Italian civil servants in Karpathos, during the Italian occupation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many times, years and even centuries pass, and rivalries remain in the memory of nations. However, there are also cases where after a few years they are forgotten, and we begin to see our former enemies as our fellow human beings. From this perspective, we will refer to three Italian civil servants who served in Karpathos during the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the eastern side (right) in the Government Office Square, the building that eventually housed the Italian Post Office was built.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Camilo Cottoni<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Camilo Cottoni was one of the first Italians to come to Karpathos, who organized and managed Karpathos post office. The Administration Building and the building that housed the Italian post office had not been built, at first the post office was housed in the house of Irene Gergatsouli and later next to Vagelistra where the cafe of Alkiviadis Manolakakis was located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cottoni had good relations with the Karpathians and later married Eugenia Matsaki with whom they had two children, Agelina and Mario. I remember, when later returned to Karpathos and for a while lived in Hazinoulas Kontos house, near the Administration Building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The neighborhood children would hang out and play with Agelina and Mario. What impressed us, was when we saw Agelina making the Catholic sign of the cross (with her palm open).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remigio Bono<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1929, Camilo Cottoni\u2019s position was taken over by Remigio Bono, he was a model of an employee dedicated to his duties and serving the citizen and keeping distance from politics. He took in several young Karpathians and trained them. Michael Giannakis became a telegrapher, and Logothetis Diakidis became the postmaster of Karpathos, during the British rule and after the Incorporation of the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bono and his family lived in Kalliopi G. Skevophylakas house, where his son Nicomede was born in 1935. The same year, he was the best man at the wedding of Manolis Lyristis and Kalliopi Praxouli in Pyles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Years passed and in 1975, Bono\u2019s wife, Guglielma, and their daughters Liliana and Luciana visited Karpathos. There were still many Karpathians who remembered their time on the island and welcomed them with friendliness and hospitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicomede, who had always been haunted by the nostalgia of returning to the place where he was born, realized his dream in the summer of 2004. There, after 69 years, he still found people who remembered his parents and his birth. He went and saw the post office where his father worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 29th, at \u201cEsperides\u201d restaurant, he celebrated his 69th<\/sup> birthday with a group of friends. He went to Pyles where he was hosted by Marigoula, along with her husband, Captain Fountis of Kasos, Nicomede\u2019s father was the best man in her parents\u2019 wedding. A few days later, his emotions reached their peak when Minas and Popi Skevophylakas invited him to their home, the house where he was born, and thus he found himself among a select and cordial company of friends and relatives of Skevophylakas couple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Searching for his roots, his steps led him to the City Hall. The staff treated him with love and sympathy and tried in every way to serve him. They searched for over 1,000 municipal cards from that era, but his was not found. Eventually, his card was found in Kalymnos, where his father was transferred in 1937.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he did not live to fulfill his last wish, namely, to obtain Greek citizenship, settle in Karpathos and die there. The following summer, while he was in Karpathos, he fell ill and, with the care of the friends he had made in Karpathos, was transferred to the hospital in Rhodes. His son arrived in Rhodes and, as soon as his health improved, took him to Italy, where he died and was buried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giovanni Demarti<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Customs House in Pigadia, Finanza officer Giovanni Demarti served, who lived with his family in Maroukla Roumpakis house. One night, in February 1942, after midnight, Demarti\u2019s seven-year-old son went to the house of John Ioannidis, who lived on the same street, knocked on the door shouting: \u201cGiovanni, Giovanni!\u201d and as soon as the door opened, the little boy said: \u201cpadre morto\u201d (father dead). The neighborhood rose up and the Italians were notified. By dawn, the news had spread to Pigadia and many people, even the kids from the other neighborhood, gathered outside Demarti\u2019s house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As people said, Demarti had drunk a gallon of wine that he could not stand. Later it was spread that he was jealous of his wife and committed suicide. The Italian officers and soldiers who came to his house, placed the coffin on a truck covered with an Italian flag, decorated with flowers and a dozen wreaths. An honor guard with mournful music accompanied the deceased to his last resting place, in the Italian cemetery in Platiolo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the summer of 2006, Demarti\u2019s granddaughter, Elma Giovanini, came to Karpathos to gather information about her grandfather\u2019s death. As she told us, she suspected there was some family secret, because her uncle avoided any discussion of this matter. We gave her, discreetly and honestly, whatever information we had. Although our memories of her grandfather moved and hurt her, she left satisfied.
