Karpathos<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since ancient times, the Dodecanese and the surrounding Aegean islands have formed a single economic and demographic entity with many reorganizations. Within this geographical area, significant population movement has been observed. This is also evident in the surnames found in Symi and the Symian communities: Amariotis (Amari, Crete), Andriotis (Andros), Antimahiotis (Antimahia, Kos), Kariotis (Ikaria), Karpathakis, Karpathakiou, Kassotis, Kritikos, Kypraios, Kotis, Lerias (Leros), Lindiakos (Lindos, Rhodes), Melidonis (Melidoni, Crete), Mytilinios, Nisyrios, Patiniotis (Patmos), Roditis, Santorinios, Sifonios (Sifnos), Skiathitis (Skiathos), Skopelitis, Sfakianos (Sfakia, Crete).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/a308-Symi14-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/a308-Symi14-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-75737\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u039f \u03ad\u03bc\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2 \u03a3\u03ac\u03b2\u03b2\u03b1\u03c2 \u039a\u03b1\u03c3\u03c3\u03ce\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2. The merchant Savvas Cassotis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These surnames indicate a significant population movement from the surrounding area to Symi. A similar migratory flow is also observed in the opposite direction, as shown by the existence of large Symian settlements in Rhodes and Piraeus, and smaller ones that exist in other parts of Greece and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symi, an important urban, commercial and maritime center, naturally experienced population movements outwards even when the number of its inhabitants was still maintained at stable levels. The population movements from Symi also created smaller Symian settlements on the surrounding islands, such as Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first known teacher of Karpathos is the Symian Michael Tiliakos (1808-1828), who, as his name suggests, was originally from Tilos. Tiliakos founded a school in Aperi, the capital of Karpathos at the time, and several of his documents have survived: dowry agreements, wills, and sales contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/a308-Symi13-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/a308-Symi13-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-75736\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u039f \u03b2\u03bf\u03c5\u03c4\u03b7\u03c7\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2 \u03a3\u03c4\u03ac\u03b8\u03b7\u03c2 \u03a7\u03b1\u03b6\u03ae\u03c2. The diver Stathis Hazis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The most prominent teacher of Karpathos in the 19<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century was John Fokas (1832-1863) from Symi. For two years he taught in the main village of Olympos and then moved to Aperi. Fokas introduced school curriculum for each class, student\u2019s register, a system of public examinations and other modern methods for the time. Fokas married in Karpathos and left many descendants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1866, the Symian Demosthenes Haviaras, as secretary of the Metropolis of Rhodes, accompanied the Metropolitan of Rhodes Synesius to Karpathos to hear the complaints that the Karpathians had with their Metropolitan Nikephoros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some churches of Karpathos, works by the Symian hagiographer Neophytos, who stayed in Karpathos for a considerable period, have been found. In Aperi lived the cantor John or Giannios, who moved to Pigadia in 1872 when the church of Vagelistra was built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 1900, Theocharis \u201cthe Symian\u201d arrived in Karpathos, where he married. He lived in Pigadia, built a kagawa (barge) to transport, and unloaded boats that were idling far from the pier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/a308-Symi12-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/a308-Symi12-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-75735\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u039f \u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2 \u0399\u03c9\u03ac\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2 \u03a6\u03c9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c2. The teacher John Fokas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last years of the Turkish occupation, Anthony Zoannou, a Symian, known as \u201cAntonio\u201d, passed through Karpathos. He was well-known in Symi and undertook difficult missions in Dodecanese and in the Asia Minor coast. On one such mission in Karpathos, he killed a Turkish policeman in the area of \u200b\u200bSaint Peter of Pigadia, and from then on the area took the name of \u201cTurk\u201d or \u201cPoliceman\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1913, the Italian battleship Regina Margarita sunken its anchor in the treacherous waters of the Gulf of Pigadia and lost it along with its chain. They brought the Symian diver (without a diving suit) Stathis Hazis. During one of the dives, at a depth of 85 meters that lasted 3.5 minutes, he tied the chain that held the anchor and the Italians retrieved it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The occupation of the Dodecanese by the Italians had disastrous consequences for the economy of Symi, which lost the Asia Minor market and was followed by an unprecedented exodus from the island. The following year, 1916, his brother, merchant tailor Sotiris Polemikos, arrived with his wife Haritomeni and their children John, Despina, Manolis and Ourania. Sotiris, as well as his son John, performed as cantor at Vagelistra church free of charge. Following the recommendation of Sotiris Polemikos, it was established that in Vagelistra\u2019s feast made with menoula, as in Panormitis, which was made with fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1920, a Symian archimandrite arrived in Karpathos, who had been officiating at Othos for two years. At the same time, the tobacco seller Nick Bouzakis and his brother Aristides and the lantern maker Seraphim Hadjigeorgiou arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1921, the merchant tailor Michael Ioannidis came to Karpathos, and around 1928, his sons John and Vasilis, who married and settled in Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1922, the brothers Kostas, Stelios and Sotiris Farmakidis arrived in Karpathos. Kostas married in Mesochori and the other two in Diafani. Kostas and Stelios were excellent captains, they owned a