The Dodecanese in their Mother\u2019s arms, through the eyes of a child<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the Minoan, Mycenaean, Classical, Hellenistic and Byzantine eras, 12 sailing ships traveled with auspicious winds in the southeastern Aegean. Then, during the Frankish and Turkish occupations, storms and hurricanes followed that continued during the Italian occupation and WWII. However, when the weather calmed, the sailing ships took refuge in a leeward harbor, in the arms of their mother, who at that time was torn apart by civil war. Inside one of the sailing ships, \u201cKarpathos\u201d, was an 11-year-old child who remembers and describes how he experienced the welcome and the embrace of the grieving mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 31, 1947, exactly noon, the British military commander of Karpathos, Captain Pam Pay, handed over Karpathos to the Greek Lieutenant Panagiotis Psomopoulos. The ceremony took place in the Administration Building square, where over two thousand people from all the villages had gathered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Girls in local costumes shower with rose petals the English flag as was lowered for the last time. The raising of the Greek flag is accompanied by the Greek National Anthem from two thousand mouths and, while the flag is raised, the same girls shower it with more rose petals. As soon as the flag reaches the flagpole of the Governor\u2019s Building, the people burst into applause. After six centuries, the \u201cGreat Day\u201d has arrived. The old priest Nikolas Sakellaridis from Menetes kneels and prays (in free translation): \u201cThank you my God that you have made me worthy to see this day. Now You can dismiss your servant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

The following day, April 1, 1947, the transport ship \u201cChios\u201d with the grenadiers and public employees destined for Karpathos arrived in Pigadia. The Karpathian MP from Piraeus, Pericles Chrysocheris, was on board. Many people went to the port to welcome them. Marigoula Antimisiari, dressed in blue and white, represents Greece, and 12 young women in local costumes the Dodecanese islands. When Marigoula begins to sing \u201cOh my orphaned children, scattered here and there\u2026\u201d, the girls surrounded her, and all danced the \u201cFreedom Dance\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a short time, Lieutenant Panagiotis Psomopoulos served as military commander, as did grenadiers\u2019 captain Konstantine Petsalas, who was replaced by Colonel Konstantine Kyriazanos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grenadiers\u2019 captain Stagias took over as Grenadier Commander, who was succeeded by Grenadiers\u2019 captain Dimitriadis, whose office was located on the west side of the first floor of the Administration Building. The Grenadiers manned the police stations in Pigadia, Aperi, Finiki, Mesochori and Olympos. Pigadia\u2019s station was in the Italian Police building, on the west side of the Administration square, and was managed by a warrant officer who had his office on the second floor, where the Italian Maresciallo had his. On the same floor was the wireless telegraph that communicated with Rhodes.<\/p>\n\n\n

Immediately afterwards, civil servants began to arrive. Tsakmakis took over as Justice of the Peace, who organized the Justice of the Peace administration in the same place where the Italian court was, on the east side of the Administration Building Square. Spyropoulos took over as Agricultural Commissioner, who appointed local agricultural guards and tried agricultural violations in the Justice of the Peace courtroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maloukos was appointed forester, who had his office at the former Italian refrigerator building in Ryaki. At this time, 50% of Karpathos was covered by forests and was considered the most forested Greek island. The forests started from Vronti in Pigadia, Stavri and Hohlakia in Aperi, and just outside Volada, Othos and Pyles and reached as far as Olympus. Even in southern Karpathos were isolated forests, such as on the Patella peninsula. During the Italian occupation there were two forest guard buildings in Mertona and Messathes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agronomist Slitas had his office in Pigadia, but often visited the villages to advised the farmers. He came to an agreement with the owner of a large olive grove in Pigadia. He, at state expense, took over pruning and caring for the olive trees, as an example to other olive growers. The owner of the grove collected the olives.<\/p>\n\n\n

