Many Rhodians came from the villages to celebrate (May 9, 1945).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 13, 1943, the Allies cleared North Africa of the German-Italians, and on July 10, the landing in Sicily took place, resulting in the fall of the Mussolini government on July 25. Italy was tired and trying to get out of the war, while the belligerents were preparing to adapt to the new reality and take advantage of the expected developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On September 8, 1943, as soon as Italy\u2019s armistice with the Allies was announced, the Germans imposed themselves on the Italians in Rhodes, while two days earlier they had landed on Karpathos. The Allies, with the cooperation of the Italians, occupied Kos and Leros, but in October 1943, the Germans returned and occupied Kos, and a month later, after a hard battle, occupied Leros. Thus, three months after the Armistice, the Dodecanese came under German occupation, except for Kastellorizo, which the Allies had occupied immediately after the announcement of Italy\u2019s armistice with the Allies and used it as a forward base. From Kastellorizo, they continued to harass the Germans with reconnaissance detachments and raids from the Asia Minor coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On September 25, 1944, the Allies occupied Symi where the \u201cHoly Company\u201d and the 281<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;Indian Brigade were stationed and, using it as a forward base, began isolated attacks against the Germans in the other Dodecanese islands.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/a313-May8-Symi11-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/a313-May8-Symi11-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-76924\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u039f\u03b9 \u03a1\u03bf\u03b4\u03af\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2 \u03c0\u03b1\u03bd\u03b7\u03b3\u03c5\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03bf\u03c5\u03bd \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u0391\u03c0\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03c5\u03b8\u03ad\u03c1\u03c9\u03c3\u03b7 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03a1\u03cc\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5. Rhodians celebrate the Liberation of Rhodes (May 9, 1945).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On October 4, 1944, the last Germans left Karpathos and the next day the Karpathians revolted against the Italians who were collaborating with the Germans and left in their place, and liberated Karpathos and neighboring Kasos. On October 17, the British, notified by the Karpathians who went to Egypt with a two-ton boat, arrived in Karpathos with the destroyers Terpsichore and Cleveland and occupied the two islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On February 28, 1945, the Allies, coming from Symi and using the \u201cHoly Company\u201d and part of the Indian Brigade, attacked the Germans and the next day liberated Tilos. The Germans then began to withdraw from the other smaller islands, concentrating their forces on Rhodes, Leros, Kos and Kalymnos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the area around Germany began to tighten. The Allies were advancing from the West and the Russians from the East. German resistance began to collapse and on April 29 Hitler committed suicide. Fotis Varelis\u2019 epigram, on Kapsopoulos\u2019 house wall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, in various parts of Europe, such as Norway, the British Channel Islands located in the English Channel on the French coast, western Crete, Rhodes and some islands of the Dodecanese are under German occupation and had to be surrendered to the Allies based on the prescribed procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the same evening of May 7, 1945, General Alfred Jodl ordered Brigadier General Otto Wagener to surrender the Dodecanese to the Allies, and after consultation with the Allied headquarters in Symi, Wagener arrived on a German ship opposite Cape Aleppo, where he was picked up by an Allied destroyer and transported to Symi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arriving at the port, he was greeted by Lt. Col. Acland and led him to the house of Kapsopoulos, where the Allied Headquarters was located. The Symians celebrate the German\u2019s surrender with dances and songs (May 8, 1945).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Until the decision of the Great Powers to give the Dodecanese to Greece was made, there was a suspicion that some of the islands could be given to Turkey).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately after the signing of the Dodecanese surrender by the Germans, the Symians, young and old, poured into the streets, down to the port with flags, singing and dancing, celebrating the historic event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next day, the Allied Forces went from Symi and occupied Rhodes, where similar patriotic events followed, not only by those living in the city, but also by many who came from the villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 15, 1945, the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Viceroy Damascenos, arrived in Rhodes with the battleship \u201cAverof\u201d, who performs on the battleship a memorial service, in memory of the fallen Dodecanesians.
