George Manolios (1929-2000)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without lyres, lutes and violins, but with the sad sound of the bell of Panagia Plagia, the whole village went to \u201cwelcome\u201d George Manolios. Lastos (the tallest mountain of Karpathos) rose to greet him, Volada\u2019s bridge widen for him to get into his village for the last time, and the earth of Karpathos opened its arms for George Manolios to rest in its hallowed soil, next to the grave of his wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>George Manolios was born in 1929 and raised in Volada and immigrated to America at a young age in 1946. He studied engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of Pittsburgh and for several years worked for various technical companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later he indulged in engineering projects and restaurants with great success. He served the \u201cSaints Anargyri\u201d society in various positions and as president and in KEPA at the Supreme Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early he joined the ranks of the Karpathian Federation and was elected president four times for two years terms, and as president he died in 2000. From the beginning, he embraced the idea of \u200b\u200bthe Pan-Karpathian Foundation, was a founding member, served on the Board of Directors and raised tens of thousands of dollars for the \u201cKarpathian House\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The presence of George Manolios in the Dodecanese community was valuable. The president of the Karpathian Federation, John Sakellaris, awards an honorary plaque to Manolios couple.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>George Manolios was the chairman of the Karpathian committee for the re-election of the mayor of Hartford, George Athanson, and when Michalis Dukakis ran for president of America, George Manolios was one of the first Greek Americans to support him and he was the chairman of the Greek American committee of New Jersey, which raised over $1,000,000 for the election campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several years later I went to Hofstra University to attend a lecture given by Michalis Dukakis, and when the lecture was over, I approached him and mentioned that I had been a member of the New Jersey committee.
