In the decade 1965-75, with the change of the American immigration law, 2,000 Karpathians immigrated to America. Most went to New York and neighboring New Jersey resulting in an increase in the existing societies\u2019 membership and activity. Villages that did not have a society in New York made sure to establish them as well. Apart from Aperitans \u201cOmonoia\u201d (1932), Voladiotans \u201cSaint Anargyroi\u201d (1933), Pigadiotans \u201cPoseidon\u201d (1945), Menediatians \u201cOctober 5, 1944\u201d (1965), Olympitans \u201cProgress\u201d (1965) were founded or moved their headquarters, Spoitans \u201cSaint George\u201d (1967), Diafanians \u201cZoodochos Pigi\u201d (1968), Othitans \u201cSaint Panteleimon\u201d (1970), \u201cKarpathian Youth Union\u201d (1970), Arkasians \u201cYapanti\u201d (1971), Spoitans \u201cUnion of Spoa Mertona\u201d (1971), Mesohoritans \u201cVrysiani\u201d (1980) and Peliatians \u201cHoly Cross\u201d (1981). Thus, after the concentration of KEPA\u2019s activity in Pittsburgh, the creation of a pan-Karpathian organization became imperative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Organizing Assembly, chaired by George Halkias, adopted the proposal of doctor Elias Horatatzis for the establishment of the Karpathian Federation and appointed a committee to draft a statute which was approved on May 11, 1969. The Assembly then appointed a committee consisting of George Halkias and Manolis Cassotis for the legal recognition of the Karpathian Federation, which on October 1, 1969 was recognized by the state of New York under the name \u201cFederation of Karpathian Societies of America\u201d. From the seven Karpathian societies that existed in New York, the following joined the new organization: \u201cPoseidon\u201d, \u201cSaint Anargyri\u201d, \u201c5th of October\u201d, \u201cSaint George\u201d and \u201cZoodochos Pigi\u201d, and later: \u201cYpapanti\u201d (1971), \u201cKarpathian Youth Union\u201d(1972), \u201cOmonoia\u201d, \u201cSaint Panteleimon\u201d (1976), \u201cVrysiani\u201d (1979), \u201cHoly Cross\u201d (1981) and \u201cAssociation of Olympians\u201d Baltimore (1984).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December 14, 1969, the first Board of Directors was elected for the two years 1970-71: president Nicholas Ladis (Saint Anargyri), vice president Theofilos Sevdalis (October 5th<\/sup>), secretary Manolis Cassotis (Poseidon), treasurer Manolis Kontonikolas (Zoodochos Pigi), member Manolis Dimarhos (Saint George). The Board of Directors organized the first prom with great success in terms of participation and financial results. The president, with his personality and sober policy, raised the name and interest in the Federation and \u201cYpapanti\u201d became a member of the Federation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After two years of fruitful service, the second Board of Directors was elected, for the two years 1972-73, with doctor Elias Horatatzis as president. Again, the Federation was lucky in the first years of its course, Elias Horatatzis was a warm patriot with zeal, vision and collective experience, well-known and loved in the community, an excellent doctor. The new Board of Directors continued and widened the road opened by the previous one. The headquarters of the Federation moved to New Jersey, where most of the Karpathians lived. The feast of Vasilopita was established, and the dance parties continued with greater success. During the tenure of the Board, the Karpathian Youth Union and \u201cOmonoia\u201d became members of the Federation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first two presidents, although popular, did not seek re-election, they believed that the Federation should be renewed with new officers, a principle that followed for many years. Manolis Cassotis was elected President of the third Board of Directors for the two years 1974-1975. The term of office of the Board of Directors coincided with the visit of Metropolitan Apostolos to America. In 1974, the Turks landed in Cyprus and the Federation was on the side of the suffering Cypriots, helping politically, morally and financially. Also, the Federation organized the 1st<\/sup> Pan Karpathian Convention of America and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fourth Board of Directors for the two years 1976-1977, with George Manolios as president, participated in the celebrations for the 200 years of American independence in Yorktown VA and published a monumental album that was awarded by the Academy of Athens. During the tenure of the Board of Directors, \u201cSaint Panteleimon\u201d became a member of the Federation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the two years 1978-1979, the fifth Board of Directors was elected with Elias Diakolios as president. During the term of the Board of Directors the publication of the \u201cKarpathos\u201d magazine began and \u201cVrysiani\u201d became a member of the Federation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the two years 1980-81, the sixth Board of Directors was elected with Dr. Micheal Gergatsoulis as president. The new Board set the goal of creating a \u201cPan Karpathian Foundation\u201d recognized by the state of New Jersey and the registration of members began. During the tenure of the Board of Directors, \u201cHoly Cross\u201d became a member of the Federation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the two years 1982-83, the seventh Board of Directors was elected with John Mich. Zavolas as president, which coincided with the arrival of Metropolitan Nektarios to America. With the help of the Federation, $47,000 was collected to carry out charity projects in Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the two years 1984-85, the