boat together that made transfers between Rhodes and Karpathos. In the same year, the lantern maker Anastasios Papanikitas arrived in Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/a308-Symi9-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/a308-Symi9-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-75732\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a4\u03bf \u03b5\u03be\u03c9\u03ba\u03bb\u03ae\u03c3\u03b9 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u0391\u03c1\u03c7\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03ad\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5 \u039c\u03b9\u03c7\u03b1\u03ae\u03bb \u03c3\u03c4\u03b1 \u03a0\u03b7\u03b3\u03ac\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u039a\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03ac\u03b8\u03bf\u03c5, \u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03ac\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 \u03a0\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c1\u03bc\u03af\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2 \u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03ae \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03b9\u03bf\u03cd\u03c7\u03bf\u03c5 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03a3\u03cd\u03bc\u03b7\u03c2. The chapel of Archangel Michael in Pigadia, Karpathos, is named Panormitis in honor of the patron saint of Symi.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1922, the merchant Savvas G. Cassotis sent his brother John and next year his son George to Karpathos, and they opened a shop. John brought his wife Marika and some of their children and stayed for a few years. George brought his brothers John and Kostas and his son-in-law John Saragas. George and Kostas got married and stayed in Karpathos. George soon became one of the largest merchants of Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the archive of the Volonakis brothers\u2019 foundry in Symi, the bronze mold for the French-designed tiles for the ceramic factory of Konstantinos Karaxis was manufactured there, which arrived in Karpathos in 1923.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, Stavros Margaritis also arrived, who later brought his sisters Maria and Evangelia and his younger brother Nick, Maria moved to Rhodes and Evangelia to Piraeus. Stavros opened a cafe in Pigadia and operated a seasonal cafe during Larniotissa\u2019s festival. The church of Vangelistra in Karpathos, in which several Symian chanters served.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1926 came to Karpathos the merchants Nikitas Moschos and his family and his brother-in-law Vasilis Gaitanos. In 1928 came and settled in Aperi the shoemaker Dimitris son of Theodosius, whose maternal surname was Vagios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1934, the goldsmith Nikolas Hrysofos arrived with his wife Haritomeni and their son Dino. Nikolas, as his surname indicates, came from a large and well-known family that had been involved in goldsmithing for generations. Dinos married in Karpathos and he and his descendants continue the family profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1937, the tobacco cutter and steet lamp maker Michael Antoniadis arrived with his family. In 1938, Nikitas Koumnenis arrived with his wife Mariora and their children John, Dikaia and George. During the war, the shoemaker John Margaritis came to Karpathos. In 1948, his older brother Stavros followed him with his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Symians who came to Karpathos after WWII came from the Symian community of Rhodes. In 1949, the electrician Nick Manias and his wife Katholiki came with their family, and in 1950, the furniture maker Kosmas Gialourakis and his wife Fengari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During 1951-53, the headmaster of Karpathos High School was the Symian physicist Simos Hadzistavriou, and during 1954-1963 the also Symian mathematician Nikolas Kastrounis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1945, immediately after the war, the Symians living in Pigadia numbered 10 families with approximately 50 members, when the population of Pigadia was around 800 inhabitants. Most of the Symian people, due to mixed marriages, assimilated with the local population, but they have retained certain characteristics, such as food and vocabulary. The names Haritomeni, Elikoni, Katholiki, Dikaia and Savvas found in Karpathos are of Symian origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The influence of Symi on Karpathos is greater than the numerical presence of the Symian community. Three of the monasteries dedicated to the Archangel Michael, in Pigadia, Voutsa and Tristomo, are called Panormitis, after the patron saint of Symi. Also, in Karpathos the following folk song has survived (in free translation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Symian Panerimiotis, who resides in Symi,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>come and cast your blessing on the couple who are getting married.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, from 1874-78 the abbot of Panormitis was Abbot Isaias from Olympus. At the same time, there was a movement of Karpathians to Symi, mainly from Olympus, who were involved in construction. Nikolis the Karpathian (Vasilarakis) remained famous in Symi for the \u201cgisternes\u201d (cisterns) that he built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Karpathians who moved to Symi settled in the district Myli and were known as tsantikades because they wore boots. In Symi, they call boots tsantikia. That is why they call Panormitis, the patron saint of the island, \u201cTsantika\u201d because in one of his images he wears boots (tsantikia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some builders took their children or of their close relatives to Symi to study at the \u201cSaint Marina\u201d School and later at the \u201cPanormitian Gymnasium\u201d, from which in the seven-year period 1926-33 nine Carpathians graduated: George Chalkias, George Kanakis, Elias Zografidis, Minas Filippakis, Minas Hatzantoniadis, Emmanuel Protopsaltis, George Sakellis, Nik. Gerakis, Emanuel Hiotis. Subsequently, all of them progressed in letters and sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the Karpathians who went to Symi adapted and assimilated into the local environment. Balaskas\u2019 family engaged in sponge fishing and one of them, Anthony Balaskas, emigrated to America in Tarpon Springs where he continued the new family tradition. By the surnames Abdelis, Vasilarakis, Karpathakis and others are found in the Symian communities in America.
