The expression that is famous in Symi and Symian communities, referring to someone with an exceptionally beautiful voice, has become famous: \u201cWhat a voice he has! \u2026 like Vayiano\u2019s.\u201d This is what my father, who was born in Symi in 1906 and spent his youth there, used to tell me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the early years of the last century, when sponge fishing, trade and shipping were flourishing in Symi, there were 14 parishes in Gialos and Horio with their churches (Evangelism, Saint John, Panagia Lemonitissa, Panagia of Castle, Saint Nicholas, Sain Demetrius, Holy Cross, Sain George in Vigli, Saint Panteleimonas, Holy Trinidy, Panagia Hartomeni, Saint Athanasius, Saint Eleftherius, Saint George in Pedi).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to the economic prosperity, there was great competition between the churches. The church committees gave more importance to the cantor than to the priest. The cantor\u2019s salary was proportional to his singing skills, and was around 1000-1500 Italian lire per year, when the gold lire corresponded to 63 lire. There were of course exceptions, the teacher Lambrinidis of the Holy Trinidy, who was considered the best chanter, received 3000 lire. The chanter at Stavros, during my father\u2019s time, was Michalakis Fostinis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 1923, the ecclesiastical committee of Saint Athanasius decided to hire the best cantor they could find and sent John Kastrounis to Piraeus (father of the mathematician Nikolas Kastrounis who served as headmaster at the Karpathos High School for a decade, 1954-63).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Symians of Piraeus recommended Vagianos to Kastrounis and agreed to the astronomical sum of 12,000 lire, not counting the gratuities. He was a refugee from Asia Minor, a widower, about 50 years old, and came to Symi with a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vayianos had a sweet and strong and polyphonic voice. He sang with Byzantine music, and it was a joy of harmony and you thought you were listening to an entire choir. Apart from Sundays and holidays, he sang at weddings and baptisms, but he did not sing at funerals because he was easily moved. In his private life, he liked to drink his ouzo. He used to go to Elias Hatzinikolaou (Yianiski) in Gialos to get his ouzo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As soon as the Saint-Athanasians brought Vagianos, the committee of Saint John in Gialos, which had many parishioners and wealthy merchants, sent an envoy to Piraeus to find a better cantor than Vagianos. They found a deacon, a man of good appearance, and agreed on 12,000 lire a year. Although his voice was strong, he did not have the melody of Vagianos\u2019 voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day, the fraternal friends and young men of the time, George S. Cassotis (my father) and Dimitris J. Kastrounis (known as Korais) took a rowboat from Gialos and accompanied by Vagianos, went to Sykidi to swim, where many other Symians had also gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the afternoon they got on the boat for the return trip, and as soon as they opened a little, Vagianos felt like singing, putting his palms in front of his mouth so that you could be heard from afar. The surrounding Symians were so fascinated that they gave up swimming and fishing and with their rowboats formed a semicircle around Vagianos\u2019 rowboat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
