Schools and churches had to be built, teachers and doctors paid, and roads built. The feeling that they had an obligation to help solve these problems led to the creation of Dodecanese societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, born and live on the islands, imbued with their popular culture, gave them another impetus to create societies with the aim of recalling and experiencing the customs and ways of life of the islands and strengthening mutual support in the difficult hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>He would remain unburied<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1914 a poor Dodecanese died and would have remained unburied if they had not raised a fund to bury him. The incident shocked them and to cope with the difficult situations they would face in a foreign country, they founded a society. When a needy Dodecanese was unemployed, the society financially covered him until he found work, and if he fell ill, the society sent him to the countryside to recover. The work and more so the future of their children forced them to stay in America, knowing that there was a risk of cutting the children off from their cultural heritage and this was the primary reason that societies were created. Only through the societies they tried to save what they could for themselves and even more so for their children. The societies filled a social void and, in a way, replaced the island and even their village and became a pole of attraction for their compatriots and a center for organizing group events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Close to their roots<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, with the aim of generating revenue to help their island, the societies organized events, which had another much more important goal: to bring the new generation closer to their roots. In addition to the established evening dances, where the music and dances of each island predominated, the societies established Christmas, Halloween and Easter celebrations. They organized excursions and celebrated the Feast of Saints and traditional festivals of their island. With these events, they gave the newcomers the opportunity to maintain ties with each other and with their island and to forget the bitterness of foreignness. To bring young people closer together, they founded dance groups and helped to create Greek schools. In this way the immigrants would meet, with the result that marriages would occur between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, during the difficult years of slavery, when the Italians put restrictions and obstacles in the operation of Greek schools, the societies rushed to help by paying the teachers\u2019 salaries. Several times societies emerged from these committees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first Dodecanese societies were founded by the Nisyrians, Telians and Koans. While the Dodecanese from the other islands found work in the coal mines and steel mills of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio and in the sponge diving yards of Tarpon Springs, most from these three islands went to New York, where Greek-language newspapers circulated and Greek American societies had begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rhodian society effort began with immigrants from certain villages, but soon the Pan-Rhodian association \u201cApollo\u201d emerged, which established men\u2019s chapters and women\u2019s lodges in all the Rhodian communities in America. A couple of local societies continue to exist. The same thing happened with the Koans with the creation of \u201cHippocrates\u201d. The Nisyrians founded three associations, one for each village, and after a century of creative activity they united and formed the \u201cNew York Nisyrian Association\u201d, which incorporated the women and the Youth societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Karpathians founded the Pan-Karpathian society \u201cChrysostomos\u201d and then KEPA (\u201cKarpathian Educational and Progressive Association\u201d) which established men\u2019s chapters and women\u2019s lodges in all the Karpathian communities. But, from 1932, societies representing each of the 10 villages of Karpathos began to be created to help solve the problems their villages were facing. Later, these societies created the Karpathian Federation and the Pan-Karpathian Foundation for Pan-Karpathian Purposes. In 1996 the \u201cPan-Kalymnian Conference\u201d was established in which the Kalymnian societies from New York, Tarpon Springs FL and Campbell OH participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Pan-Dodecanese associations<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from the societies that concerned each island, Dodecanese societies were also created after the conquest of the Dodecanese islands by the Italians and in their attempt to&nbsp;<a>dehellenize<\/a>&nbsp;them. In response, the \u201cNational Union of Dodecanese Americans\u201d (1918), the \u201cCommittee of Dodecanese Americans\u201d (1924) and the \u201cFriendly Society of Dodecanese Americans\u201d (1926) were created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Systematic work began in 1934 with the founding of the \u201cDodecanese Youth of America\u201d \u200b\u200b(DYA), and then the \u201cNational Dodecanese Council of America\u201d \u200b\u200b(NDCA) in 1940. All other Dodecanese societies contributed to the efforts of DYA and NDCA for the liberation of the Dodecanese and its Integration with Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1950, after