There are several Karpathian mantinades that have survived through the centuries with a philosophical character that, with a fifteen-syllable couplet, tells an entire story. A unique feature of the Karpathian mantinades, not found in any other part of Greece, is the \u201cKarpathian mantinades are one time use\u201d. The book\u2019s prologue is written by the former rector of the University of Athens, Theodosis Pelegrinis, and the epilogue by the emeritus professor of the University of Athens, Minas Alexiadis. Also are included the reviews of 20 people of folklore and letters who became aware of the book\u2019s content before it was printed. Among them is His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When electricity arrived in a Karpathian village, a housewife bought a radio and started playing songs in the morning while she did her chores. Her mother, who was listening, commented: \u201cWell? These people have no work to do, and they sing every day since morning?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a non-Karpathian reads Frixos\u2019 book, he will get the impression that the Karpathians do nothing but sing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They begin with the birth of the newborn, his \u201cSeven days festivity\u201d, his first birthday and his baptism (in free translation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>To become a strong man, with confidence and strength,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>and in the struggles of life, always courageous.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They take them to the park with mantinades when they start walking, and with mantinades take them to kindergarten.
