He studied medicine at the University of Athens and during the civil war he served in the Greek army as army surgeon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1956, immediately after his marriage to Eudoxia Mellisanou, he immigrated to America where he practiced medicine, first in Baltimore and then in South Somerville NJ. In 1977 he returned to Greece for permanent settlement and in May 1988 he came back to America for treatment, where, on June 29 he passed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elias Horatatzis was an excellent scientist and served medicine with self-sacrifice. He did not see the patient as a client, but as his brother. Many traveled tens of miles to heal, not only their physical but also their mental pain. He healed hundreds, perhaps even thousands of Karpathians, but never received a single dollar, as, infallibly, the popular Muse states (in free translation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In the foreign land, your door was always open,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And you heal freely, each one of us.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In your pocket could not get any Karpathian money,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You were a doctor as well as a human being, and that was a great honor.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The society activity of Elias Horatatzis was unique in the Karpathian annals and one of the richest in the Greek American community. In America he re-founded the society of Menediatians \u201cOctober 5, 1944\u201d and served as its president. He was a founding member and president of the Karpathian Federation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with other Dodecanese he re-established the Dodecanese Federation, which he served as president. He worked for the re-establishment of the National Dodecanese Council, which he served as president. He was chairman of several committees, such as the Dodecanese fundraising committee to elect the mayor of Hartford CN, George Athanson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before coming to America, he was a founding member and president of the Karpathian Youth of Athens-Piraeus and after his return to Greece he was elected president of the \u201cKarpathian World Association\u201d. He was a founding member and the first president of the Federation of Dodecanese Federation of Athens-Piraeus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was a lover of the Karpathian cultural tradition and wrote dozens, if not hundreds, of articles with historical and folkloric content about Karpathos, the Dodecanese and the communities abroad. He used the Karpathian dialect with ease and revived many folk types of Karpathos. He was the editor of the Bulletin \u201cMenetes\u2019 Postman\u201d and the historical album of the Menediatian society \u201c5th of October 1944\u201d. He was the chairman of the editorial committee of the album of the Karpathian Federation, \u201cKarpathian Heritage\u201d which was awarded by the Academy of Athens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elias Horatatzis loved Karpathos with a pathological love and worked tirelessly to solve its problems. Such was his love for our island, that he often cried when he mentioned it. As much as he loved Karpathos, he also loved the Karpathian community in America.
