Instead of turning his interest to coal mining or other manual work, like most Karpathian immigrants, he preferred letters. He was one of the first Karpathians in America to study at a higher educational institution. He settled in Pittsburgh and studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1928, Alex Georgiadis together with other Karpathians founded KEPA, which he served continuously for 50 years in various positions and as Supreme President. During his many years of service, he showed a progressive spirit with new ideas, which came from his many years of experience and his clear thinking. He was the initiator and animator of the establishment of the KEPA Scholarship Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In Evros<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During WWII, Turkey supplied Germany with large quantities of bauxite, antimony and copper. As the war progressed, the number of countries from which Germany obtained these ores dwindled. In 1943, Turkey supplied 50% of Germany\u2019s bauxite needs. The Allies tried, by diplomatic means and pressure, to force Turkey to stop supplying Germany with war-enhancing ores but failed and they decided to apply more drastic means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/a268-Prominent4a-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/a268-Prominent4a-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-71283\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a3\u03c4\u03bf \u038c\u03b8\u03bf\u03c2 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u039a\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03ac\u03b8\u03bf\u03c5 \u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03ba\u03b5 \u03bf \u0391\u03bb\u03ad\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2 \u0393\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03b3\u03b9\u03ac\u03b4\u03b7\u03c2. Othos of Karpathos where Alex Georgiadis was born.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At this time Greek Thrace was under Bulgarian occupation, except for the area along the Evros River which was under German occupation. Also, in Thrace were more than 1000 Greek rebels who were fighting among themselves for political reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a secret way, the American OSS (Office of Strategic Services) sent to Piraeus second lieutenant Alex Georgiadis. In Nicoletou\u2019s cafe he met the link that was waiting for him. Through the rebel underground and with the connections that the Allies had, Georgiadis reached the Evros region where he established good relations with the rebels and convinced them to forget their differences and work together for the common national good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Allies, unable to persuade Turkey to change its policy, decided to blow up one of the bridges over which the railway carrying the ores passed. For this purpose, the OSS sent to Thrace the Greek American Captain James G.L. Kellis, with radio telegraph operators Spyridon Kapponie and Michael Angelos, who met Georgiadis and laid out their plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The original plan called for blowing up the Alexandroupolis bridge that crosses over the Evros and connects Turkey with Greece. But, in order not to worsen the relations of the Allies with Turkey, this option was rejected, and instead they chose the Svilengrad bridge located in Bulgaria. After the bridge was blown up, and with the help of the rebels, Georgiadis continued to serve in the OSS until the end of the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Returning to America, Georgiadis continued his society activity and with his participation in charitable organizations helped Greece to heal the wounds left by the war.