the Union of the Dodecanese with Greece and the completion of the purposes of the DYA and the NDCA, the Dodecanese Federation was founded which represents the Dodecanese community and continues to fight for national issues, in favor of Cyprus and the Greekness of Macedonia and, to achieve this, supports Greek Americans and pro-Hellenic politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>In 20 States<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were 168 societies, together with their branches, founded by the Dodecanese in America in the following 20 states: New York-52, Pennsylvania-26, Ohio-21, New Jersey-14, Maryland-11, West Virginia-11, Florida-7, Connecticut-4, Illinois-4, Indiana-3, Virginia-3, Texas-2, Washington DC-2, Washington State-2, Arizona, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Oregon, South Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/a262-dodeca12.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/a262-dodeca12-1024x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-70837\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u0395\u03c0\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03ac \u03bb\u03b5\u03c5\u03ba\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1 \u00ab\u0393\u03bd\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1\u03b3\u03cc\u03c1\u03b1\u00bb, \u00ab\u0391\u03b3\u03af\u03bf\u03c5 \u0399\u03c9\u03ac\u03bd\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u0398\u03b5\u03bf\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c5\u00bb, \u00ab\u039e\u03ac\u03bd\u03b8\u03bf\u03c5 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03a6\u03b9\u03bb\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u00bb \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u039a\u0395\u03a0\u0391. \u201cGnomagora\u201d, \u201cSaint John the Theologian\u201d, \u201cXanthos Filikos\u201d and KEPA\u2019s anniversary albums.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Christianity and Ancient Greece<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The names of 34 societies are related to local churches and monasteries dedicated to Christ, the Virgin Mary and Saints: \u201cChrist\u201d, \u201cHoly Cross\u201d, \u201cYpapanti\u201d, \u201cVirgin Portaitissa of the Castle\u201d, \u201cVirgin Thermiani\u201d, \u201cOur Lady of the Cave\u201d, \u201cOur Lady of \u2018Death\u2019\u201d, \u201cThe Dormition of the Virgin\u201d-3, \u201cOur Lady of Plagia\u201d, \u201cOur Lady of the Fountain\u201d, \u201cOur Lady of the Lilies\u201d, \u201cEntry of the Virgin\u201d, \u201cEvangelism\u201d, \u201cSt. George\u201d-4, \u201cSaint John the Theologian\u201d-2, \u201cRevelation of John the Theologian\u201d, \u201cProdromos\u201d, \u201cSaint John Prodromos of Vrykus\u201d, \u201cSaint John\u201d, \u201cChrysostomos\u201d, \u201cSaint Panteleimon\u201d-2, \u201cSaint Nicholas\u201d-2, \u201cSaint Savvas\u201d, \u201d Saint Paraskevi\u201d, \u201d Saints Anargyroi\u201d, \u201cPanormitis\u201d, \u201cTaxiarch\u201d. Also, the names of 14 societies are related with the ancient Greece: \u201cCleobulus\u201d, \u201cHippocrates\u201d, \u201cHomer\u201d, \u201cApollo\u201d, \u201cPoseidon\u201d-2, \u201cMercury\u201d, \u201cGnomagoras\u201d, \u201cEsperos\u201d, \u201cDiagoras\u201d, \u201cNireas\u201d, \u201cIalyssos\u201d, \u201cPorphyris\u201d, \u201cAegle\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>A century of action<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today most of the societies are inactive and a large portion of those that continue to exist are in New York and neighboring New Jersey. Among them, the Telian society \u201cProgress\u201d and the Koan society \u201cHippokrates\u201d have been active for over a century. In the same category belong the Nisyrian societies \u201cGnomagoras\u201d, \u201cThermiani\u201d and \u201cTheologos\u201d, which continued after their union and the creation of the \u201cNew York Nisyrian Association\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Projects on the islands<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All societies created community projects to help the islands financially. For example, we mention one of the smaller islands. The Telian society \u201cProgress\u201d was founded in 1910 in which all newly arrived immigrants became members and by 1914 they reached 192. The monthly dues for each member were two dollars, i.e. $24 a year which is equivalent to today\u2019s $2950 (in 1910 an ounce of gold worth $20.67, in 1934 rose to $35 and today has reached $2540). With the dues and other revenues, \u201cProgress\u201d allocated $9,900 (today $1,216,545) for the execution of community projects in Tilos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1920, the Lepsian society \u201cSaint John the Theologian\u201d was founded and in a short time collected $35,000 (today\u2019s $4,300,917), with which the magnificent church of Saint John the Theologian was built in Lepsi. The same thing happened with the societies of the other islands and villages, their total projects carried out, before and after WWII, amount to a current value of several tens of millions of dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u00abDodecanese Houses\u00bb<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today there are 12 \u201cDodecanese Houses\u201d in America: Eight in New York, and one each in New Jersey, Maryland, South Carolina and Florida worth millions of dollars, where the historical and cultural heritage of our islands in America is forged and preserved.
