Also, among the hundreds of chapels and monasteries that exist in Karpathos, several dozen are dedicated to the Virgin Mary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of these chapels, Kyra Panagia, celebrated during the Novena of the Virgin Mary (August 23), is in \u200b\u200bMyli in the plain of ancient Poseidion. Since ancient times, this area was considered sacred, with the ancient tombs of Myli located nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the same place where the current chapel is located, within Kastanenas\u2019 estate, there was a ruined chapel, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Around 1911, Kyrania Gergatsouli, from Aperi, rebuilt the chapel, which functioned the same year in her Grace. There, next to the chapel was a cemetery, as in other parts of Pigadia, before the current cemetery in Saint Nicholas was built. Fifteen years after the construction of the church, the terrible earthquake of 1926 occurred, the dome and two walls fell, and the sanctuary opened a little and the chapel remained in ruins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/a317-KyraPanagia4-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/a317-KyraPanagia4-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-77799\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a4\u03bf \u03b5\u03c3\u03c9\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03cd, \u03c0\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03ae. The interior of the monastery, before the destruction (photo Patricia Fenn 2007).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After nine years, Kyrania George Logothetis took the initiative and wrote to her husband in Abyssinia, who organized a fundraiser among the Karpathians there that yielded 25 British gold pounds. Kyrania continued her efforts in Karpathos and formed a committee with Maria Nikita Lyristaki, Eudoxia Aristidi Nikolaidi and Eudoxia Vasiliou Trembella. The committee organized a fundraiser that yielded a respectable amount of money. The contractor for the repair of the church was Polychronis Halkias, and the iconostasis was built by Vangelis Zervoudakis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the inauguration, Metropolitan Germanos came down from Aperi and celebrated the divine service. In the past, the pilgrims were Aperitans who had properties and stables nearby and some Pigadiotans who came from Aperi. Over time, more Pigadiotans came and the Aperitans became fewer because they preferred the Virgin Mary in Mertona and Vlya, which were celebrated on the same day. In the first years before and after the war, almost all Pigadiotans went to the feast of the Virgin Mary, where a service was held and \u201cartoklasia\u201d. The women who had stables and fruit yards in the area brought and treated the attendants with figs, grapes and other seasonal fruits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Era<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, the church and the festival have begun to be upgraded. Kyrania, the last owner, gave the chapel to Vagelistra and the family of George and Marigoula (Kyrania\u2019s daughter) Protopapa built a new iconostasis, crafted by the woodcarver John Rousakis, and replaced the icons. Marika Andrea Lambrou built a new wood-carved door, Irini John Logothetis gave part of her property to widen the road and provide parking for the church, and the ecclesiastical committee, built toilets and a warehouse for the needs of the monastery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, the festival evolved, and in addition to figs and grapes, each housewife brings sweets and appetizers, and in recent years, for a while, were served braised pork, pilaf and salad. Since 2006, the festival has been held again with appetizers, sweets, fruits and refreshments brought by the pilgrims. It is often followed by a traditional Karpathian feast with lyres, lutes and mantinades that recall years gone by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 3, apparently due to negligence, the chapel caught fire, causing great destruction, and the Metropolis and the church of Vangelistra were immediately mobilized to repair the damage. In this effort, as has been established, the Karpathians abroad are also expected to contribute. In over a century of life and activity, the Karpathian societies in America have allocated millions of dollars, mainly for the construction of churches and schools.