eighth Board of Directors was elected with Ioanna Alexiadis as president, the first woman to assume the presidency of a Greek American federation. The new Board established the awarding of scholarships. During the tenure of the Board, the \u201cOlympians Association\u201d of Baltimore became a member of the Federation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For four years 1986-89, the ninth and tenth Board of Directors were elected, chaired by John Sakellaris, whose tenure coincided with the candidacy of Michalis Doukakis for the presidency of America, and the Federation organized a Pan-Karpathian committee. The Federation donated $60,000 to Pan-Karpathian Foundation as a first installment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work of the Federation continued with the election of the other Board of Directors with presidents: Frixos Vozos (1990-91), Anthony Yuntikos (1992-93), George Manolios (1994-1999), Gregory Kossaris (2000-2001), Anthony Hatzimichalis (2002-2003), Minas J. Economidis (2004-2009). In 2009, an organizing committee was appointed, chaired by George Logothetis, with the aim of changing the course of the Federation. Because the dance party did not arouse the interest of the Karpathians, the committee changed its character with Karpathian traditional customs. The trial succeeded, bringing the Karpathians closer together and boosting the Federation\u2019s coffers. This was followed by the election of the Board of Directors chaired by Nick G. Diakos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accomplishments<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 55 years that have passed, the Karpathian Federation has a lot to show for its accomplishments. On Saturday Thanksgiving weekend, the annual ball was established with the election of Miss Karpathos, as well as the celebration of Vasilopita and the scholarships, the organization of excursions, and in 1974 the 1st<\/sup> Pan Karpathian Convention in Elizabeth NJ. The Federation participated in the celebrations for the 200 years of American independence in Yorktown, where Nick and Mairy Matthew were honored for their social and philanthropic contribution to America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Federation organized dinners to honor Karpathians and other Greeks from Greece and America. Honored the former presidents of Nickolas Ladis and Elias Horatatzis, the president of \u201cApantachou Karpathians\u201d Emmanuel Economidis, Metropolitan Apostolos, ministers Kostas Skandalidis, Aristotelis Pavlidis and John Valinakis, MPs George Hiotakis and George Nikitiadis, prefects Savvas Karagiannis and John Macheridis, the prefect Micheal Erotokritos, the mayors George Makris and Michael Ioannidis, the consuls general John Billimatsis and Dimitrios Serbos. Also awarded honorary degrees to professor Anthony Mastrogiannis, teacher Minas Minaidis, high priest Konstantine Halkias, dentist Nikos Matsakis, Manolis Cassotis and philanthropist Minas Papakostas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Federation financially supported the \u201cSociety of Karpathian Studies\u201d and the publication \u201cPrehistoric Karpathos\u201d by Professor Manolis Melas. It published the album \u201cKarpathian Heritage\u201d which was awarded by the Academy of Athens and from 1978-2003 published the magazine \u201cKarpathos\u201d. The Federation was one of the first Greek American organizations to use computers in gathering, classifying and computerizing the addresses of the Karpathians in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As soon as the Turks landed in Cyprus, the Federation mobilized the Karpathian community, in two days collected $10,000 to help the victims of the Cyprus tragedy and sent 8,000 telegrams to federal senators and congressmen supporting the Greek positions, participated in rallies and protests and rented dozens of buses for the transportation of the Karpathians to New York and the American capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Federation leveraged the strong Karpathian presence in New Jersey, in restaurant businesses and voters, to aid national interests. By voting and more by their financial contribution, the Karpathians helped elect Greek Americans and philhellenic American politicians to Congress and other offices. Among them: Senator Bill Bradley and Congressmen Jim Florio (later Governor), Frank Guarini, Robert Torriceli (later Senator) and Robert Menendez (later Senator). The real political power of the Karpathians of New Jersey was shown in 1988 in the election campaign of Michael Doukakis for the presidential office, when within three months collected $1,000,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Karpathian Federation made a decisive contribution to the reorganization of the Dodecanese Federation, participates in the celebration of the union of islands with Greece and other Dodecanese events. Together with all the Dodecanese, takes part in the National parade on New York\u2019s 5th avenue and often participates with her own float or finances the Dodecanese float. Also, the Karpathian Federation morally and financially supported the reorganization of the National Dodecanese Council of America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most important work of the Federation is the creation of the Pan-Karpathian Foundation, the \u201cchild of the Federation\u201d as they call it. The idea started through the Federation and with its actions was implemented. In addition to moral support, the Federation helped the Foundation financially, several times emptied its coffers so the \u201cKarpathian House\u201d could be bought and paid for, in total it allocated $120,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
