The subtropical high-pressure zone, which blocks the winds blowing from the Atlantic and brings moisture and causes rainfall, in the winter resides in North Africa and now that summer has arrived it moved to Mediterranean and Southern Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A century ago, Karpathos, the most forested island in the Aegean, 50% of its area was covered by pine forests and low-growing forests. Oral tradition states that the pine forest in Agrelli of Olympos was so dense that not even a snake could pass through. The forests have burned down and most of the springs, for which Karpathos was famous, have dried up and the ones that remain have diminished in flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Italians, who during the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese caused so much suffering to the inhabitants of the islands, took care of the protection of the forests. At intervals, they cut down the trees that grew in the streams and in case a fire caught in one part of the forest, the fire did not spread to the next. They also allowed the woodcutters to cut down the bushes that grew between the pine trees to give the opportunity in case of fire to progress more quickly and not to burn the pine trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To protect the forests, the Italians built two forest guards\u2019 quarters. One was in eastern Karpathos, in Ly in the Mertona area, and the other in western Karpathos, in Messathes in the Mesochori area. When a forest caught fire, all the men of the neighboring villages, from 18 to 60 years old, were recruited to put it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pine forest in Mertona started from the sea and reached the top of Lastos. The vegetation was so dense that you could hardly pass through the trees and bushes. In the forest, on a plateau, the Italians built a spacious stone forest guardhouse crafted with excessive art, its roof was made of French-style tiles. Through a double door you entered the forest guardhouse flooded with light, as there were large windows on the front and side walls.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/a320-Forests2-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/a320-Forests2-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-78417\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u03a3\u03b5 \u03ad\u03bd\u03b1 \u03c0\u03bb\u03ac\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1 \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf \u039b\u03c5 \u03b2\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03ba\u03cc\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd \u03c4\u03bf \u03c0\u03c5\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03ba\u03b9\u03bf. The fire station was located on a plateau in Ly (Photo-Vasilis Mikropantremenos, 2006).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In the middle was a large table with four benches and at the back was a large stone fireplace for the fireguards to cook and warm themselves in the winter. From the central door, passing through three or four steps, you went down to a cobblestone courtyard fenced with pine trunks that were used for seating by visitors and passersby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few meters further, through a rock, a crystal spring gushed. The cold water fell from a spout into a small carved stone cistern that many years ago some human hand had crafted for passersby, birds, and forest animals to drink from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the cistern overflowed, the water would spill into a stream and a hundred meters below will create a pool and water some reeds. What\u2019s left of the forests of Karpathos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The second forest guards\u2019 quarter was in the forest at Messathes among towering pine trees that started from the sea and reached as far as Lastos. The forest guards\u2019 quarter was located next to the path that went from Pyles to Mesochori. You climbed two or three steps and entered a spacious wooden one-story building crafted with excessive art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Integration of the Dodecanese with Greece, the forestry office was installed in the converted Italian refrigerator in Ryaki in Pigadia. The forest guards\u2019 quarters were abandoned and from the one in Mertona some people took the doors and windows and whatever else they found useful. After a few years the roof collapsed and in 2006, when I visited it, I found it in ruins. When in 1948 we passed through Messathes with the boys\u2019 cout group we found the forest guards\u2019 quarter abandoned but in good condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Dodecanese were liberated 35% of Rhodes was covered by forests, but the forests of Rhodes also suffered the same fate as those of Karpathos. The problem of forest destruction by fires concerns not only the Dodecanese, but it is also Panhellenic and global problem. When Greece was liberated and the first Greek state was created in 1930, 50% of the Peloponnese and Central Greece were covered by forests.
