Trade relations in the Dodecanese during the Italian occupation<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the occupation of the Dodecanese by Italy, the commercial situation in the Dodecanese began to change. Among other things, the Italians obliged merchants to keep accounting books based on the Italian Civil Law which were controlled by the \u201cCon Decreto del Tribunale Civile e penale di Rodi\u201d. Fortunately, the accounting books and correspondence of the Symi merchant Savvas G. Cassotis have been preserved from which much information about the commercial situation in the Dodecanese during the Italian occupation period comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first gradually, and then rapidly, the Italians began to transfer the commercial center of the Dodecanese from Symi to Rhodes, where the commercial activity of the Jews there began to develop (Isaac Alhadeff, Saul Alhadeff, Solomon Alhadeff, Sons of Solomon Alhadeff, Jerusalem Avsaradel, Jerusalem & Alkana, Capeluto Brothers, Venenzo Castaldo, Astlia Corsini, Corsini & Calomeni, Isaac Manese, Solomon Behar, Benjamin Behar, Husdai Moreno, Hordochai Menese, Musafir Turiel, Frango & Rahamim, H. M. Frango, Frango Rahamim).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As well as the Greeks of Rhodes (Apostolou Brothers, Agiakatsikas, Sons of Agiakatsikas, Nicholas Asprakis, Athanasius Vomvilas, George Kamezopoulos, Kamezopoulos & Tsouvalas, Kapougias Brothers, Miltiades Kozas, Michael N. At the same time, in addition to the banks, Italian companies began to operate (Temi Company, Kyrasoli & Co., Giatome Ettore Aperio, Isal Rodi, Saul Rodi, Netanel Rodi, Jeanco Rodi, Brocchi Figlio from Trieste and another company from Neapoli, as well the company Fr\u00f6hlich & Wolter from Germany, and another company from France). Also active are traders from the Greek mainland who deal with exports to the Dodecanese (George Ag. Angelidis, Sons of K. Veropoulos, Konstantinos I. Karakostas, Kanaris Papanastasopoulos, D. N. The goods traded in the Dodecanese at this time are mainly edible: flour (from Italy, Australia, Bulgaria, France and Russia), cold cuts (anchovies, clams, cod, bream, shrimp, olives, crabs, squid, kasseri cheese, kolios, lacerda, mortadella, bonito, peppers, lizards, mackerel, salmon, sardines from California, Spain and Portugal, taramas, feta cheese and hapsia), ouzo, almonds, carbonic acid for sodas, spices, butter, milk, olive oil, sugar, sweets, corn, walnuts, coffee, cognac, wine, barley, lemons, Turkish delight, pasta, spaghetti, macaroni, Chian mastic, mastics, beers, Saint Soula\u2019s water, dried figs, potatoes (Cyprus and Rhodes), melon seeds, bran, rice (glazed, ragout, Egyptian, Italian and Japanese), chickpeas, sesame, wheat, garlic, soy, chocolates, seed oil, grapes, tahini, tea, lentils, beans, peanuts, halva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exchanges<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many transactions took place between merchants and between merchants and other professionals through barter. Savvas Cassotis imported flour, sugar, rice, cold cuts and other foodstuffs. Konstantine Brouzakis imported cigarettes and tobacco and Vogiazis\u2019 Brothers petroleum. Barter took part and each one supplied his customers with goods that he himself had not imported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Savvas Cassotis supplies sugar to Stelianos Papadopoulos\u2019 tahini factory and in exchange receives tahini and halva. He supplies Petros Fournaris and Manolis Maravelias flour, exchanging it for bread and crackers. He supplies sugar to the Zouroudis Brothers for sweets made in Symi. For the goods he supplies, the Monastery of Panormitis gives him the candle that the faithful bring and have left over. He resells the goods resulting from the exchange to his customers. Angelidis & Kypraios import boat engines, which trade in other islands. In Karpathos alone, through Savvas Cassotis, they provided four engines to: Manolis Lambros for \u00a3450, Kostas & Stelios Farmakidis for \u00a3300, Nicholas Protopapas for \u00a3150, Emmanouil Hatziantoniou (small engine) for \u00a330.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In exchange for the rent of shops and warehouses in Gialos and Chorio, with George Petridis, Dionysius Miliaratos, Anastasius Maravelias and Agapitos Agapitidis, he offers goods. The Kakakios Brothers were paid with goods for the freight he owed them, as were the builder Nicholas Karpathakis, the carpenter Elias Kastrounis, the shoemaker Antonis Drosos and the tailors Nikitas Sifonios and George Askitis for work they did for him. Monetary exchanges<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Italian lira was the official currency in circulation in the Dodecanese, but in international transactions the English pound (\u00a3) was the most recognized currency, equivalent to one English gold pound. American dollars ($), gold French francs, Egyptian pounds, and Greek drachmas also circulated. Of all the currencies, the most stable was the dollar, 5 dollars being equivalent to about one pound and one dollar being exchanged for 16 lire. Four drachmas were exchanged for one lira, and 133 French paper francs were equivalent to one pound. The ratio of the dollar to the pound was stable, but not that of the other currencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to banknotes, gold coins were also in circulation based on the English pound, which was equivalent to the American five-dollar gold coin. The Italian gold lira and the French 20-franc gold coin were of lesser value. Later, with the global financial crisis, the price of gold increased, from 25 dollars an ounce to 35 dollars, and the English gold pound from 63 to 93 lire. Eventually, the English gold pound stabilized at 10 dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Banks<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, banks began to operate in Rhodes: Banca di Roma, Banca di Sicilia, Alhadeff Bank. Merchants could have accounts in lire, sterling and dollars. Banca di Roma charged an interest rate of 8%, while the Alhadeff Bank charged 12%. Suppliers charged