Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The society activity of the Arkasians of America, from its beginning and for a long time, coincided with the Menediatians due to the kinship and other ties that existed between the two neighboring villages. Given, therefore, their good cooperation, they founded in 1921 in Wheeling WV the Meneto-Arkasian society with the aim of strengthening relations and mutual assistance between its members and the creation of community projects in both villages. When later in 1928 KEPA was founded, the Arkasians turned their interest to KEPA and the activities of the common society faded away, while, on the contrary, their fundraising committees continued their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 29, 1954, when Metropolitan Apostolos visited Yorktown VA, the Arkasians residing there decided to establish a society. Saint Sophia in Winter Haven took its name from the monastery of Saint Sophia in Arkasa.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The following year the society was reorganized in Baltimore and the permanent Board of Directors was elected: President Alekos Daskalakis, Vice President Vasilios Skevofylakas, Secretary John Nouaros, Treasurer Emmanuel Daskalakis and members Michael Daskalakis, George Minadakis and Elias Eliadis. The society extended its activity to the other Arcasian communities. In East Liverpool OH, George Brass and the brothers Elias, Nicholas and John Felouzis and in New York John Ioannidis became members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Elizabeth NJ<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the decade 1965-75, with the group migration of the Karpathians to America, the numerous and dynamic Arcasian community of Elizabeth NJ was created which gave the necessary impetus for the re-establishment of \u201cYpapanti\u201d. Thus, on September 20, 1970, 24 Arkasians met at the \u201cDemocratic Greek American Club\u201d with John Meraklis as president and Theophilos Pittas as secretary and decided to reestablish \u201cYpapanti\u201d. On the same day, a committee was appointed consisting by John Meraklis, Kostas Protopsaltis, John Vassiliadis, Kostas Angelidis, Manolis Prikis and John Lyristis, which, on November 1<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;of the same year, organized the first society\u2019s dance with great success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 21, 1971, after the legal recognition of the society by the state of New Jersey, the General Assembly elected the first Board of Directors: president Kostas Angelidis, vice-president John Katogyritis, secretary Vassilis Emmanoulidis, treasurer John Meraklis, members George Hatzakis, Michael Hatzipapas and Polychronis Peliaris. On the same day, the General Assembly decided the society to join the newly established Karpathian Federation. On September 26, the same year, the society held a fundraising for the church of Saint Theodoros in Kefala, Arkasa, which yielded $2,600.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Tour<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the two years 1973-74, during the presidency of Vassilis Halkias, the society showed even greater activity. Halkias went by bus to Allentown PA, Cleveland OH, Yorktown VA, Florida and wherever else there were Arcasian communities in America. He enrolled members, appointed representatives for the society and collected donations for community projects in Arkasa, such as the Elementary School. Also in 1974, after the landing of the Turks in Cyprus, \u201cYpapanti\u201d helped the victims of the Turkish invasion with a significant amount of money. The society was given the name \u201cYpapanti\u201d in honor of the main church of Arkasa.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As in previous years, the Arkasians were also interested in Pan-Karpathian issues. On October 10, 1990, the General Assembly decided that \u201cYpapanti\u201d join the Pan-Karpathian Foundation and on April 28, 1991, it became a member by paying $10,000. Later, on November 8, 1997, \u201cYpapanti\u201d purchased $5,000 worth of bonds of the Foundation. Also, in 2005 allocated $1,500 for the configuration of the society\u2019s office in the \u201cKarpathian House\u201d. Since its establishment, and for the entire period of its long and fruitful activity, \u201cYpapanti\u201d continues with the current president Nick Tsambounieris to prove that it remains one of the most active Karpathian societies, which participates in the Pan-Karpathian Scholarship program and supports all other initiatives of the Pan-Karpathian Foundation and the Karpathian Federation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, \u201cYpapanti\u201d continued to contribute to its native village for social projects and purposes such as: in 1990 sent $5,000 for the completion of the soccer field, in 1993 supplied Arkasa\u2019s School with computers and in 2004 with a photocopier, in 2002 sent $2,000 for the repair of Arkasa\u2019s Mansion, in 2006 helped the church of Saint Sophia in Arkasa with $2,000, in 2010 bought and sent 90 tables for Saint Panteleimon chapel in Kato Gyri. Also, in 2003, \u201cYpapanti\u201d donated $5,000 for the \u201cArkasian House\u201d in Piraeus. In 2010, the society donated $15,000 for the iconography of Ypapanti, the central church of Arkasa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Florida<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1958 with the move of Manolis Houvardas to Bartow FL and the mass migration of Karpathians to America in the decade of 1965-75, another large Arcasian community was created in Central Florida with a dynamic presence in the restaurant business. Every year on Christmas Day and Easter, the local Arkasians and other Karpathians gathered at John\u2019s Restaurant of Manolis Houvardas to celebrate and maintain the ties between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From these contacts and on the initiative of Manolis Houvardas came the society of Arkasians of Florida \u201cSaint Nicholas\u201d with Manolis Houvardas as president.
