Mavris (1899-1978)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicholas Mavris was born in 1899 in Zagazig, Egypt, where his parents had settled, coming from Kasos. In 1918, Mavris came to Athens where he studied at the Medical School of the University of Athens. In 1923, he returned to Egypt, practicing as a pathologist for two years. In 1925, he went to Paris where specialized in ophthalmology and at the same time attended courses in philology and law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his stay in Athens, Mavris encountered the Dodecanese who were fighting against the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese and were demanding their integration with Greece. Returning to Egypt and influenced by these ideas, he contributed to the establishment of the \u201cCentral Committee of the Dodecanese of Egypt\u201d. Along with the publication of articles in newspapers and diplomatic contacts and actions, he highlighted the tortures suffered by the Dodecanese at the hands of the Italians.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/a298-Prominent17F-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/a298-Prominent17F-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-74479\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a4\u03bf \u03b2\u03b9\u03b2\u03bb\u03af\u03bf \u201cThe Great Glory \u2026\u201d \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03b7\u03b3\u03b7\u03c4\u03ae David Moore Robinson. The book \u201cThe Great Glory \u2026\u201d by Professor David Moore Robinson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In 1936 he returned to Athens working as an ophthalmologist and at the same time he fought for the solution of the Dodecanese problem, serving as president of the \u201cCentral Association of the Dodecanese of Athens\u201d. At the same time, he collaborated with Eleftheroudakis Encyclopedia on issues related to the Dodecanese. He also dealt with historical issues, publishing the three-volume \u201cHistorical Archive of Kasos\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1940, Mavris moved to America, settled in New York and encountered the \u201cDodecanese Youth of America\u201d \u200b\u200b(DYA), which since 1934 had undertaken the struggle for the liberation of the Dodecanese and its integration with Greece. On October 30, 1940, two days after Italy\u2019s attack on Greece, Mavris, with the cooperation of the DYA, founded the \u201cNational Dodecanese Council of America\u201d \u200b\u200b(NDCA), which was joined by all the Dodecanese societies in America and took up the Dodecanese struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mavris became chairman of the board of directors and of the executive committee of the NDCA, with Manolis Kouloukountis and Anthony Papadakis as members of the executive committee and Manolis Athanasiadis as secretary. Mavris contacted the Kassian shipowners Manolis Kouloukountis, Anthony Papadakis, Nicholas Rethymnis and Nicholas Nikolaou (Mavris\u2019 father-in-law) who offered as first installment of $15,000 (worth 1500 British gold pounds, equivalent to one million dollars today). With this money, the NDCA opened offices in Rockefeller Center with two secretaries.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/a298-Prominent17C-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/a298-Prominent17C-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-74477\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a4\u03bf Zagazig \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03b5\u03c0\u03bf\u03c7\u03ae \u03c0\u03bf\u03c5 \u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03ba\u03b5 \u03bf \u039c\u03b1\u03c5\u03c1\u03ae\u03c2. Zagazig when Mavris was born.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>At the same time, Mavris, through radio broadcasts and the publication of articles and letters in American newspapers, tried to inform American politicians and public opinion about the Dodecanese and to influence them in favor of the liberation of the Dodecanese from the Italian occupation. He also tried to present the request of the Dodecanese to the American Department of State as well as to embassies of European countries, to create a positive climate that would lead to a favorable outcome after the end of the War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the same purpose, Mavris wrote several books such as \u201cThe Greek Dodecanese\u201d and \u201cSforza vs. Sforza\u201d and through the NDCA were published \u201cThe Dodecanesians are not Enemy Aliens\u201d and \u201cThe Great Glory and Glamour of the Dodecanese\u201d by David Moore Robinson, professor at Johns Hopkins University. \u201cThe Greek Dodecanese\u201d and \u201cThe Great Glory \u2026\u201d refer to the Greekness of the Dodecanese and include the positions and opinions of American politicians, academics and other intellectuals on the Dodecanese problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Germany and Italy declared war on America and the US Department of Justice imposed the registration of Germans and Italians on the lists of enemy nationals, and they were prohibited from moving to and working