\u201cPoseidon\u201d of Karpathos continue its activities for 80 years<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

WWII had just ended in Europe with the great destruction it left behind and the first letters that came from Karpathos reported the effects the war had on Pigadia, whose port had become a target of military operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, on June 10, 1945, at the Aldine Restaurant in Brooklyn, following an invitation from Kyriakos Karaxis, Manolis Lambros and John Drakomanolis, the Pigadiotans of America met to solve the urgent problems facing Pigadia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the same day, a Committee was created that in the following years evolved into the \u201cPoseidon Benevolent Society of Karpathos\u201d, with the aim of supporting charitable projects in their place of origin and preserving their cultural identity in America. \u201cPoseidon\u2019s\u201d contributions, as well as those of the Pigadiotans in America, amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars in projects related to churches, schools, sports and other charitable purposes and continue to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n

The two weekends leading up to Christmas, \u201cPoseidon\u2019s\u201d choir visited the homes and businesses of its members and sang carols to help with the renovation of the church of Evangelista. Also on Sunday January 5, more than two hundred \u201cPoseidon\u2019s\u201d members and friends attended and enjoyed the celebration of Vasilopitas and the arrival of the new year, at Galloping Hills Catering in Union NJ, with traditional dances and songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, on Sunday, January 26, the General Assembly convened, and the Vasilopita was cut. Several members brought and offered traditional sweets and other delicacies. The Vasilopita\u2019s coin fell to siblings Minas and Kalliopi Micros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the meeting that followed, it was decided, among other things, that the $8,000 raised by the carols would be supplemented by \u201cPoseidon\u2019s\u201d treasury and $10,000 would be sent for the renovation of the church of Evangelista.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among others, the event was attended by two of the historical soccer players of Poseidon Karpathos soccer team, George Niotis and John Cassotis, who were given the opportunity to reminisce about the past. George was known by the nickname of the international Brazilian footballer Zarzino and John as AEK\u2019s defender Stefanos Demiris.<\/p>\n\n\n