Director of the Public Treasury was George Adamantidis, who had his office on the west side of the ground floor of the Administration Building. Port master was appointed Pantelakis, who was succeeded by Iliopoulos, and the Customs Officer was Gardaikos, who also sang in Vagelistra. In addition to the Customs Office in Pigadia, there was a sub-customs office in Diafani, with one employee. Post Office master remained Logothetis Diakides, a position he held during the British administration, at the preexisting Italian post office on the east side of the Administration Building square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the remaining civil service auxiliary positions, local Karpathians were hired. Within a short period, all public services were working exemplarily. It is worth noting that all the employees were a model of morals and behavior. Although Greece was in the throes of civil war, they avoided discasing politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the schools, there was no need to bring teachers, they continued to operate with the Karpathian teachers who taught during the British Administration and hired as Greek civil servants. There was a shortage of textbooks, which was somehow solved by used books, donated by students from Athens and Piraeus. In every village was a primary school and in Aperi a semi-gymnasium, which over time evolved into a full gymnasium.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Greek Administration was interested in the medical care and on January 15, 1948, it established a Health Station in Pigadia, with the doctor George Georgiou and later Andreas Lambros. Also, a health team with two doctors and three nurses came to Karpathos and vaccinated the school children. Due to the hardships of the war and malnutrition, many children suffered from tuberculosis and other diseases that plagued Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Greek Administration continued to distribute food with ration, which consisted of nine kilograms of flour per person per month, at an affordable price. To protect children from malnutrition, every morning was provided to all school children a hot drink of milk with cocoa, raisin bread and a vitamin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, the Greek Administration subsidized the passenger ship \u201cChalkidiki\u201d to service the unprofitable Dodecanese route ship line. Every two weeks it started from Piraeus, reached all the Dodecanese islands and took four days to get to Kasos and return to Piraeus. It was the only passenger ship that could duck at the old Italian pier in Pigadia. After two trips, it was replaced by the freighter ship \u201cHeraklion\u201d, and two months later by the passenger ship \u201cIlliopolis\u201d. Later the route became weekly. In addition to passengers, the ship brought mail, with parcels from America, newspapers and magazines, the only communication with the outside world.<\/p>\n\n\n

At the same time, a group of boy scouts was founded by Nick Nikolaidis, providing preoccupation for the youth through participation in national and religious events and ceremonies. Also, the Greek Women\u2019s Lyceum of Karpathos was founded with the aim of reviving and preserving the local cultural heritage and tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 1948, a terrible earthquake shook Karpathos causing great damage especially in Pyles, with a tsunami that followed. The Ministry of Reconstruction undertook rebuilding some houses and provided building materials to help rebuild the remaining destroyed houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the summer of 1948, a squad of Greek soldiers took the task of clearing the minefields left over from WWII. The British brought German prisoners from Rhodes who cleared the German minefields. But there were still some Italian minefields that the Indian soldiers who came with the British did not have time to clear all of them.<\/p>\n\n\n

With the takeover of the post offices, the Postal Service replaced the British stamps circulating with Greek and issued a series of stamps with the theme of the Dodecanese that circulated throughout Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the British administration in Dodecanese, the Italian lira was used as paper currency in transactions and at the same time English paper pounds and American dollars were in circulation. The British gold pound was equivalent to 1000 lire, the British Military Administration paper pound 400 and the dollar 100. The pound was divided into 20 shillings and the shilling into 12 pence. At this time, the daily wage of a worker was 50 lire. After a while, the Bank of Greece exchanged the Italian lire for 20 drachmas each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official incorporation of the Dodecanese into Greece took place on March 7, 1948, with the visit of King Paul to Rhodes. Since then, March 7 has been declared the National Dodecanese Holiday and from that day the Military Administration ended and the Dodecanese constitutes the civil \u201cGeneral Administration of the Dodecanese\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n

Nicholas G. Mavris was appointed General Civil Governor of the Dodecanese. On May 5th he was sworn in Athens and on the 15th of the same month he arrived in Rhodes and took up his duties. A few days later, the prefects of the four provinces into which the Dodecanese was divided (Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos, Karpathos) were appointed. Lambros Zacharopoulos took over as Prefect of Karpathos. In July, Nikolaos G. Mavris visited Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On October 14, 1948, with the destroyer \u201cAstigx\u201d, the King of Greece Paul and Queen Fredericka visited Karpathos, accompanied by political and military dignitaries. Among them was Marshal General Alexander Papagos. They were welcomed at the port by the Metropolitan of Rhodes Timotheos, the Governor of the Dodecanese Nicholas Mavris and other officials. Half the population of Karpathos gathered in Pigadia, with high school students, boy scouts and young women from the Greek Lyceum of Karpathos dressed in local costumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The king and queen and their entourage went on foot to the church of the Annunciation, where a doxology was performed. From the church, the royal retinue went to the Administration square, where a platform covered with carpets had been set up. The road from the port to the Administration square was paved with myrtles. In front of the royal couple, the schools, the sea scouts and the associations of the island paraded. On the same day, an honorary dinner was given and that same evening the royal couple departed, continuing their tour of the other islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here end the memories of the 11-year-old child, as he kept them in his memory for the future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n