in businesses related to defense and war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This created problems for the Dodecanese, who, although Greek, were considered Italian citizens. On February 21, 1942, Mavris submitted a memorandum to the Ministry of Justice, which referred to the history of the Dodecanese and the struggles against the Italian occupation. Three days later, the Minister of Justice Francis Biddle exempted the Dodecanese from their classification as Italian citizens. The NDCA collected the documents, the relevant correspondence, the memorandum and with the history of the whole issue published a booklet entitled \u201cThe Dodecanesians are not Enemy Aliens\u201d, making the Dodecanese problem better known and promoting it in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, Mavris, through the NDCA, managed to extract a statement from the former Italian Foreign Minister Sforza, who had denounced the Titoni-Venizelos agreement. Sforza made some changes, but when pressed for clarification, he stated that Italy must renounce all claims to the Dodecanese. The NDCA published thousands of copies of Mavris\u2019s \u201cSforza contra Sforza\u201d, which referred to the History of the Dodecanese, the Titoni-Venizelos agreement, the denunciation of the agreement and Sforza\u2019s new statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On October 24, 1943, the NDCA organized a Pan-Dodecanese Congress in New York, attended by representatives of Dodecanese organizations from the United States and 12 other countries: England, Australia, Greece, Middle East, Egypt, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, South Africa, Rhodesia, Belgian Congo and Portuguese East Africa. Organizations abroad, which could not attend due to the war, appointed representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Messages of support were sent by prominent clergymen, politicians, professors, intellectuals and many Greek and foreign organizations. The Congress, which was extensively reported by the radio and newspapers, adopted a historic memorandum which was sent to the American Congress, the leaders of the great powers and the international press. Among other things, it expressed gratitude to those who supported the struggle of the Dodecanese and asked the Great Powers and other nations for their contribution to satisfy the demand for national restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When, in 1946, the composition of the American delegation at the Paris Peace Conference became known, the NDCA, chaired by Mavris, rushed to provide it with all the enlightening information and memoranda regarding the Dodecanese. At the same time, friendly Americans gave relevant speeches at universities and on radio programs, resulting in articles and letters in newspapers almost every day supporting the return of the islands to Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without a doubt, this persistent effort by the NDCA achieved its goal. The Greek ambassador, Alexis Kyrou at the Peace Conference wrote:&nbsp;<em>\u00abWhen the Greek claims were to be discussed, the American experts asked the Greek delegation to inform them in detail about them, adding characteristically: \u2018except for the Dodecanese, about which your compatriots in America have already fully informed us\u2019\u00bb.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the official incorporation of the Dodecanese into Greece, the Dodecanese constituted the \u201cGeneral Administration of the Dodecanese\u201d. The Military Administration that had existed until then was replaced by a civil Administration with Nicholas Mavris as the first General Governor. On May 5, Mavris was sworn in Athens and on the 15<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;of the same month arrived in Rhodes and took up his duties. After the liberation of the Dodecanese, the problems of the islands were great, after six centuries of slavery and especially with the Italian occupation. Mavris showed unlimited interest with impressive ability, he was interested in each island\u2019s problems, which he visited regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the parliamentary elections of September 9, 1951, he was elected MP for the Dodecanese. Later, from December 1952 to April 1954, he again served as General Governor of the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1956 Mavris moved to Athens where he became involved in bibliography, serving as president of the \u201cDodecanese Historical and Folklore Society\u201d. He published two of the three volumes of the \u201cDodecanese Bibliography\u201d and was honored by the Academy of Athens. Mavris died in Athens in 1978. Nicholas Mavris\u2019 rich archive was donated to the American School of Classical Studies in 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recommendation: With this publication we end with the portraits of 15 \u039aarpathians and two selected Dodecanese for whom I have enough information. There are still several dozen other Dodecanese, even other Karpathians, from America who, in their passage through this life, left examples for imitation and exemplary work.
