Karpathos: the name of the island and its significance<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name of Karpathos and the meaning of the word Karpathos have been discussed by several historians, archaeologists, linguists and other scientists, even travelers. In the book \u201cHistory of Karpathos, Manolis Makris, SGDT Rhodes 2022\u201d, the author dedicates a chapter presenting all these points of view, with the conclusion that the name Karpathos has pre-Hellenic origins, like Corinth, Zakynthos, Hymettus, Rhodes, Lesbos, Chios etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirty miles west of Kastelorizo \u200b\u200bon the Asia Minor coast, where the ruins of the ancient city of Patera, the river Xanthos empties. Fifty kilometers north from the mouth of Xanthos and four kilometers east of its bank, are preserved the ruins of the ancient city of Lysia Tlos, from which the island of Tilos derives its name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to archaeological findings, the human presence in Crete began on the eastern side of the island around 8000 BC, and 2000 years later the human presence became noticeable in western Crete. These are pre-Hellenic people originating from the Middle East, who, starting from the Asia Minor coast, passed through Rhodes, Karpathos and Kasos to reach Crete, where they created the Minoan civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minoan language was found written in inscriptions in Crete, at first with Cretan hieroglyphic symbols and later with Linear A syllabary impressions, a small part of which has deciphered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, Linear B, which has been found in inscriptions and outside of Crete, in Pylos, Thebes, and Mycenae, was deciphered in 1952 by the English architect and self-taught linguist Michael Ventris, based on relevant research by Professor Alice Kober of Cambridge University. It is the first known Greek language with syllabic images used by the Mycenaeans in the Bronze Age, around 1450 BC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main reason why Linear B has been deciphered, unlike Linear A, is that around 6,000 Linear B inscriptions have been found. While only around 1,400 Linear A inscriptions have been found, and with more limited content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Cyrus Gordon (\u201cEvidence for the Minoan Language\u201d) also dealt with the decipherment of Linear A. Among other things, he mentions the figurative syllabification Ka-Pa-To-Ra which means something that stands high, like a pillar or a mountain, and when the syllable Ra moves after Ka and becomes Ka-Ra-Pa-To, it refers to the Homeric name of Karpathos (\u039a\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u03cc\u03bd \u03c4\u03b5 \u039a\u03ac\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because Karpathos is mostly exposed to westerly winds, prehistoric people who sailed to Crete in their small boats would sail along the eastern side of Karpathos. And as they passed near the coast, the mountains of Karpathos would appear towering and impressive to them, and it is possible that they gave it the name containing the consonants K-r-p-t, from which the name Karpathos came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is supported by the name of the Karpasia peninsula in northeastern Cyprus, which consists of mountains. As is the name of the Karpathian mountain range in Romania and neighboring countries, which has a Pre-Indo-European origin. The geographer Claudius Ptolemy (2nd century BC) is the first known author to use the name Karpatis for the Karpathian mountain range. In the languages \u200b\u200bof the people living in the Karpathian mountain range, the word Karpathia means peak and cliff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, the naming of the word Karpathos is not yet finished.
