Karpathian Societies in America<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from the Pan-Karpathian societies, there are dozens from all the villages that deal with the problems of their village and the members of the Karpathian communities who come from the same village. For Karpathian, Dodecanese and National issues the local societies cooperate with the Karpathian Federation, the Pan-Karpathian Foundation and KEPA and, because their members are in direct and personal contact with each other, can more easily mobilize the Karpathian community to act effectively. The life of the local societies is like the life of any living organism: some, after a while, disappear like never existed. Others show \u2013 quickly \u2013 signs of \u201cfatigue\u201d and remain inactive, while some \u2013 even after decades of life \u2013 appear active and efficient, dedicated to the purposes for which they were created. Because for most villages there are more than one society, it was chosen to be grouped them by each village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aperi<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until 1892, the political authorities of Karpathos were based in Aperi and to this day it is considered the spiritual capital of the island. This, Aperi\u2019s privileged position, is connected to the Aperitans society initiatives. From an early age, the Aperitans took the lead in all Karpathians society activities: \u201cSaint Basil\u201d in Aidin (1890), \u201cOmonoia\u201d in Sudan (1907), \u201cProgress\u201d in Ethiopia (1911 or 1916), \u201cChrysostomos\u201d in America (1914) and \u201cThree Hierarchs\u201d in Aperi (1916). With these conditions it was only natural that the Aperitans, who were the most numerous among the Karpathians of America, would establish the first local Karpathian society in the America and emerges as one of the most active Greek American societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following year, the Municipality of Aperi undertook the construction of a school building, the current high school building, with contributions and taxes from people living in Aperi. Because the money ran out before the project was completed, the Municipality turned to Aperitans everywhere asking for their help. The letters that arrived from Karpathos to America, from the Municipality and many of their relatives, troubled and moved the Aperitans of America who felt their obligation to help the homeless students, children, siblings, grandchildren and their close relatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 15, 1929, on the initiative of Polychronis Vasilakis and Andreas Lentis, a fundraising committee was created by Polychronis Vasilakis, Andreas Lentis, Polychronis Papadakis, Emmanuel Papageorgiou, Emmanuel Georgiadis, Nicholas Karakatsanis and Lambros Stamatiadis, with the aim of raising money for the completion of the school building. The committee organized sub-committees, all over America, where were Aperitans, and despite the unemployment and economic crisis prevailing in America at the time, they collected from the contributions of about 100 mostly Aperitans $4,000, equivalent to 800 gold British pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the good result, the amount was not enough to finish the project, and the committee turned to KEPA asking for help, since in the last grades of the school of Aperi there were students from all the villages of Karpathos. KEPA did not respond because it considered that the project was not pan-Karpathian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to the economic crisis, second fundraising could not be successful, and following the initiative of Andreas Diakonis and Lambros Stamatiadis, some Aperitans gathered at Elias Vassilakis\u2019 house to decide what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There, in October 1932, at Vassilakis\u2019 house in Brooklyn, those gathered decided to establish the Educational Brotherhood of Aperitans of Karpathos \u201cOmonoia\u201d with headquarters in New York and main purpose the completion of the school building. Shortly after the relevant procedure, the first Board of Directors was elected: president Polychronis Papadakis, vice president Elias Papageorgiou, general secretary Emmanuel Georgiadis, special secretary Nicholas Karakatsanis, treasurer Elias Vassilakis, collector Andreas Lentis, members Kostis Fragos, Andreas Diakonis, Lambros Stamatiadis, Nicholas Nisyrios and Dimitrius Panagiotou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immediately the Board began enrolling members from New York, organized chapters in Wheeling, Connecticut, Oakmont, and Pittsburgh and appointed representatives, where were Aperitans, in San Francisco, Chicago, Detroit, Ohio, Canonsburg, New Castle, Oakland, and Logan, and within a year almost all the Aperitans of America became members. The monthly membership dues were set at one dollar, quite high due to the economic crisis (One dollar was the daily wage for those who could find work, and twelve dollars a year was equal to two and a half gold British pounds). With all Aperitans united, the required amount was collected, and the school building was completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women