Close to Tradition, Karpathian Carols in America<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first Karpathian immigrants, like the other Greeks, when they came to America, brought with them their cultural heritage, such as Christmas and New Year\u2019s carols. In those days, you would see newly arrived and American-born children visiting the homes of the neighborhood where the Karpathians lived to sing them the carols. Some children would also go to Stavros Diakomanolis\u2019s coffee shop in Canonsburg PA, to sing carols to the patrons of the coffee shop. The same thing happened in the Karpathian neighborhoods in Wheeling WV, New Castle PA and Logan WV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later in the 1930s and during WWII, carol singing was taken up by the Karpathian societies. The choir of each society visited the Karpathian houses and coffee shops to sing the carols. But at this time the theme of the carols, along with the festive wishes, was the struggles and wishes of the Dodecanese that the new year would bring the liberation of their islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since most Karpathians have since dispersed to the suburbs of the American cities, the societies have modified their program. The society\u2019s choir, with a minibus, visits Karpathian homes and businesses in a certain region on a designated day. The improvised carols, in addition to the established wishes, also include references to some of the churches in the society\u2019s village of origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason, this year \u201cPoseidon\u201d sang the carols in various regions of New Jersey on the weekends of December 7-8 and 14-15, those who live in faraway areas were mailed a copy of the carols and mailed their contributions. As planned, the proceeds from the carols, along with the Association\u2019s offer from its treasury, will be allocated for the works carried out at the church of Vangelistra in Pigadia.
