Minas Papakostas (1920-2011)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On an autumn day in 1926, a poor six-year-old boy, sent by his mother to \u201clearn letters\u201d, presented himself at his village school. The teacher did not accept him, because at that time the schools were communal and supported by the fees paid by the parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This kid didn\u2019t get university degrees, didn\u2019t become the mayor of his village or the president of a Karpathian society. But the patriotism that his parents instilled in him became higher than Lastos (Karpathos higher mountain), the generosity that nestled in his soul became wider than the Karpathian sea and the philanthropic feelings that flooded his heart became cooler than the water of Saint Panteleimon spring in Stes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minas Nicholas Papakostas was born in America, but at a very young age he, with his mother, went to Karpathos. From a young age he entered bio wrestling and worked as a laborer in the fields, in the vineyards and in the projects of the Italians in Karpathos: opening roads and in the construction of the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He returned to America in 1946 and engaged in various tasks. Laster and for many years, until 2007 when he returned to Karpathos, he drove a taxi in Washington DC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the taxi he earned enough money, but for himself he spent only on the most necessary, the rest went to donations. The Karpathian society KEPA, the Karpathian Federation, the Pan-Karpathian Foundation, Saint Anargyri, Saint Panteleimon, Holy Cross, the magazine Karpathos, the Committee \u201cJustice for Cyprus\u201d and other organizations, which his modesty did not allow us to know, benefited from the generosity of Minas Papakostas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Karpathos, the fruits of his charity were tasted by schools, churches, charitable organizations and many suffering compatriots. He helped his village school the most \u2013 the one that closed its door to him \u2013 because he did not want another child to be deprived of the benefit of education, which he did not enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minas Papakostas did not marry but took care of his family and relatives. He took care of his ninety-year-old father, better than a daughter. Because he couldn\u2019t leave him alone, he took him with him to work, in the taxi. The father sat next to the driver and the customers in the back seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1988 the Karpathian Federation honored Minas Papakostas for his philanthropy by awarding him an honorary plaque and a relevant diploma. Also in 2008, the National Dodecanese Council of America, in a special event held in Karpathos, honored Minas Papakostas for his national and philanthropic contribution.
