Like every year, these days, Karpathos is preparing to celebrate the 81st<\/sup> anniversary of October 5, 1944, with the presence of the President of the Republic and other personalities. On the same days, those who lived through the events at that time and are still alive, reminisce and relive unforgettable and historic moments. The Germans leave, the Karpathians rise, the Italians bow their heads, the English come. The people of Pigadia return to their homes, but they find others destroyed, looted and neglected in a bad state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in a few days, the Greek schools will open in Pigadia with the principal and teacher Vassos Minas Economides and teachers Fotini Pitta and Maria Makri, who are trying to fill the gaps left by the closure of the Greek schools by the Italians, and to instill patriotism in the souls of the students. They succeed!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the eve, our teacher Fotini Pitta informs us that the next day the first anniversary of October 5, 1944, would be celebrated in Menetes and one of the speakers was the principal of our school. Vasos Economides, son of the teacher Minas Economides, was known for his patriotic action during the Italian occupation and was a member of the Revolutionary Committee of Menetes. His brother Sophocles was the one who, together with Lazaros Kosmas, carried the message of the uprising from Menetes to the other villages, and was one of the seven who, with the \u201cImmacolata\u201d, notified the Allies in Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day, none of us were in the mood for class. Our teacher, Fotini Pitta, spoke to us briefly about the historic anniversary and in 15 minutes she put us in line, she herself got in front and all my classmates, most of whom were ten-year-olds, took the road to Menetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we arrived at Menetes after two hours, the Divine Liturgy was about to end so that the doxology could begin. Among the dignitaries were Captain Pike and other English officials. We listened in silence to the speeches, especially those of our teacher, which still rings in my ears to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 30 years have passed since the Karpathian Federation decided to publish its first commemorative album. I contacted my unforgettable teacher, he sent me his speech, and it was published in the \u201cKarpathian Heritage\u201d, which was awarded by the Academy of Athens. The manuscript of his speech, along with my entire archive, is in the \u201cArchive of Hellenes Abroad\u201d at Queens College, New York City University, which was established with funding from the Niarchos Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