merchants 9%, but they were exempted if the bill was paid within a specified period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transportation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transports from abroad were made from Alexandria and Port-Sayt with the steamships \u201cAnna\u201d, \u201cSemiramis\u201d, \u201cAegeus\u201d and \u201cPoulia\u201d and Agapitos X# Nikitas\u2019s gasoline, and from Italy with the steamships \u201cBen Bettino\u201d and \u201cPoulia\u201d. From Piraeus came the steamships \u201cIthaki\u201d and \u201cStampalia\u201d, some gasoline such as the \u201cIperochi\u201d and caiques. All went to Rhodes, and some stopped at Symi and other islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport from Rhodes to the other islands was done by boats and by the Dodecanese internal line ships \u201cKallithea\u201d and later \u201cFiume\u201d. Communication between Symi and Rhodes was relatively easy, due to the close distance and the existence of several Symian boats (brothers Nicholas, George and Loukas Kakakios, George Apokottos, Nikitas Angelos, Philemon Arfaras, Fotis Zouroudis, Stratis Magos, John Makris, Stelianos Mavrakis, Antonios Balaskas, George Paralis, Vasilios Roditis, Sotiris Sarris, Panagiotis Sykallos, Konstantine Farmakidis, Agapitos X# Nikitas and Anhtony St. Chatzantonis), rarely with \u201cKallithea\u201d and \u201cFiume\u201d. The transport of goods from Rhodes to Karpathos was done by Manolis Lambros\u2019s boat and the liner. In some cases, transportation was made from Symi to Karpathos by the liner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remittances for goods<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remittances for goods originating from Rhodes were made by the merchants themselves who went to Rhodes, or by the merchants of Rhodes and their agents who visited the islands. Most of them were made with the captains of the caiques that transported the goods. They were people of absolute trust, the value of several remittances exceeded \u00a3100. The remittances to Italy, Egypt and mainland Greece were made through a bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business travel<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the occupation of the Dodecanese by Italy and the Asia Minor catastrophe, some merchants began to expand their commercial activities to the surrounding islands. In 1922, Savvas Cassotis, with the boat of Argyris Kastania, sent goods with his brother John and sold them to Nisyros, Tilos, Halki and Karpathos. The following year, because sales in Karpathos were satisfactory, he established a permanent trading post under the management of his brother John and his son George. Among the other merchants who were active in Karpathos at this time were: Konstantine Amanezis, Manolis Matsakis, Nikitas Lyristakis, George Orfanos, Alexis Manolakis and Gaitanos Moschou from Symi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travels extent<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1925, Savvas Cassotis partnered with Argyris Kastanias. He put up the funds for the goods and Kastanias his boat. Two or three days before the end of May, they hired sailors for the crew, bought supplies for the journey, crackers, bread and other food and several packs of cigarettes and matches for the captain and the crew. They loaded 6 tons of lime and on June 10, before they departed, the priest came and performed blessing and those who came to wish them good journey and good business were treated to mastic. On June 13, on their way to Paros, they stopped at Nisyros and loaded firewood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To Paros<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 20 they arrived in Paros, sold the firewood and lime and bought more than 600 clay pots and all the octopuses they could find, and on the way back they stopped at Nios and bought all the octopuses that were available. They returned to Symi on July 2, sold around 200 pots, several octopuses and on July 12 they set sail for Palestine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To Haifa<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 23, they arrived in Haifa, sold the remaining 410 pots and the octopuses. From Haifa, they went to neighboring Acre and bought 12 tons of watermelons, pigeon peas, lentils, broad beans, corn, melati and several bales of straw. At the end of July, they set off on their return journey, stopping briefly in Beirut where they bought a safety deposit box. On August 2, they arrived in Kastelorizo, where they sold several watermelons, and continue to Rhodes, where they sold the straw and melati. They arrived in Symi on August 12 with the remaining goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Situations change<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once WWII began, food imports from the United States, Argentina and Australia stopped, and from Romania, Turkey, Hungary and Bulgaria were restricted. The Italians, having no other choice, implemented Speza (rationed food distribution) in the Dodecanese. But, because they needed large funds, they assigned Speza to the wealthiest merchants of each island, to save capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goods were imported to Rhodes, from where the merchants undertook their transport and distribution to each island. The Financial Police allowed some legitimate profit to the merchants, calculating the costs of purchase and transport. But every time they went to Rhodes to buy again, prices had increased and gradually their funds lost their value. When the war began, the gold pound was equivalent to about 100 lire and when the war ended it reached 1000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the economic hardship suffered by the Greeks, the economic devastation and the holocaust suffered by the Jews was even worse. Even Italian businesses lost a large part of their value due to the economic hardship that followed. Later, after the Incorporation of the Dodecanese, the Dodecanese economic development began to recover, at first gradually and then rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
