We used to gather there every morning this summer. Young then, between eighteen and twenty and, set the tone of life in Pigadia, especially in the summers: competitive socker, noisy, with the little ones ecstatically watching their role models and rushing to grow up to be like them. Swimming, excursions, entertainment, lots of romance and heartbreak for some beauties. Celebrations alongside those of the adults, without devaluing tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young people, full of joy and optimism, whose dreams and ambitions took them far from Karpathos: America, Australia, Canada, Athens. Some for studies and others for a professional career. Others, again, chased their dreams at sea. To plow, instead of their father\u2019s field, the oceans of the earth. To see and learn. Greeks!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the years passed quickly and everyone \u2013 almost \u2013 returned to the land that gave them birth, including the sailors. And now, these last ones are the ones who add color and flavor to the company with their exciting stories. \u201cThe captains\u201d \u2013 that\u2019s how we address them \u2013 have a lot to say, because they\u2019ve seen a lot, and they know\u2026 even more. Here, however, there is a hierarchy: for \u201csea\u201d matters, everyone\u2019s gaze turns to the oldest captain first. The experts as people say. Beyond them (as is the case with us Greeks) there will always be someone who happens to know everything! An expert on everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last case is particularly interesting, because this type of expert passionately defends what he claims. And if there is only one, fine! There is a chance that there are two or three at the same time, in which case each of them, trying to monopolize the interest of the listeners, enlists non-existent rhetorical abilities, puts forward improbable arguments, and this is precisely where the funny lies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, because we Greeks have the gift of oratory, it sometimes happens that in a group, two or three people take the floor at the same time and orate intensely and non-stop. They stayed here and lived off its sea. Good kids. Honest, simple, authentic people. They follow our conversations with interest, participate in them and seem to enjoy not only the lightheartedness, but also whatever interesting, wise and beneficial things are said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Various conversations. With the politics not missing either, so that the tones rise and fall with chivalrous courtesy when Mrs. Kaiti appears to serve the coffee. She is willing and polite, she withdraws immediately after serving discreetly, accompanied by thanks and praise: \u201cCongratulations Mrs. Kaiti. Your coffee is the best in Karpathos.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A mental euphoria, which, however, is not due to the coffee, no matter how good it is. It is the reunion of people who shared their youth and are now searching for that image of themselves, each in the other\u2019s memories. In the coffee shop, a re-baptism takes place in the golden pool of youth. The white hair and wrinkles disappear, as if by magic. Everyone is a teenager again! And the conversations (most of the time) are youthful, of that era. The same vocabulary, the same tone of voice, the laughter flowing, youthful: the miracle of the village coffee shop and the small provincial town. Here, everyone is recognizable and important. He is not exhausted by the anonymity of the big city coffee shop, where he remains tragically unknown. His white hair does not become a cause for contempt. It is the crowning glory of a long and honored life.
