Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concluding the Karpathian Personalities in America, we present the portrait of another Dodecanese, one of the most notable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manolis Athanasiadis (1907-2001)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>There are men each worth one drachma, and two for a franc,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>but there are some that each worth a castle.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(traditional verse in free translation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, Manolis Athanasiadis was a \u201ccastle\u201d of the Hellenism in America, a castle of patriotism, who fought for Greece and fought for the liberation of the Dodecanese. For 27 years I knew this castle intimately, walked its towers, bastions, ramparts and battlements and felt its passion for the Dodecanese and the national fever that burned inside him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All these years, I felt the National pulse beating in his chest and learned a lot next to this great teacher. From Manolis Athanasiadis I got to know and love the struggles of the Dodecanese of America for the liberation and integration of the Dodecanese in Greece, which he saved and preserved in his book \u201cthe Dodecanese Youth of America and its Contribution to the Liberation of the Dodecanese\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manolis Athanasiadis was born in 1907 in Gennadi, Rhodes. In 1925 he graduated from the Venetokleio Gymnasium and studied for one year at the University of Athens. The following year he immigrated to America, where for a whole decade he worked hard in restaurants while, at the same time, studying. He graduated with honors from American International College (BA), Worchester Polytechnic Institute (BS), Trinity College (MA) and Columbia University (PhD). In 1936 he was appointed professor of Modern Greek at Columbia University, where he taught until 1954.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manolis Athanasiadis was not only an excellent scientist and a good person, but also a warm patriot, as he used to say: \u201cI was born a Turk, I grew up as an Italian, I grew old as an American, but I will die as a Greek\u201d. The first two citizenships were imposed on him, the American he chose himself. He loved America because it gave him the opportunity to progress in his life, and even more because it gave him the resources and possibilities to help Greece and fight for the Dodecanese. From 1930-1978 he edited the Bulletin of the Society and from 1978 to 1993 edited the magazine \u201cRhodes\u201d, which replaced the Bulletin. \u201cApollo\u201d, with the initiative and tireless efforts of Manolis Athanasiadis, was the first Greek American association, which in 1960 organized a convention in Greece (Rhodes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1934, Manolis Athanasiadis began a journalistic campaign, through the \u201cNational Herald\u201d and \u201cAtlantis\u201d, about the Dodecanese problem and on March 29 of the same year, together with 12 other Dodecanese, founded the Dodecanese Youth of America (DYA). He was its first president and for a decade the editor of the DYA\u2019s monthly newspaper \u201cDodecanisios\u201d. He decisively contributed to the creation of the National Dodecanese Council of America (NDCA) and was the closest collaborator of Nicholas Mavris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From August 10, 1942 until the end of the war, through NDCA, he worked closely with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). From June 13, 1942, through the BBC in London, he broadcast at frequent intervals texts, announcements and comments of the NDCA regarding the activities of the Dodecanese as well as messages of support and hope in the occupied Dodecanese. At the same time, as a professor at Columbia University, he taught the Greek language to 150 American officers who, during the war, served in the Dodecanese and the rest of Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manolis Athanasiadis, and his collaborators collected geographical, political and military information about the Dodecanese, from Dodecanese who had recently came to America and from anti-fascist Italians, who served in the Dodecanese and immigrated to America. This information was used by America for military operations and the formulation of its foreign policy. Several prominent federal congressmen and senators spoke in favor of the Dodecanese and the American House and Senate called for the Union of the Dodecanese with Greece. Through the American press, several anti-fascist academics and religious leaders of all denominations, with fiery articles and letters, advocated in favor of the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the war, Manolis Athanasiadis took over the direction of the Greek program of the Voice of America under the literary pseudonym Manos Rodios. He was well into his 80s and continued to work for the State Department, while also devoting much time to National and Greek American issues. He was tireless. Before one subject was finished another would arise. Many times, when I asked him what he does, he would tell me (in free translation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI am like the snow on the mountains,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>before the old melts, the new one arrives.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1974, after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the threats to the Aegean and the Dodecanese, Manolis Athanasiadis deemed it necessary and took the initiative to re-establish the \u201cNational Dodecanese Council of America\u201d. That\u2019s when I first got to know him, and for the next 27 years we had regular, almost daily, telephone contact. He was talking to me about the history of the Dodecanese struggle and current issues concerning the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/a295-Prominent16i-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/a295-Prominent16i-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-74133\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c4\u03b5 \u03b8\u03b1 \u03c3\u03b5 \u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03ac\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9. Always, I will remember you.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A year before he left this world, he started talking about December sunsets and every week he sent me an envelope with old books and DYA and NDCA documents, with the note: \u201cto remember me\u201d or \u201cyou better have them\u201d (Today all this together with my archive is in the Hellenism Abroad archive at Queens College, New York City University). In December 2000, he sent me an envelope with the relevant documents and information for the annual renewal of the NDCA operating license, and with the arrival of the new year 2001, along with his New Year\u2019s wishes, he also left me his last order: \u201cHold on to NDCA\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Memories stand up in front of the last pillar of the Dodecanese Freedom. We must not forget the marks left by the passing of Manolis Athanasiadis from this life. With his combativeness, his admirable persistence in taking advantage of historical moments, even with major sacrifices, he contributed to the realization of the eternal dream of the Dodecanese. Now the oil in the lamp of his life has run out, but once its flame was strong, it was a torch that kindled the hearts of the Dodecanese and illuminated their steps on the path of duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manolis Athanasiadis, in his passing from this world, left everything that is good and useful to his fellow man, to his homeland and to the place where he was born. In his passage, he left behaviors and morals for imitation and example: as an academic, as a journalist, as a tireless worker for the societies and above all as an ardent patriot.
