In the following years, when mass migration began, the Karpathians went to remote coal-bearing regions and by 1913 four active communities had been established in Canonsburg PA, Wheeling WV, New Castle PA and Dawson NM. The first three were near each other. The incident shocked them, and to be able to cope with the difficult situations they might face in a foreign country, they founded \u201cChrysostomos\u201d. The collective experience of the Karpathians who came from Aydin in Asia Minor, where the Karpathian society \u201cSaint Basil\u201d existed since 1890, and the Karpathians from Sudan, where \u201cOmonoia\u201d existed since 1907, contributed to the creation of \u201cChrysostomos\u201d. The name \u201cChrysostomos\u201d is related to \u201cSaint Basil\u201d of Aydin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The composition of the Board of Directors was as follows: president Hatzimanolis N. Alexiadis, vice-chairman Emmanuel N. Panagiotou, secretary Alexios Anastasiou Alexiadis, members Hazalexis N. Alexiadis, Michael Emm. Matsakis, H. J. Kapetanakis and Stamatios Diniakos. The president, before immigrating to America, lived in Aidin and Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With traditional celebrations, feasts, excursions and other events the Association tried to bring together the Karpathians of the surrounding areas and over time created a fund with the respectable amount of $1000 (equivalent to 200 golden British pounds). The following year the headquarters of the Association was moved to New Castle, but after a few years the activity of \u201cChrysostomos\u201d waned. Around 1920 the Karpathians of Dorothy WV founded a society which operated for a few years. Also in 1926, Karpathians living in Yorkville OH formed a society which also operated for a few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>KEPA<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gradually, the more progressive left the coal mines and moved to Pittsburgh where were better opportunities for work and education. Several of them learned English and joined labor unions which helped them gain collective organizing experience. The founding of KEPA was mainly led by young people: Nicholas Georgiadis, Evangelos Cafetzopoulos, Emmanouil Karakatsanis, Sokratis Eliadis, John Manolakakis, Emmanuel Kontonikolas, Emmanuel Kutsodontis, Minas Angelidis, John Drakomanolis, Christos Hatzilios, Frangiskos Epitropoulos of Margaro, Michael Leo, Alekos Alexiadis, Sakelarios Sakellaridis, George Vlastos, Pothitos (Economos) Karakatsanis, Emmanuel Manolakakis, Michaels Skevofylakas, Andreas Cafetzopoulos and George Grivas. Several of them served KEPA for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was followed by the election of the temporary and permanent Board of Directors: president Sokratis Eliadis, vice-president Minas Angelidis, treasurer John Manolakakis, secretary Minas Vardaoulis and members Emm. Karakatsanis, John Dracomanolis, Emm. Kontonikolas, Emm. Koutsodontis and Christos Hatzilios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KEPA has a federal organization with self-governing chapters in Pittsburgh, New York, Chicago, New Castle, New Kensington, Weirton, Steubenville, Yorkville, Canonsburg, Baltimore, Wheeling, Logan, Cleveland, Allentown, Washington, New Jersey, Tarpon Springs, Portland, Phoenix and Orlando. Later, a chapter was established in Karpathos by KEPA members who returned for permanent settlement. At first there were women\u2019s lodges, later the chapters became mixed. To the annual convention the chapters sent delegates who elected the Supreme Board of Directors which carried out the decisions of the convention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/a247-Karpathos8-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/a247-Karpathos8-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-69091\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u0397 \u00ab\u03a6\u03a9\u039d\u0397 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u039a\u0395\u03a0\u0391\u00bb \u03b5\u03ba\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03cc\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf 1931-1961. The \u201cVOICE of KEPA\u201d was published from 1931-1961.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A three-day convention was held each year in a different city on the 4th of July Weekend and later Memorial Day Weekend. A meeting was held on the first day and a Karpathian \u201cglenti\u201d (feast) followed in the evening. On the second day, the meeting continued with the election of the Supreme Board of Directors and in the evening, there was a ball. On the third day, the convention closed with an excursion to one of the parks in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The eight years 1932-40 were a testing period due to the economic crisis with a corresponding impact on every society activity. But 136 members were consistent in their financial obligations and in 1934 KEPA issued an album to celebrate its first five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, KEPA continued to help the Greek schools in Karpathos, as a reaction to the Italians\u2019 attempts to de-Hellenize the Dodecanese. Also, at the same time and subsequently, KEPA participated in the struggles of the Dodecanese Youth and the National Dodecanese Council for the liberation of the Dodecanese and the Integration of our islands with Greece, and at the same time helped the common Allied struggle by promoting government bonds (Savings Bonds for Freedom) and by collecting donations for the Greek War Relieve Fund and the American Red Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Orphans Fundraiser<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because during WWII Karpathos was in a war zone, the Karpathians in America assumed that in addition to death and destruction, the war would also create orphans in need of care and attention. To address this potential problem, KEPA conducted a pan-Karpathian fundraiser to help protect the innocent victims of the war. For the coordination and success of the fundraiser, KEPA appointed central and local committees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The central committee was as follows: president Vasilios Kritsotis, vice-president John Spanomanolis, secretary Vasilios M. Kostis, treasurer Matheus Mantopoulos, advisers Konstantine J. Mikropantremenos, G. Petropoulakis, Minas Stavrakis, Minas E. Giannakis and Francis Zervos. For the orphans, the chapters allocated the profits from their proms which amounted to $5,737. Another $10,758 came from 213 individual contributions. The total amount was $16,495 equivalent to 1,650 gold British pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the years following the war, KEPA turned its attention to Karpathos: it bought agricultural tools and seeds to help the island\u2019s agriculture and built the marble monument to the \u201cfallen\u201d that stood for half a century in the Administration square. KEPA also turned its interest to the issue of health. Because after the end of the war it was established that there were no orphans from war in Karpathos, the money that had been collected for the orphans remained undistributed which together with the interest exceeded the $20,000 dollars with which the health center in Karpathos was built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The war years and those that followed the liberation of the Dodecanese are considered the golden age of KEPA. In the period (1931-1961), apart from the monthly newspaper \u201cVOICE of KEPA\u201d, KEPA published several monumental albums, and its members exceeded 500. From 1928, when it was founded, until 1955, KEPA allocated more than $80,000 equivalent to 10,000 gold British pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, $11,000 had been accumulated in the central fund of KEPA and the chapters, which, in 1962, KEPA allocated for the purchase of a three-story building in downtown Pittsburgh. In 1970, when Pittsburgh began the redevelopment of the city\u2019s commercial center, KEPA\u2019s building was expropriated. With a third of the compensation, KEPA created the Karpathian Educational Trust, which offers scholarships to Karpathian students. In 1990, with the rest of the compensation money, KEPA bought a new building. KEPA also donated $5,000 to Metropolitan Nektarios\u2019 fundraising when he visited America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 1928 when KEPA was founded until 1993, the following presidents served: Nicholas Epitropoulos, Sokratis Eliadis, George Vassiliadis, John Filippidis, Nicholas Georgiadis, Minas Angelidis, George Mikropantremenos, George Rigas, Dimitrios Vassilaras, John Manolakakis, Michael Skoulos, Panagiotis Melissanos, Leonidas Manolakakis, Frangiskos Epitropoulos of Margaro, Emmanuel Karakatsanis, Peter Skoulos, John Hatzilios, George Harokopos, Minas Vardaoulis, John Angelou, Michael Manolakakis, Konstantinos Mavros, John N.
