The 1948 earthquake in Karpathos<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earthquakes that are occurring around Santorini these days bring to our memory the earthquake of February 9, 1948, which shook Karpathos 77 years ago and remained in the memory and tradition of Karpathos, like the earthquakes of 1850 and 1925.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was Monday around 2 pm, we had finished school and after lunch, together with my siblings, we were doing our homework. Suddenly, we heard our mother shout to us: Earthquake!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We ran out of the house, into the yard, crossed the road that passed in front of our house, and reached the middle of a plot when the earthquake ended. This whole process lasted about 10 seconds, which seemed like an eternity to us. Later, as announced by the Athens Observatory, we learned that the earthquake was 7.1 on the Richter scale and occurred in the sea area southeast of Karpathos, at one of the points where the Teutonic plate of Africa collides with the European Teutonic plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My father arrived shortly after, he was happy to find us all alive but our five-year-old brother John was missing, we all ran to find him. We finally found him sitting with a boy of the same age on a wall on the eastern side of the Administration Building. (During the British administration, they had walled off and built a playground in the area between the Administration Building and the Post office at the time for Simon, the son of the British Commander of Karpathos, Captain Pam Pay, to play). We found him carefree, and when we asked him what they were doing, he told us that they were watching the plenty of water that it was flowing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 10 minutes after the earthquake, the tsunami came. At first, the sea receded, the surface dropped about two meters and in the exposed area you could see some small fish jumping. A little later, the sea returned, more violent, and rose about two meters onto the beach. A two-meter-high rock that once existed on the beach near Glyfa was covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the harbor, the sea rises about one meter above the pier, and as it rises, it also carries away the five-ton boat \u201cSaint Haralambos\u201d, of Michael Hadjiefstathiou, and leaves it on the pier. When the coastal wave returned, a navy petty officer from the Port Authority, defying the dangers, pushed the \u201cSaint Haralambos\u201d and brought it back to sea. Later, this petty officer was honored with an honorary diploma by the Port Authority at a special ceremony held in Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pressure from the sea, which had risen one meter above the pier, broke the doors and flooded the ground floors of the shops and houses located around the harbor, causing devastation. A little further on, through the bridge under the Fountain, the sea entered and proceeded through the stream without rising to the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same thing happened with the other dry streams that exist in the Gulf of Pigadia from Afoti to Vrontis, where the power plant is located today. In the stream of Afoti, the sea reached under the bridge of the same name. There, after the sea receded, the young Minas Mikropandremenos went and found and caught two or three small fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from the damage to shops and houses in the port, and the furnace of Eudoxia Protopapas near Konaki that collapsed, there was no other serious damage in Pigadia. More houses fell and destroyed in the other villages, especially in Pyles. For the temporary housing of the earthquake victims, scouts came from Rhodes and set up tents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first night the people spent in the open air. Since they had nothing else to do, they set up a dance party in Niochori. So, singing and dancing, they spent the night. However, due to the cold weather, in the following days and although the aftershocks continued, they slowly began to return to their homes. After a week, the big aftershock came, and the situation calmed down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As time passed, verbal information began to increase, resembling bank accounts with compound interest every year. The ten seconds that the earthquake lasted, reached three minutes. The two meters that the sea went down, it reached the bottom of Despotiko Island. The two meters that the sea rose reached 20 meters and advanced much farther in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two or three fish that Minas Mikropandremenos found and caught multiplied a thousandfold and even appeared on the olive trees. A high school student from another village who lived in Volada at the time of the earthquake, and later as a scholar wrote in an article about the earthquake: \u201c\u2026 we went down from Volada and through the bushes I collected and filled a sack with fish\u2026\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
