Karpathian Personalities in America<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We continue with the Karpathian Personalities in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vasilis Kritsiotis (1895-1985)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vasilis St. Kritsiotis was born in Othos in 1895 and in 1914 immigrated to America. After a 20-day journey, on the ocean liner \u201cAthena\u201d, he arrived in New York and from there went to Ohio, where lived several Karpathians. He was a man who had immense love for his village and Karpathos and devoted a lot of time to the societies and the Karpathian community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1926 he took the initiative to hold a fundraising to finish the construction of the Primary school in Othos. Within two years the fundraising was completed and the project finished. In 1933, he undertook a new initiative and with the cooperation of other Othitans, the \u201cHomer\u201d Association of Othitans of America was founded. At the same time he worked on Pan-Karpathian issues, embracing the goals of KEPA and was one of its first members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1935, Vassilis Kritsiotis returned to Karpathos and authorized by \u201cHomer\u201d, undertook the work of moving the Othos Cemetery to its current location. In the same year, the mayor of the village resigned, and Vassilis Kritsiotis was elected in his place. In July 1936 he resigned as mayor because he was going to return to America. One day before he left, the whole village gathered in a cafe to say goodbye to him and to express, through beautiful \u201cmandinades\u201d, their sorrow for his departure. Upon his return to America, he assumed the presidency of \u201cHomer\u201d. In 1942, with the cooperation of other Karpathians from Logan, he founded KEPA\u2019s chapter \u201cDigenis\u201d. When, at the 1943 Convention, KEPA decided to hold a fundraising for the care of the orphans of Karpathos, the Convention appointed Vassilis Kritsiotis as president of the Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After concerted efforts the Committee raised more than $16,000 which eventually were allocated for the construction of Karpathos Health Center. The society activity of Vassilis Krisiotis continued even after the war and he continued to \u201cgive his presence\u201d to every activity of \u201cHomer\u201d and KEPA until his death, on December 7, 1985.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
