The Revolution of October 5, 1944 \u2013 Mussolini\u2019s \u201cMare Nostrum\u201d was shaken in Karpathos<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the revolution of 1821, Karpathos and all the Dodecanese continued to fight to be integrated into Greece. So, on October 5, 1944, after the departure of the last Germans from Karpathos, the Karpathians rebelled against the Italians that the Germans left in their place and declared the Union of Karpathos and neighboring Kasos with Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a historical point of view, it is interesting to investigate the situation that prevailed among the Italians in Karpathos, who a year or two earlier believed in the \u201cMare Nostrum\u201d proclaimed by Mussolini (The Italians, as successors of the Romans, considered that the entire Mediterranean belonged to them). Fortunately, in the archive \u201cArchivio dell\u2019 Ufficio Storico dello Stato maggiore dell\u2019 Esercito \u2013 Roma\u201d, as well as in other archives located in Italy and other countries, there are several documents that help the research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Colonel Francesco Imbriani, military commander of Karpathos and Kasos, the Italian forces consisted of 2,500 men with two infantry battalions, coastal artillery and other smaller forces in southern Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Morale started to drop<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The morale of the men began to fall after the battle of El Alamein and Stalingrad, and sharply after the occupation of Tunisia and the landing of the Allies in Sicily, with the result that Karpathos was at the front line in the Eastern Mediterranean, where the Allies navy and air force prevailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a report by Maresciallo Enrico Penna, the morale of the Italians had fallen significantly: \u201cAmong most of the officers, the conviction has arisen that the war is lost, and that further resistance is useless. The reasons adduced in support of their view were the great superiority of the means at the disposal of the Anglo-Americans, the (Italian) political regime, and so on. These reasons were pretentious and showed the lack of will to fight. However, the soldiers, out of a great and generous love for the Fatherland, would give everything they had most valuable, if they were morally supported by the officers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those who can want to leave<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every Italian, who found a way, tried to leave Karpathos and return to Italy. Lieutenant Michele Memola, who came to replace another who was leaving, reports: \u201cMore than all, one lieutenant, who stood up had me more than all in his heart and filled me with thanks, because I, my majesty \u2026 came to replace him, to move away from here and return to his homeland.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A military priest who came to Karpathos reports: \u201cI met the chaplain of the military hospital, who left on leave and never came back!\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mussolini has fallen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Penna reports: \u201cOn hearing of the armistice, officers and soldiers were relieved, relieved and they were free to return home. None of them wanted to hear and understand that the war is not over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memola reports: \u201cPatruno very excited and without hesitation shouted to me: Mussolini has fallen, and Badoglio has taken his place!\u201d \u2026 he showed me where Badoglio\u2019s photo where Mussolini was and in the wastebasket the photos of Mussolini cut into very small pieces. Previously Pizzigoni, assessing the situation, writes to his wife: \u201cSo far we have our peace \u2026 We are in a great disturbance \u2026 We see the enemies approaching, but soon it will be over, and in any case the change will please everyone, whatever it may be the fate that will then be in store for us\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Germans are coming<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 3 September 1944, the German VI Battalion of the 999 Festung Regiment landed on the Karpathos and, on the orders of Admiral Inigo Campioni, Colonel Francesco Imbriani handed over the military command of the Karpathos to the German Captain Robert Bethege, and Imbriani took over as the political representative of the Italian Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Germans herded the Italians into prisoner of war camps and, in the confusion that ensued, several of their weapons ended up among the Karpathians, mostly Menediatians and Arcasians and some Pygadiotians and Olympitans. The gathered Italians who remained loyal to the Badoglio Government were sent to Crete and from there to Piraeus, with destination the POW camps in Germany. Several lost their lives by allied submarines and planes during their journey from Karpathos to Crete and from there to Piraeus. Until February 10, 1944, when Imbriani left for Crete and from there to a prisoner of war camp in Germany, Karpathos had been emptied of the great majority of the Italians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some stayed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Italians, for more security or for sentimental ties, declared cooperation with the Germans and stayed in Karpathos, 56 as military volunteers who manned coastal artillery and 34 as unarmed auxiliaries. With them, for reasons of age, remained Artillery Captain Armando Amenduni, who after Imbriani\u2019s departure took over as political representative of the Italian Government and moved to Aperi in a private house in Valadu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the Police, Finanza and some employees stayed in Karpathos, such as doctor Cutolo with some health workers. The military accountant lieutenant Ennio Grimaldi was suffering from jaundice and unable to travel, with his aide Roselli they stayed in a private house in Aperi in Lori. As well as the Italian supply lieutenant Antonio .?., married to a Karpathian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Loyal to Mussolini<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the Italian officers associated with the R.S.I. (the Repubblica