad Ahavat Shalom\u201d) for religious purposes and to support the sick and poor. A few years later, in 1917, 45 young Jews from Rhodes founded the \u201cSociety of Peace and Progress\u201d (\u201cSociedad Pas y Progresso\u201d) in the same city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1908, the Rhodians and other Sephardic Jews founded a brotherhood in Montgomery and for the first time celebrated Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. A little later, in 1910, the Rhodian Jews of Montgomery founded the \u201cBenevolent Society\u201d, with the purpose of raising money to help their sick, poor and other afflicted countrymen. In 1910, the Sephardic Jews of Atlanta, mainly Rhodians, founded the \u201cLovers of Peace\u201d and for the first time celebrated Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur at the home of the President Isaac Hazan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
