In the jungle of Panama<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the Incorporation of the Dodecanese into Greece, the communication between our islands and Piraeus was restored and newspapers and magazines began to arrive. Among them was the monthly magazine PAMEN, which published fictional stories related to the jungle, and was popular among young people. That is where I got my first knowledge of the jungle, but it was a decade later when I got to know the real jungle, while I was serving with the American army in the Panama Canal Zone, which was under American rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most famous jungles were those of Congo, Brazil, Indochina, and Indonesia, and no one would expect them to have anything to do with Panama, a narrow strip of land in Central America. However, in the eastern part of this strip on the Panama-Colombia border, in the Darien region, lies the densest jungle in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n

Jungle Training Center<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why the Americans created the Jungle Operations Training Center military school at Fort Sherman in the Panama Canal Zone, where American soldiers were trained in the art of war in a tropical environment. Every three weeks, around 200 soldiers came for training. I served in this school for six months. In addition to the military, the training also included ways of surviving in the inhospitable environment of the jungle, without any help. Those who were destined to become astronauts were also subjected to this training. If, by some mistake, the rocket carrying them fell into the jungle, they had to know how they could survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To survive in the jungle, you need to know the flora and fauna. Impressively large trees do not let the sun\u2019s rays pass through the foliage of their canopy, from which thick climbing plants up to 20 meters long hung. Among the towering trees there were other smaller ones, and under them grew dense bushes, which to open a passage to pass through, you had to cut them with a machete (steel knives whose blades weighed up to two kilograms and you had to move them up and down with force, cutting the bushes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plant vegetation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a journey through the jungle, I came across the remains of the base of a tree trunk and estimated that its diameter at the base would have reached 20 meters. Of particular interest was the lignun vitae or guayacan (ironwood), with gravity of 1.26, which sinks in water. No matter how thick a nail you use, as soon as it penetrates the bark of the tree, the nail bends. You can only open a hole with a drill.<\/p>\n\n\n

Of particular interest was a type of plant that closed its leaves as soon as you touched it. There was also another flowering plant that closed its flower as soon as an insect entered it. There was an opinion that it was a carnivorous plant!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to the tropical rains and the topography of the land, there were several small waterfalls, swamps and rivers. The rivers were deep but narrow, around 10-15 meters wide, except for the Chagres River, which is 100 meters wide. You had to be especially careful when passing near or through the swamps, the grass (elephant grass) was over two meters high and suddenly you could fall into quicksand and the mud would reach your neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

River\u2019s crossing<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For soldiers to cross from one bank to the other of the narrowest rivers, a soldier would swim and carry the ends of two ropes to the opposite bank. To the trunks of two trees that were opposite each other near the two banks of the river, they would tie one rope (stretched) one meter above the ground, and two meters higher they would tie the second rope. You would hold the second rope with your hands, step on the first and, walking sideways, cross to the opposite bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To cross a large river, like the Chagres, you used your military raincoat (poncho). You spread it on the ground, tied the hood with string to keep the water out, and formed a square plastic blanket. You filled it with small branches and leaves, between which you placed your weapon, your clothes, and other supplies. You passed a strong string through the circular metal holes in the poncho that were around its circumference, until it closed and formed a raft that you threw into the river and, swimming, slowly pushed it until you reached the opposite bank.<\/p>\n\n\n

Due to the dense vegetation, you needed a compass to navigate the jungle, since even during the day it was easy to get disoriented and lost. When you get lost, you descended until you reached the bank of a river and followed its flow until you got to its mouth or until you came across a bridge over which a road passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the help of a rope, you descend steep cliffs. At the top of the cliff, to the trunk of a tree, you tied one end of the rope. You passed the rest of the rope through your legs, turned it behind your back in front of your chest, holding it with your right hand. With your left hand, you hold the descending rope to balance yourself. Little by little, you loosened the rope that you hold with your right hand and slowly descended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Animals<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the jungle of Panama, you do not encounter oversized herbivores and, consequently, carnivores. There are a variety of snakes, such as the boa which can reach five meters. To capture a boa, you use a one-and-a-half-meter piece of wood, from the trunk of a straight, thin tree, which ends in a V-shaped fork, which you cut at five centimeters of the meter. You approach the boa from behind and try to immobilize it by putting and pressing its neck into the fork. The boa does not bite, but it tries to strangle its victims. You hold it by the neck, and as soon as you squeeze it a little, it paralyzes.<\/p>\n\n\n

Coral snake<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were also poisonous snakes, the most dangerous being the coral snake, about forty centimeters long, whose poison attacks the nervous system, and the victim dies in seconds. However, there was a great demand for medical reasons, its price reached three hundred dollars, when ten dollars bought a gold pound. You could catch it with your hand, but you had to be careful. The coral snake has a small mouth and can only bite you on the edge of your nose or on the membrane between the fingers of your hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The iguana is a one-meter-long lizard, half of which is taken up by its tail, and you should avoid approaching it from the sides. With a sudden movement of its tail, it can even break your shin. In the jungle, there are many species of monkeys, which live in the branches of trees and rarely come down to the ground. The body of the largest reaches half a meter and their tail is even longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are many fish in the rivers. The largest are found in the Chagres River. In the sea, around Panama, many species of fish abound. In the language of the natives, Panama means the sea of fish. Turtles live in the marshy and shallow waters, and during the dry season (January-March), many crabs that build their nests in the soil come out and move around on the surface. Of particular interest were the glowworms, whose light is so strong that you think it comes from a small flashlight. The largest carnivorous animal is the wildcat, which reaches one meter in length and avoids people.<\/p>\n\n\n

The useless mosquito<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most dangerous animal for humans is the anopheles mosquito, which if you are bitten and you are not vaccinated, you die of malaria (tropical fever). The French, who were the first to undertake the opening of the Panama Canal, failed because the workers were dying of malaria. On the contrary, the Americans, before starting the opening of the canal, took care to eliminate the causes that caused it. Under the direction of William Crawford Gorgas (Chief Sanitary Officer to the Isthmian Commission), they took care of draining the swamps where the anopheles mosquito lived and finding a vaccine against malaria. Later, the Gorgas hospital was founded in the Panama Canal Zone, which pioneered the fight against tropical diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residence<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To survive in the jungle, even for a few days, you need to build a hut to protect yourself from rainwater, humidity, snakes, and other reptiles that roam the land and to keep your body dry and clean. The hut is made of thin tree trunks or branches 5-15 centimeters in diameter, depending on their use. The floor is horizontal and is one meter off the ground, and the roof is inclined two to three meters higher. For a roof, you spread banana and palm tree leaves on thin tree trunks. For a mattress, you place bushes, and tree leaves on the raised floor. The space under the floor is used for kitchen and storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diet<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding food is the biggest problem you face in the jungle. Despite the tropical vegetation, plant foods are scarce. Coconut palm trees are abundant, whose fruit (coconut) is rich in vegetable fat and when cut before it ripens, the liquid it contains is an excellent refreshment. In areas where people once lived, you find banana and mango trees and, in the jungle, there are roots of certain plants that you can eat. There is a greater variety of animal foods, such as snakes (mainly boas), iguanas, monkeys, and turtles.