Sociale Italiana was typically under Mussolini in Northern Italy under German protection), Lt. Col. Arturo Agnesi, was in command of the 9th Battalion. Because he wanted to stay in Karpathos for more security, he claimed that he was wounded in the hand on September 20, 1943 and recovered on January 30, 1944 (!), until the Germans sent him to Crete and then to Northern Italy where, on April 10, 1944, he took over as Commander of the work battalion (Fuenza) of Ravenna. Others who remained loyal to the fascist ideology were staff sergeant Giovanni Ranelletta, who had also served as a teacher at the Italian school, and Mottola at Finanza in Diafani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Runaways<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Italians who had the courage escaped, and with the help of the Karpathians they hid in isolated country stables. Most of them went to the area of \u200b\u200bMesochori. The Germans issued an order: \u201cThose Italians who will not surrender in due time would be executed, and those who helped them would be severely punished.\u201d Almost all surrendered before the deadline. Alessandro Orofino, who was hiding in \u200b\u200bVlya in Aperi, who did not surrender, was arrested, after given away, and executed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Captain Alberto Patruno fled to Mesochori, where the station master Michele hid him and sent him to the spy mission (Litos and Krasopoulos). The Germans took ten hostages from Mesochori and Spoa and would execute them if Patruno was not found alive or dead. At the behest of the Allied Headquarters, to avoid further bloodshed, they killed Patruno and dumped his body in a ravine. At the intercession of Imbriani and Penna, Dr. Cutulo \u201cdiagnosed\u201d that Patruno died of a heart attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lieutenant Michele Memola was another Italian officer who fled to Mesochori, where he was hidden and fed by the people of Mesochori at the risk of their lives. But, after five months, on February 17, 1944, not suffering the chase, he decided to surrender. The Germans tortured him but did not execute him and sent him as a prisoner of war to Germany, where he was released by the Allies and returned to Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only escapees that were saved were some marines who on September 30 in a rowboat, together with an infantry captain, an airman and two soldiers left Tristomo and went to Tilos and then to Symi, where they were integrated into the Italian garrison of the island. Also on September 27, three Italian soldiers in a small boat set off for Kastelorizo \u200b\u200bbut were lost at sea. On October 7 they were found by an English destroyer which took them to Alexandria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Espionage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the surrender of the military authority to the Germans, Christofer Sakellaridis and John Economidis (Giannakas) approached Imbriani who gave them a map with the fortifications of Karpathos and the positions of the Germans. Imbriani then created the Imbriani-Penna-Logothetis Diakidis-Sacellaridis-Giannakas chain which carried military information from Maria Tereza, the mistress of a German officer, to the Allied espionage mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Germans are leaving<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the Allies landed in France, the Germans decided to bring back as many forces as they could to Germany. For Karpathos, the German plan provided for the withdrawal of 600 Germans and the assignment of the garrison of the island to a company of 200 soldiers under Lieutenant Hans Vogeler around \u200b\u200bPigadia and the destruction of the other military installations. Then the Germans decided to withdraw this company as well. The Italians serving in the artillery with the auxiliaries were released and joined the other Italians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The withdrawal took place in four missions, the first in early September 1944 and the last on October 4. The last two expeditions from Rhodes brought 80 Italian prisoners, so as not to feed them, and left them with the Italians who were collaborating with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Karpathians revolt<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As reported by Lieutenant Hans Vogeler, the day before his departure he invited the Italians, who would at least formally take over the administration of the island, and some of the leading personalities of Karpathos to cooperate with each other. But the next day, the Karpathians rebelled against the Italians who had no will to fight and declared the Union of Karpathos and Kasos with Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreement the Italians reached with the Revolutionary Committee, in general, was: 1) The soldiers would remain unarmed. 2) The presence of Italians was prohibited in Menetes and Arkasa. 3) In Pigadia the presence of the Italians was allowed under the supervision of the revolutionary unit which was under the command of the former sergeant of the Greek army George Paragioudakis. 4) In the other villages, the presence of the Italian Police was allowed, which could only act at the request of the Revolutionary Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The position of the Italians worsened when the Revolutionaries broke into the Italian food warehouse, and they too faced the food problem like the Karpathians. Thus, As Ennio Grimaldi reports, the Italians were relieved when \u201cA small band of daring Karpathians went to Egypt in a rowboat and informed the British headquarters that the island was liberated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The British are coming<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On October 17, 1944, alerted by the seven Karpathian patriots who went to Egypt, the British arrived with the destroyers Terpsichore and Cleveland. Two platoons surrounded the Italian Headquarters and the Italian depot, where 50 to 60 Italians surrendered without any sign of hostility. Another detachment searched the surrounding houses, where several Italians were arrested. The platoons with two trucks and accompanied by rebels went to the villages and returned with several Italians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
