To fill the gaps, it recruited 16-year-olds and 60-year-olds, and eventually released criminal and political convicts, in exchange for their enlistment in the army. Because these people \u2013 mainly criminals \u2013 were not models of morality, the German army did not integrate them into existing units, not wanting to tarnish the history of any of them, but created the 999th Regiment, which later developed into a division. The officers and non-commissioned officers were experienced combatants and came from the regular army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the occupation of Crete by the Germans, some of the battalions of the 999th were transferred to Crete as garrison battalions. One of them, the 999-VI, landed on Karpathos on September 6<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;1943 and occupied the island from the Italians. The following are portraits of two German officers of different characters, who served on Karpathos with the 999-VI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Hans Vogeler<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hans Vogeler was born on June 17, 1917, in Cuxhaven, east of Hamburg. After finishing high school, he was sent to a forced labor camp for six months and two years of military training. He was drafted on September 30, 1939, and in January 1940 he was commissioned as a second lieutenant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 1940 he participated in the German attack on France and after its surrender his unit took up position on the French coast opposite England in case the decision was made to invade England. Stolzmann was trying to neutralize the spies Lito (left) and Krasopoulos (his photo, years later).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 1, 1941, his unit was transferred to the Russian border, from where it attacked Russia towards Leningrad on June 22. After an advance of 600 kilometers, he was seriously wounded and sent to a hospital in Germany, where he saw his newborn son Volker for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After his recovery, Vogeler was called to active duty, to participate with an air-transfer division to capture the Suez Canal, as soon as Rommel reached Alexandria. After the failure of the Suez operation, the same division was intended for the capture of Malta, but that too was cancelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October 1942 Vogeler was sent to Crete where, on 1 January 1943, he was promoted to first lieutenant. In Crete, he served in Kozari, Mizourania and Ierapetra and on 15 August he arrived in Embaros, Heraklion, where he saved six Cretans from the firing squad and as punishment for disobeying an order, he was detached to the eastern front. However, due to the situation in the Dodecanese, he was sent by air to Rhodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few days after Christmas 1943, Vogeler set off from Rhodes on the Laurana boat for Karpathos. But, as soon as he arrived in Halki, a storm started and was forced to stay for a week. Pleased with the care of the Halkians, he asked them how he could help them, and they asked him to open the Greek schools, which he did despite the Italians\u2019 reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/a279-GermansN-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/a279-GermansN-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72539\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03b4\u03c5\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae \u03c0\u03bb\u03b5\u03c5\u03c1\u03ac \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03b5\u03ba\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03af\u03b1\u03c2 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u0391\u03b3\u03af\u03b1\u03c2 \u0391\u03b3\u03ba\u03ac\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2 \u03ae\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd \u03b8\u03b1\u03bc\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9 \u03b4\u03cd\u03bf \u0393\u03b5\u03c1\u03bc\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03af. Two Germans were buried on the west side of the church of Saint Ankara.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 6, 1944, Vogeler arrived in Karpathos and took over the command of the section commanded by Lieutenant Stolzmann, which started from Ammopi, covered the hill of Saint Sunday, Pigadia and reached Othos. Also, in addition to his military duties, he assumed the duties of a political mediator between the Germans and the Karpathians. When the incident of Halki became known from Karpathian sailors serving on the Laurana, the teacher and secretary of the Metropolis Christophoros Sakellaridis approached Vogeler and asked him to open the Greek schools. Vogeler granted his request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the former political prisoners, there were several with artistic qualifications that Vogeler utilized, creating a troupe and orchestra, aiming to entertain the Germans and to create good relations with the Karpathians, for whom the troupe gave performances. Also, in the current building of the Lyceum in Aperi, the orchestra organized musical events in which Karpathian instrumentalists participated with local musical instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vogeler also offered medical services to Karpathians injured by dynamite and allied bombing. Many years later, on 15\/10\/1969, Markos Zaraftis, who was injured in Vronti by dynamite, wrote to him:&nbsp;<em>\u201cI am Markos, who at my wedding in Karpathos sang the Greek National Anthem, I am the fisherman who was seriously injured, and you ran quickly, my savior. I can\u2019t go on any longer, because my tears are flowing as I remember it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/a279-GermansP-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/a279-GermansP-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72540\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03b4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03b7 \u03c3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac \u03b7 \u03b5\u03c0\u03b9\u03c4\u03cd\u03bc\u03b2\u03b9\u03b1 \u03c0\u03bb\u03ac\u03ba\u03b1 \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1 \u03c4\u03bf\u03bd Alfred Eickworth. In the second row is the tombstone for Alfred Eickworth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On August 31, 1944, the Germans, wanting to save forces for the defense of Germany, decided to abandon the Aegean and mainland Greece. The withdrawal from Karpathos envisaged four missions to Rhodes and from there, if the means were available, by air to Germany. The first mission began a few days later and the last on October 4 under Vogeler. Despite the order he had received, Vogeler, when leaving Karpathos, did not blow up the port of Pigadia. He went through a military court, where he cited technical problems. After a short procedure, the military court acquitted him, influenced by the difficult mission he had carried out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October 1944, the Allies occupied Tilos and because the first attempt to retake the island under Lieutenant Jenninger failed, General Wagener, on October 28, sent Vogeler who carried out the mission. In the meantime, Jenninger, to justify his failure, reported that local Tilians helped the Allies, because of which Vogeler received an order to capture 30 hostages and execute them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because Vogeler had to obey, he filed a report against the order for execution and sent it to Rhodes along with 21 hostages. He ordered the sergeant who accompanied them to hand them over to the military court along with the report. The hostages were released and returned to Tilos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On November 30, 1944, after the return of Tilos to German occupation, Vogeler returned to Rhodes, was promoted to captain, took command of a battalion and was awarded the \u201cIron Cross\u201d. In May 1945, after the surrender of the Germans of Rhodes, he was captured by the British and sent to a prisoner of war camp in Egypt, from where he was discharged and returned to Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/a279-GermansQ-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/a279-GermansQ-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72541\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03b4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03b7 \u03c3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac \u03c4\u03bf \u03cc\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 Alfred Eickworth \u03c0\u03bf\u03c5 \u03b2\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03ba\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c7\u03c9\u03c1\u03b7\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03bf \u03c4\u03c9\u03bd \u03b5\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c6\u03b9\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd. In the second row, the name of Alfred Eickworth is listed in the list of those buried.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1969 Vogeler decided to visit Greece in the places where he served, and before making his trip he announced his intention to the mayors of Embaros-Crete (Konstantinos Margaritakis), Karpathos (Christophoros Sakellaridis) and Malona-Rhodes. They all expressed their joy and promised him the traditional Greek hospitality. Among other things, Margaritakis wrote to him:&nbsp;<em>\u201cMany of our fellow villagers remember you and certainly will not forget your good behavior\u201d.<\/em>&nbsp;Sakellaridis wrote to him:&nbsp;<em>\u201cYou demonstrated your humanity when leaving our island, you did not blow up the port and the telegraph office and a great disaster was avoided\u201d.<\/em>&nbsp;Since then, he has visited Greece, and especially Karpathos, more than 30 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I first contacted Vogeler in May 1985 and asked him to answer several questions about the German occupation of Karpathos in the form of an interview. He responded immediately and the interview was published in \u201cPoseidon\u2019s\u201d album (in Greek) and in Karpathos magazine (in English). From then until the day of his death (1996) we exchanged more than 100 letters on issues related to the German occupation of Karpathos. Among other things, he sent me several photographs and documents from the time and all his correspondence with Greeks. All of this, together with my personal archive, is in the archives of the New York City University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1992 I invited Vogeler, and he came to America where he stayed for two weeks. During his stay he attended various gatherings and met the Karpathian and Dodecanese community where he was warmly welcomed. Particularly moving was the meeting that took place at the luncheon offered in his honor by Elias Romaios at his home in Astoria, New York. It was moving to see the two former adversaries in the Battle of Tilos fall into each other\u2019s arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Stolzmann<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stolzmann, like Vogeler, immediately after graduating from high school, went to the centers of compulsory labor and military training. He was then drafted and awarded the rank of second lieutenant. He took part in several war fronts and in September 1943 he was in the prefecture of Heraklion, Crete, with the rank of first lieutenant. From there he set off with the 999-VI battalion for Karpathos on September 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Italians surrender Karpathos, Stolzmann assumed command of the eastern part of Karpathos, which extended from Amoopi to Othos and centered in Pigadia. He was responsible for the concentration of the Italian prisoners in concentration camps and their shipment to Crete, with a destination in Germany. His attempt to capture the Italian escapees and return them to the camps within the prescribed time limit resulted in the execution of Private Alessandro Orofino by the Germans and Lieutenant Alberto Patruno by the spies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On October 20, 1943, after the bombing of Pigadia by Allied planes, Stolzmann ordered the evacuation of Pigadia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kalliopi Karakatsani and her sons John and Manolis moved to Volada. John recounts:&nbsp;<em>\u201cOne day we got permission and with my mother we went to Pigadia to get some things from our house. We found the doors closed and the locks sealed with sealing wax. We went to Stolzmann who had his office in the house of George Alexiadis (former Italian Dopolavoro) and we asked him to let us open our house to get some things we needed. He not only did not allow us to get to our house, but he told us that he should had blown it up because inside the house he found documents that revealed that my father served in France in WWII with the American army against Germany.