Karpathian Societies in America Volada<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As happened with other local societies, the need for the construction of a school building gave the initial impetus to start the Voladiotans\u2019 society activity in America. The Voladiotan immigrants, leaving their village, could not forget that the school teaching took place in the \u201cgynokonitis\u201d (church section for women), in a room in the courtyard of the church or in various houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steubenville<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like the other Karpathians, most Voladiotians worked in the coal mines in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, from where their first society effort began. According to oral information, the first Voladiotan society in America was founded in 1926 and the following year it raised funds for the construction of a school building. The society was officially founded on August 18, 1933, in Steubenville OH under the name \u201cOur Lady of Plagia\u201d. Later, in 1935, the society was renamed \u201cSaint Anargyroi\u201d because there was a society of Mesochoritans with the name of Panagia which celebrates on the same day. In 1940 the association was recognized in West Virginia under the name \u201cSaint Anargiros Progressive Educational Association of Voladians of Karpathos Island\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The headquarters of the \u201cSaint Anargiroi\u201d moved from town to town between Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia depending on where most of the society\u2019s members and officers resided. The composition of the first Board of Directors was as follows: president George Economou, secretary George Venetis (Panagiotis Christodoulakis), treasurers Nicholas Manolios and Panagiotis Venetis (Kostis Halkias), collector Emmanuel Paros, members Kostis Halkias, Anthony Vergis and Elias Kalafatis. In addition to the above, Michael Manolios, Minas Chrysofos and Herculis Vergis attended the General Assembly. For the better operation of the society and the success of the fundraising, committees were appointed in Charleston, Logan and New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Board of Directors worked and organized methodically. On the first of the month the collector made his \u201cvisit\u201d to collect the monthly dues (one dollar a month, equivalent to two and a half gold British pounds per year). The Board with the dues, dances (the first society dance was held on February 16, 1935 in Weirton WV), the raffle and picnics (the first picnic was on September 13, 1936 in Harmarville PA) raised a respectable amount of money. The Board of Directors appointed a committee in Karpathos consisting of: Minas Minaidis (secretary), John V. Makris (treasurer) and Minas Karaminas (project manager), and after consultation with the Board, the Committee bought a plot of land where the school was finally built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the fundraising continued with the same interest, and appointed representatives: in Charleston and Logan, Panagiotis Manolios, Minas Komninakis and Panagiotis Christodoulakis, and in New York, Michael Makris and George Antimisiaris. When WWII began in 1939, communication with Karpathos became difficult and then stopped completely. But the fundraising continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the money raised was enough to build the school, the General Assembly in Logan on December 16, 1943, revised the original plans for the school and decided to continue the fundraising. The fundraising committee consisting of Minas Stavrakis, Nicholas Halkias, Vasilis Manolios, John Lagonikos, Alexandrer Georgiadis, Minas Vardaoulis, Panagiotis Christodoulakis, Minas Chrysofos, Nicholas Stavrakis, Minas Minaidis, Nicholas Kostis, George Petropoulakis, Minas Kourouglos, Michael Manolios, John Vergis, Michael Makris and Manolis Papamanolis worked with interest. It was necessary to make several trips to several Karpathians communities, where the Voladiotians and other Karpathians gave two and three times until the required amount was gathered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, after the liberation, at the beginning of the 1950s, there was the money to build the current school of Volada. On April 12, 1952 the society sent the school board $14,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York and New Jersey<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 1950s, for economic reasons, many Karpathians, including Voladiotians, moved from the coalmine regions of Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia to big cities, and especially to New York, where most of the Voladiotians gathered and moved the headquarters of the \u201cSaint Anargyroi\u201d\u00bb in 1956.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, in the decade 1965-75, with the big migration of the Karpathians to America, the largest Voladian community in America was created in New Jersey. There, in 1960, \u201cSaint Anargyroi\u201d\u00bb ended up, where found suitable ground to act and grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to their numerical superiority, the New Jersey Voladians were distinguished for their performance in the restaurant business. The financial strength of the Voladiotans, combined with their well-known generosity, gave \u201cSaints Anargyroi\u201d the opportunity to increase their income and society activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, a women\u2019s lodge named \u201cPanagia Plagia\u201d was founded, which operated for several years. The composition of the first Board of Directors was as follows: president Maria Pelechrinis, vice president Kokona Halkias, secretary Kalliopi Venetis, treasurer Rina Litos, members Evangelia Chrysafinis, Paraskevi Kassiotis, Zoe Sakellaris. Later \u201cPanagia Plagia\u201d united with \u201cSaints Anargyroi\u201d, and in 2009 Fanis Hryssou was elected the first female president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The projects continue<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the completion of the School, \u201cSaints Anargyroi\u201d continued their philanthropic activities with public utility projects in Volada: football field, cemetery, water transfer from the spring of Saint Nicholas, construction of an aqueduct, water supply and sewerage network, opening roads to Lastos, Kyra Panagia and Sain Savvas in Kouri, construction of a hall in Arhistratigos chapel in Lastos and beautification works in Kyra Panagia. Since its founding, the society has allocated more than $640,000, worth millions of dollars today, for various projects in Volada and America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the beginning, the society, in collaboration with other Karpathian and Dodecanese associations, showed interest in the liberation and integration of our islands with Greece and on October 24, 1943, participated in the Pan-Dodecanese Congress in New York. Also, showed similar interest after the landing of the Turks in Cyprus in 1974, supporting the Philhellenic politicians of New Jersey. \u201cSaints Anargyroi\u201d were among the founding members of the Karpathian Federation and later donated $10,000 and became a member of the Pan-Karpathian Foundation where its donation for the \u201cKarpathian House\u201d reached $18,500. Among others, \u201cSaints Anargyroi\u201d published historical albums for its 50th<\/sup> and 75th<\/sup> anniversary and recently for its 90th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among those who served as \u201cSaints Anargyroi\u2019s\u201d presidents and with rich Pan-Karpathian society activity are Nikolaos Ladis, George Manolios, John Sakellaris and Andreas Diakos, who served as presidents of the Karpathian Federation and or the Pan-Karpathian Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pilgrimage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 8, 1998 \u201cSaints Anargyroi\u201d organized a field trip to Steubenville OH to honor its late members and the place where the society was \u201cborn\u201d. On the occasion, a visit was made to the cemeteries of the area located in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania to prey and lay flowers on the graves of the pioneer Voladiotans immigrants and founders of the society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 23, 1999, \u201cSaints Anargyrois\u201d founded the cultural committee \u201cXasteria\u201d, with the aim of upgrading the cultural society\u2019s activities, with lectures and visits to historical places and other attractions of America. Among others, they visited the American capital, Baltimore, Boston, Las Vegas, Niagara Falls and the Hoover Dam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abApollo\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1979, the \u201cApollo\u201d sports club was born from \u201cSaints Anargyroi\u201d with the aim of cultivating the sports spirit among young people. \u201cApollo\u201d collaborates and completes the work of \u201cSaints Anargyroi\u201d. In the first year it participated in the local championship and won first place in the second division. Then it competed with good performances in the first division. From the income of its events, \u201cApollo\u201d financially supported the synonyms society in Volada and many of its athletes compete with its colors during the summers in Karpathos. Also, with the amount of $10,000 \u201cApollo\u201d helped to complete the stadium in Volada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
