has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Karpathian Personalities in America<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the thousands of Karpathians who lived in America, there were many who, as businessmen and scientists, contributed to the progress and upward trajectory of the Karpathian community. There were many others who, with their national, cultural, social and philanthropic contribution, had an even greater impact on the Karpathian community and left an indelible mark on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I got to know some of the pioneers firsthand and with many who followed I worked with them for many years. All these people had one thing in common: they were people who put the common good above their personal interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The personalities that follow are a representative sample of many people of character, ability and contribution. At some point a whole book should be written to include them all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Nick Matthew (1904-1983)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the headlines \u201cYorktown Mourns\u201d and \u201cHe Passed the Philanthropic Baton\u201d, the American press announced the death of Nick Matthew, a philanthropist and national benefactor of America. Matthew donated to America the battlefield of Yorktown, where American independence was decided. The area was turned into a national park, in which the state of Virginia built a magnificent museum. The Victory Center is a hymn to the struggle for American independence, one of America\u2019s most remarkable museums and a tribute to a Greek American philanthropist, born in Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1920, 16-year-old Nick Matthew set off from Karpathos for America, with only the wishes of his parents. His mother lit a candle in the church of Ypapanti in Arkasa and begged the Virgin Mary to illuminate and guide her child\u2019s steps on his long journey and the difficulties of life that awaited him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>America opened the door of sweat and bio wrestling to receive Nick Matthew. Hard work didn\u2019t scare him, as he used to tell me: \u201cI was never afraid of struggle and hard work, because here in America, they always lead you to success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first, he worked in coal mines and iron factories, then in restaurants. With his hard work, honesty, diligence and intelligence, he won the love and appreciation of his superiors and soon became head chef in the most famous restaurants in America. Over time, he began experimenting with foods of his own inspiration, which he recorded in a handwritten cookbook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The great depression found him as a rent collector in a New York apartment building. One day the landlord instructed him to \u201cthrow into the street\u201d on the snow, the furniture of a family who could not pay the rent. His philanthropic heart was wounded and rebelled. From his salary he paid the rent owed by the family and \u2013 despite the crisis in the labor market \u2013 he left his job as a debt collector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1943, Nick Matthew and his wife, on their way to Florida, stopped in Yorktown VA, where, fascinated by the natural environment, they decided to settle there and open a small restaurant. Over time, and thanks to the delicious food and excellent service provided, the restaurant grew to become the world-famous Nick\u2019s Seafood Pavilion with a capacity of 450 seats. Presidents, senators, congressmen, governors, ministers, generals and other celebrities from many states of America and countries of the world passed through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time and the restaurant\u2019s leaps and bounds, Matthew began to purchase large tracts of land, including the historic Yorktown battlefield. The motivation of his purchases was not profit, but his love for the natural environment of the town that welcomed him and gave him the opportunities to emerge as a rich and powerful businessman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, as 1976 approached and the Bicentenary fever gripped America, many hotel and other tourist businesses turned their attention to the property of Nick Matthew. But Matthew, who for no reason would accept the commercialization of a historical site, donated the battlefield to the state of Virginia. A museum of historical memory, the Victory Center, was built there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one knows all Nick Matthew\u2019s donations because they amount to hundreds and because he avoided talking about them. The most important ones were made for great national, social and cultural projects and the most out of love for fellow man. Once upon a time, the town of Yorktown found itself in the unfortunate position of being unable to pay its electric bill and the electric company would cut off the electric power and the historic town would be plunged into darkness. The political world was in turmoil. The major television channels came to Yorktown to capture the historic town plunged in darkness and found it sailing through the light. Nick Matthew had paid the cost of its electricity for a whole year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christopher University of Newport VA, in recognition of services to the American nation and society, awarded Nick Matthew a honorary doctorate. After the awarding of the diploma, joking, he used to correct anyone who called him Mister Matthew by saying, \u201cDoctor Matthew please\u201d. He once confided to me: \u201cWhen I was a student in Karpathos, the teacher left me behind in the second grade of primary school, now in my old age they made me a Doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The late Matthew was a simple man and felt immense love for his fellow man. He was intimate with presidents, kings, prime ministers, generals, ministers, governors, ambassadors and other dignitaries who passed through Nick\u2019s Seafood Pavilion, which he hosted for free. He was at the same time amenable to his compatriots and ordinary people, and no Karpathian or his friend passed by the restaurant and did not host him. In the restaurant there was a large table for 12 people, where he used to eat with his company. Whoever sat at that table never paid his bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this table, every evening after eleven when the restaurant closed, many of the staff, some passing Karpathians and their friends would gather for dinner. During these hours he liked to tell stories from his childhood and refer particularly to his father, Minas Matthew, who used to have a coffee shop in Finiki, and was a simple, pleasant and good-natured man, with the wisdom that distinguishes those who \u201cgraduate\u201d from the Great School of Nature and Life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These dinners lasted until the early hours of the morning and were accompanied \u2013 many times \u2013 by the Karpathian tunes played by Minas Papaminas on his lyre. And you could see, then, on the smiling face of Mathew, the shadow of nostalgia lingered, as his thoughts went back to his small village, and he became \u2013 again \u2013 the sixteen-year-old kid who took the path of adventure with a unique \u201cequipment\u201d the wish of his parents and his faith in the protection of Ypapanti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1983, when the cruiser \u201cYorktown\u201d was to be launched, among the dozens of prominent Americans proposed as sponsors of the ship, the Minister of Marine choose the Matthews. A military plane, used to transport officials, took them to Pascagoula MS for the christening of the cruiser. But on the way, Nick Matthew died of a heart attack. Despite her great grief, his wife named \u201cYorktown\u201d in her husband\u2019s memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same plane returned with the body of Nick Matthew to Yorktown, where his funeral took place, with honors given by the American government to personalities of national contribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the US National Gallery in Washington DC is a painting depicting US President George Washington and French General Marquis de Lafayette shaking hands on a hill in Yorktown. On this hill, next to the Victory Center, is the grave of Nick Matthew and his wife, the poor kid from Arkasa who became one of America\u2019s great national benefactors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important TV channels and more than 50 newspapers published laudatory comments about Matthew\u2019s personality emphasizing his charity work. His great contribution to his adopted country was appreciated by America and his name is mentioned in the official minutes of the American Congress. On April 27, 1983, in an official session, the American Congress paid tribute to the memory of Nick Matthew, with the speaker being congressman William Whitehurst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick Matthew did not forget his small homeland either: with his own expenses, the second floor of Karpathos Health Center was built and equipped, and he also was the largest donor of the fundraising held in America by Metropolitan Apostolos for the benevolent projects established in Saint George in Vasses.