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his report, Colonel Francesco Imbriani (\u201cArchivio dell\u2019 Ufficio Storico dello Stato maggiore dell\u2019 Esercito \u2013 Roma\u201d), calls Stolzmann a great thief. He entered the houses that had been abandoned by the Pigadiotans and took whatever he wanted. He then states:&nbsp;<em>\u201cSuddenly the Administration building, where I was staying as a political Commander, was surrounded by armed soldiers and I was forced to flee. The next day two trucks appeared at the Administration building and robbed furniture, carpets, crockery, etc., which were distributed among the German officers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOn February 9, 1944, at ten o\u2019clock in the evening, Stolzmann came and informed me that at 5 in the morning I would be leaving by plane. I gave him everything I had except my valuables (1 gold chronometer, 1 camera, 1 gold wedding ring with diamonds, and financial securities worth 300,000 lire). I pointed out to him that what was happening was illegal, because he could not confiscate personal belongings. He replied that they were war booty.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Italians surrender Karpathos to the Germans, Second Lieutenant Michele Memola did not surrender and on September 21, 1943 he fled to Mesohori, where the Mesohoritans hid and supported him at the risk of their lives. But, after five months of being hunted by Stoltzman, he surrender to the Italian station-marshal of Mesohori, Brigadiere Antonio Micali, who, as he was obliged to do, on February 21, 1944, handed him over to Stoltzman. Stoltzman confined Memola in the upper floor of Nikolas Diakonis house in Menetes and tried to obtain information about the Mesohoritans who supported him with scopolamine injections and torture. He left him hungry for days, forcing him to scrape the floor to satisfy his hunger with wood shavings. Finally, on May 17, he sent him to Rhodes and from there to Germany, where he was liberated by the Allies and returned home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the German plane crashed on Agnondia beach on October 9, 1943, Stoltzman took over the investigation of the case and through brief \u201ccourt martial\u201d procedures, Emmanuel Kon. Piperis of Zahara, Pachos Vas. N. Piperis and Emmanuel G. Sisamis were convicted and executed on the charge of \u201cdisrespecting the body of the deceased and removing his personal belongings and parts of the plane\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the action of the Allied air force and navy against the Germans, it was obvious that a spy cell was operating in Karpathos. Thus, after Vogeler\u2019s arrival in Karpathos in January 1944, Stoltzman moved to Menetes and took on the task of discovering and subduing the spy cell from Christoforos Litos and John Krasopoulos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Imbriani reports, he informed Giannakas, through the chain Imbriani-Penna-Diakides-Sakellaridis-Giannakas, that a counterintelligence team would be coming from Thessaloniki and that Stolzmann with a platoon would go to investigate the area around Mesohori to locate and arrest the spies. Giannakas informed the spies, who for greater security moved to Apella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Krasopoulos and Captain L. Stephen report, on March 20, 48 Germans under Stolzmann, who was known by the nickname \u201cJerry\u201d, conducted a search of the surrounding area. The spies were surrounded for a long time, they lacked everything, even water. Once the Germans passed within 6-7 meters, but fortunately they were not discovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, according to reports by Krasopoulos and Second Lieutenant Emm. Berdalis and following actions by Stolzmann, the Germans brought an electronic wireless telegraph detection device (RDF), which they placed between Volada and Othos. In addition, they brought a counterspy, who pretended to be a journalist and spied on Sakellaridis and Giannakas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Years later, Father Konstantinos Halkias, referring to Stolzmann, published in the Karpathian press that Stolzmann was a spy for the Allies and that when he was discovered by the Germans he was shot in Rhodes. To verify the reality, we submitted a relevant question to Vogeler from whom we received the following answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cassotis:&nbsp;<em>There is a rumor that the German officer Stolzmann was a spy for the British. Later, when the Germans discovered it, he was executed in Rhodes. Is it true?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vogeler:&nbsp;<em>The rumor is just a rumor, and a bad rumor, because Stolzmann was a brave and honest German officer. At the beginning of September 1944, the evacuation of Rhodes was carried out by planes, which were headed for Athens, Thessaloniki and Belgrade. Stolzmann had been seen boarding one of these planes, which was lost on the way. At that time, many planes were being bombed and lost at sea. When I arrived at the port of Lindos on the morning of October 5, 1944, a fellow officer gave me this information.
