Italian military officers in Karpathos, during the Italian occupation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a previous article, we dealt, from a military perspective, with senior Italian officers who served in Karpathos during WWII. In this article, we will refer to the humanitarian behavior of three junior officers.<\/p>\n\n\n

Ennio Grimaldi<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A book (\u201cMelancholic Spring\u201d) was written about the love of the Italian lieutenant Ennio Grimaldi and Antigone Giannakis. A few years ago, the children of the time remembered and sang \u201cPrimavera Malinconica\u201d, which Ennio wrote and set to music. They also remembered Marigoula (Antimisiari), who tried in every way to help the young people in love, as well as the little girl (Fotini Fr. Hiotaki), the \u201cpostman\u201d who carried the love letters that Ennio and Antigone exchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, when the Germans came and we moved to Aperi, we lived in the same neighborhood. Ennio with Petty Officer Roseli in the house of Venetia Bertou in Hochlakia, we were a little further down in Lori in the house of Hristofer Sakellaridis, and Giannakis with his family three houses down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many times, in the evenings, young and old alike would go out to the courtyards of their houses to enjoy the nostalgic melodies that Ennio played on the violin and Roseli on the accordion, from the courtyard of their house, giving the gossips the opportunity to comment: \u201cthe Italian is playing again for Giannakis\u2019 daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

The songs spoke of love (Madonnina, Madonnina dell\u2019 Egeo\/The beautiful girl of the Agean), of nostalgia for the homeland (Terra lontana, terra mia\/My distant homeland, oh my homeland, how tired I am of wandering), and of the beauty of nature. On the evening, the day the Germans executed Alessandro, Ennio\u2019s violin did not \u201csing\u201d love, but the heartbreaking lament of the betrayed young man\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ennio had already died when I decided to write \u201cMelancholic Spring\u201d and through Antigomi I encountered Ennio\u2019s family in Italy, who provided me with documents and photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, when the book presentation was to take place in Karpathos, his niece Elvirella Grimaldi came from Italy with her daughter Enrica. First, she went to Rhodes, to meet Antigone, and then she came to Karpathos. Her emotion is indescribable when, at the book presentation, she heard \u201cPrimavera Malinconica\u201d, written and composed by her uncle, being sung.<\/p>\n\n\n

I took her to see the houses where her uncle lived (Sofias Konstantakis in Pigadia and Venetias Bertos in Aperi) and to the ruined Italian forest guardhouse in Ly (in Mertona), where her uncle went to recover. She got to know the beaches and other sights of Karpathos and got a taste of the island where her uncle lived, sang and fell in love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following year, as Elvirella\u2019s guest, I visited Cava Dei Tirreni, the town where Ennio grew up and lived most of his life, and met his other niece, Silvana Moscariello. In Cava I visited the church of Santa Maria del Olmo, inside which is carved Grimandi\u2019s coat of arms. During my stay there, I also visited other sights of the surrounding area and Southern Italy: ancient Pompeii, Vesuvius, Salerno and Phaestum, founded by the ancient Greeks of \u201cMagna Grecia\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I knew Antigone when I was a child, but from a distance, before she moved with her family to Rhodes (1945). When I started writing the book I met her in person, in the Old Town of Rhodes. I gained her trust, and she opened her heart to me.<\/p>\n\n\n

On the day of the book presentation in Rhodes, she was surrounded by her friends and her face was radiant with joy. They congratulated her because she was worthy of experiencing a great and memorable love. I called her regularly and every time I passed through Rhodes I visited her. She confessed to me that on a small table, next to her bed, the book was always there. It was her best companion, she read it and reread it and with it she spent her hours of loneliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antonio Di Carlo<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lieutenant Antonio Di Carlo served in Compagnia Commando and was responsible for military supplies. From this position he helped several Karpathians. He married Frango Safi, who had been adopted by George Elias Matsakis. After the end of the war, Di Carlo returned to Italy, where his wife followed him. Although he was originally from Southern Italy, he settled in Northern Italy, where, as he said, he was not welcomed because he was Southern Italian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many years, they visited Karpathos in the summers with their daughters, sons-in-law and granddaughters, and they felt at home, as they assured. Di Carlo used to say: \u201cI feel more at home with the Karpathians than with my neighbors in Italy. In the morning when I go down to the port, I will meet a dozen people who will greet me by my name.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Michele Memola<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michele Memola was born on January 27, 1916 in Terlizzi, Bari, and was drafted on May 15, 1937. On June 1, 1943, he arrived in Karpathos with the rank of second lieutenant and assumed duty in the anti-aircraft battery of Kastello at the airport, and in August was transferred to the hill of Saint Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 6, two days before the \u00ab\u0391rmistizio\u00bb (Italy\u2019s capitulation to the Allies) was announced, a German battalion landed on Karpathos to which the Italians surrendered the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Italians thought the war was over for them, but new problems began. Those Italians who did not want to cooperate with the Germans were sent to prisoner-of-war camps in Germany. The ships carrying them to Crete and mainland Greece were bombed by the Allies, who did not know their contents.<\/p>\n\n\n

Every Italian had to choose, surrender to the Germans or hide. Those who decided to hide and were captured were executed, like the soldier Alessandro Orofino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memola decided to hide and went to Mesochori where he became known as \u201cTenentaki\u201d, due to his rank and physical build. Manolis Moshonas, George Politis, Pashos Stamatiadis and Manolis Harokopos hid him in their homes, and gave him civilian clothes to wear, so that the Germans would not recognize him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, when the Germans offered a reward of 10,000 lire and intensified patrols, they hid him in the archaeological ruins at Lefkos and in a cave and later in a remote stable in the bay of Makry Gialos. He lived on fish that he caught and wild fruits and herbs that he gathered and on the food that the Mesohorites brought him, despite the shortages that existed, and at risk of their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n

The chase lasted three months and, unable to bear the agony, he decided to end his life. At the last moment, he changed his mind, and the bullet lodged in the ceiling of the stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 17, 1944, increasingly hunted, he preferred to surrender to the Italian police station chief in Mesochori, who handed him over to Lieutenant Stolzmann who interrogated him and imprisoned him in Menetes. He left him hungry and to appease his hunger he would grind wood and eat wood shavings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After two months, he was sent to Rhodes and from there to Germany, where he was liberated by the Allies and returned home on July 14, 1945.<\/p>\n\n\n

The years passed and he often corresponded with the people who helped him during the war, and twice, in 1968 and 1971, he visited Karpathos to thank them in person. As soon as he entered the stable where he was hiding, he looked up at the ceiling and saw the bullet he had intended for himself embedded in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, his son, Massimo Memola, along with his cousin Lieutenant Colonel Gioacchino Memola, visited Karpathos to see the place where his father was hiding and to thank the descendants of the people who protected and saved him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, Massimo Memola, using his father\u2019s archive, recorded the history of his father\u2019s adventure in a book, entitled \u201cIL TENENTAKI\u201d. The book was translated by Manolis Cassotis and published by the \u201cCenter for Karpathian Research\u201d. A year later, Massimo and Gioacchino Memola returned to Karpathos with their families and representatives of the Italian embassy in Athens. At the church of Panagia \u201cVrysiani\u201d in Mesochori, a memorial service was held by Archimandrite Ambrosius for the repose of the souls of Michele and those who helped him survive. This was followed by a reception in the church building and a book presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n