Lodge<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through \u201cOmonoia\u201d, on the initiative of Marigo Stamatiadis and Marigo Papageorgiou, the Women\u2019s Lodge \u201cKyra Panagia\u201d was born. On June 26, 1942, following a relevant invitation, the Aperitans women met in Brooklyn and appointed an executive committee consisting of Marigo Stamatiadis, Marigo Papageorgiou and Irini Lentis. In addition to New York, they organized chapters in Wheeling with Eleni Sarri as organizer and in Chicago with Theodora Mikropandremenou, Kalliopi Liontakis, Efsevia Diavakis, Maria Dialanis and Stamatina Simiakopoulou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKyra Panagia\u201d helped and supplemented the work of \u201cOmonoia\u201d with events and with community projects in Aperi. In 1970, in New Jersey, \u201cKyra Panagia\u201d was recognized as an independent society, but when \u201cOmonoia\u201d changed from a male to a men\u2019s and women\u2019s society, \u201cKyra Panagia\u201d merged with \u201cOmonoia\u201d. In 1981 before \u201cKyra Panagia\u201d joined \u201cOmonoia\u201d, donated $3,000 to Metropolitan Nektarios\u2019 fundraising when he visited America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Projects and more Projects<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the High School building, which today houses the Lyceum, \u201cOmonoia\u201d helped Aperi and Karpathos in general with other projects related to education: a spacious Primary School building and a two-story building to house the High School and the Gymnasium. It also built the new cemetery of Aperi, offered significant sums for the construction and equipment of the ecclesiastical buildings of the Metropolitan church and Saint John and for the reconstruction and maintenance of monasteries. It constructed or offered significant sums for opening roads to Mertona, Katodio, Kyra Panagia, Ahata and Saint George in Vasses. It helped with the water supply, drainage, and irrigation of Aperi and its countryside. It built \u201cProteas\u201d stadium with all the infrastructure and services. The list includes dozens of other public benefit and charity projects with which \u201cOmonoia\u201d endowed Aperi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Equally important was the national work of \u201cOmonoia\u201d in America. Through the Dodecanese Youth and the National Dodecanese Council, participated in the struggle for the liberation and integration of the Dodecanese in Greece and on October 24, 1943, participated in the Pan-Dodecanese Congress in New York. It also morally supported all Karpathians \u2013 and their families \u2013 who served in the American armed forces and helped the common Allied cause by purchasing War Bonds and donating to the Greek War Relief Fund and the Red Cross. In 1972 \u201cOmonoia\u201d became a member of the Karpathian Federation and later donated $10,000 and became a member of the Pan-Karpathian Foundation, where its contribution to the \u201cKarpathian House\u201d reached $25,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Culture<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOmonoia\u201d showed great interest in the Karpathian customs and the preservation of the Karpathian cultural heritage in America. From time to time organize feasts and the traditional festivals of Zoodochos Pigi, Saint Charalambous, the carnival \u201cPiperi\u201d, the \u201cGiles\u201d on the Sunday of Orthodoxy and \u201cKatsuna\u201d. It also celebrates Christmas and Vasilopita, with Santa Claus and presents for the children. In recent years, many Aperitans come from Greece to America to shop and attend \u201cOmonoia\u2019s\u201d Christmas celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With dance and song, it tries to bring the new generation closer to the tradition of Karpathos. Once a week, \u201cOmonoia\u201d teaches more than 50 children and young people the traditional Karpathian songs and dances. Many children who take part in the cultural events that take place in the summer in Aperi are born and raised in America!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For 20 years (1943-1962) \u201cOmonoia\u201d published its monthly \u201cBulletin of Omonia\u201d, on the initiative of Nicholas Panagiotou. After his return to Karpathos, the project was continued by George Hatzidimitriou. Characteristic of the Bulletin was its patriotic pulse and love for Aperi. It circulated in America, Greece and other countries, among Aperitans and other Karpathians. It contained articles, society, social and general interest news from the communities, Karpathos and other countries. Alongside the Bulletin, \u201cOmonoia\u201d published dozens of albums with rich historical and social content. The Bulletin and the albums are an inexhaustible source of information for scholars of the Karpathian community in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognition<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Greek State recognized \u201cOmonoia\u2019s\u201d national contribution in America and to its native village. King Paul, following the proposal of the National Foundation, awarded a diploma and a Royal Award to \u201cOmonoia\u201d and, after the Royal Notable recommendation, a diploma to the Women\u2019s Lodge.
